Together Forever

Hi! It’s Suzanne here today with a simple layered card. This would be wonderful for a wedding, engagement or anniversary!

A little detour before getting into the project: Did you know that all of the A Way With Words die designs originate as my own hand lettering in pen and ink? I work at a drafting table, revising many times till I’m satisfied. I usually letter in the super elegant ‘Italic hand’ where hairlines are treasured. Note that this isn’t a ‘font’ and no computers are involved in this first part of how the dies are born. The beauty of Italic comes from the twisted ribbon look and its delicate details show best on a plain background with high contrast.

This layered card was simple to make! The hardest part (and yet, the most fun!) was choosing colours for each layer and deciding on their order. I chose white for the words as it creates a high contrast for the underlying panel.  The smallest panel shows a tiny bit of pink that is then carried from a dragonfly through to the mat below.  The blues contrast in pattern, not so much in colour, creating a lot of visual interest. Who can resist polka dots and chevrons?

I chose patterned paper that I’d call shabby but elegant. You could easily go for a more formal look with cream paired with metallic gold. Ooooo!!!

Another little detour and a tip: I love patterned paper. It usually comes in collections where all the colours and designs coordinate. That works for me!  I look for collections that have a full range of colour values from light to dark, heavily patterned as well as simpler. And because I know how I like to work, I usually purchase more of the very lightest and very darkest papers, open stock, if they’re available that way. I highly recommend getting the extra sheets you know you’ll need at some point. (Paper collections ‘retire’ and then they won’t be available.)

Here is how you can make this card!

Instructions:

  1. Form a side-fold card base measuring 4.5 x 7.5”. Cut a small rectangular panel measuring 3 x 5.5”. Cut two more coordinating panels to mat the small panel, approximately 1/8” larger on all sides than the previous panel.
  2. Die cut Together and Forever from white cardstock. (Have you tried mixing and matching the A Way With Words dies? It’s a lot of fun!) Die cut dragonflies from patterned cardstock that has a small scale, muted or tone-on-tone pattern.
  3. Adhere the elements as shown by cutting tiny pieces of Clear Double Sided Adhesive to place behind the widest parts of the letters. Adhere only the bodies of the dragonflies, not the wings. Bend the wings upward so the dragonflies can fly off. Together. Forever.

Huzzah! I found some Maja papers, in the hues you used (and a few more). I am paper-addicted, and I just looove the colors and textures you’ve combined. A great father’s day card idea, with just a few word changes. Awesome card 😉

I can envision it in cream and gold or bright yellow words with equally bright solid or patterned backgtounds – such a versatile idea, Suzanne.
