Butterfly Kisses

February 21, 2018

Hello – Samantha back sharing a card I created using Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Butterfly Aperture die by Becky Seddon. This is one of those card making moments where the idea in your head seems fun and easy but the actual process is long and tedious. Many times I thought of changing the idea, simplifying it, but I persisted and well…you tell me, worth it?

I think so… 🙂

Card Instructions:

Step 1: Die-cut a panel for the card front using the largest rectangle from the Dashing Rectangles die set and the Butterfly Aperture on White Soft Finish Cardstock, then adhere this to a light gray side-fold card base slightly larger then the white rectangle.

Step 2:  Trace (in pencil) the outline of the butterfly die on a scrap piece of White Soft Finish Cardstock.

Step 3: Using the traced butterfly outline as a guide – blend ink colours onto your card.

To replicate the card as shown, use Distress Oxide inks (Candied Apple, Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet, Salty Ocean, Twisted Citron, and Fossilized Amber) to create a rainbow blended palette or pick any colour scheme, provided that the colours blend/mix well together. (Example: Monochrome)

Step 4: Continue blending and applying ink within the outline of the traced butterfly.

Step 5: Apply ink until all white space within the traced area is covered. Allow to dry.

TIP: It doesn’t need to look pretty and the wings don’t have to be a perfect match – the detail in the butterfly die will hide areas that are not smoothly blended.

Step 6: Die-cut the butterfly making sure not to lose any of the tiny negative die-cut pieces.

***VERY IMPORTANT – Do not lose any pieces!***

(Here comes the fun part!)

Step 7: Using foam tape adhere all the negative butterfly wing die pieces back to their position.

Step 8: Continue adhering as many of the larger pieces as possible.

Step 9: Using a glue pen adhere the smaller pieces directly into the negative space.

The pieces were adhered this way as some of the smaller pieces were too small to add 3D foam to the back – ideally, it would be preferable to have had the butterfly all the same but I was rather happy with the end result.)

Step 10: Stamp the sentiment on light gray cardstock. Die cut with a die from the Dashing Circles die set, making sure that the sentiment is positioned close to the bottom of the circle.

Step 11: Assemble card. Adhere sentiment circle to bottom left; trim off excess. Embellish with sequins and an optional line of machine stitching at the left per the photo below. (Tip: Keep adhesive away from the part of the circle where stitching will be positioned so the sewing machine needle will not get sticky.)

Step 12:  Add glitter to the wings: Mix Multi Medium Matte or a clear-drying liquid glue with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter and apply with a cotton swab. Allow to dry.

Step 13: Accent the left side of the card with neutral color twine tied in a bow just above the sentiment.

The photo really doesn’t do justice to the Silk Microfine Glitter – it really does sparkle like a diamond!

So as not to waste the ‘positive’ die left over from the die-cutting process above, use the butterfly to create a second card (which, by the way, was A LOT  easier to put together then the first). I do personally like the first card more – maybe because it was made with love and time, and I do adore the dimension (and the glitter!).

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and get a chance to try it at home.

Samantha

Wow! Amazingly beautiful both ways. You really had a long process to finish it off but it sure looks wonderful. I know I would have abandoned it so I applaud you for keeping with it. Whoever gets this better appreciate all the hard work involved.

Gorgeous is an understatement, but if I tried this it would take a month or more and a couple bottles of Advil. I did enjoy your presentation and I love the card.

Love this technique! Butterflies are my favorite thing to put on cards. When I was at a sale, people were looking for cards with butterflies.

This is beyond beautiful, but if I tried it I would be working on it for a month or more and need a large bottle of Advil to quell my headache. LOL
