Cardmaking Inspiration from the Design Team Joset Designs

Fall Harvest Friends

Hi Friends, it’s EK. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for Fall. I am ready for the leaves to drop and the weather to turn into something that needs a sweater and maybe a scarf. At least for me, those days are still pretty far off, but I figured I could at least craft myself into the season. Today I have created a trio of Fall Harvest themed cards using Joset’s critter dies to craft these fall feeling designs.

Step One: Create the backgrounds. Die cut a circle mask using the Stitched Circles die set. Lay on your background to be a harvest moon. In a splatter box, spray a collection of fall inspired colors Distress Sprays onto some already damp Watercolor Paper. I used Tattered Rose, Victorian Velvet and Shaded Lilac.

Step Two: Spray Distress Oxide along the top edge of the background. I used Chipped Sapphire Distress Oxide. Remove the mask and head seat the background.

Step Three: Spray clean water into the ‘moon’ and let ink run into the white space. Dry. Press ink int any left over ink for a smooched look. Heat set.

Step Four: Repeat steps one through three with a different background color. Here I used Antique Linen, Mowed Lawn, and Forest Moss Distress Stain Spray and Bundled Sage Distress Oxide Spray.

Step Five: Repeat steps one through three for a third time using different colors. Here I sed Antique Linen, Wild Honey and Rusty Hinge Distress Stain Spray and Carved Pumpkin Distress Oxide Spray.

Step Six: Splatter each background with reflective shimmer ink. I used Perfect Pearls in both original and pewter.

Step Seven: Die cut the backgrounds with the Stitched Indented Rectangle die set.

Step Eight: Create Harvest trees. Using the Tree die set, die cut three trees out of cardstock. I used black, grey and blue cardstock for my trees.

Step Nine: Emboss each die cut three with a subtle color so the trees each have shine.

I used on the on the grey cardstock Distress Embossing Glaze in Rusty Hinge, on the blue cardstock Distress Embossing Glaze in Tattered Rose, and on the black cardstock on old pot of glitter vintage mahogany embossing powder.

Step Ten: Create the critters. Start by die cutting the critter out of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock. Here I used the Fox die set.

Step Eleven: Using Distress Ink, color the die cut pieces.

Step Twelve: Using a liquid adhesive, such as Kids Choice Glue, assembled the critter. I used the holiday hat trim from the die set to create a scarf for the Fox to wear.

Step Thirteen: Repeat steps ten through twelve with the Moose dies set.

Step Fourteen: Repeat steps ten through twelve with the Owl die set. I also used the holiday hat die in the set to create a scarf for this critter.

Step Fifteen: Adhere the background onto an A2 card frame using 10mm Clear Double Sided Tape. Adhere the tree to the background. Add a critter to the card. I used the blue background, the tattered rose embossed Tree and the blue toned Owl to the first card.

The green background got the glitter Tree and the Moose die set.

The orange background got the rusty hinge Tree and the Fox.

Step Sixteen: Using the Zen Sentiments stamp set, add a sentiment to each of the cards.

LoVe This Owl

Karen here today. The Owl Die from Elizabeth Craft Designs is just too cute! He makes a great and fast Valentine’s Day card when paired with the Peek-A-Boo Love Dies!

To create this card:

  1. Cut a vertical card base from 90 lb White Soft Finish Card stock at 4-1/4″ x 11″ and fold in half.
  2. Cut a piece of the Worn Wood Paper at 4″x5-1/4″ for the card front.
  3. Die cut the Owl Die pieces from 90 lb White Soft Finish Cardstock. To make assembly easier, cut the tummy, nose, eye pieces and feet with 101mm Double Sided Adhesive on the back.
  4. Color the wings and tummy with Distress Oxide in Stormy Sky, the body, face and ears with Distress Ink in Tea Dye, and the outer part of the eye in Distress Ink in Antique Linen. Color the second layer of eyes with a light blue Copic maker and the inner part with Copic dark grey. The feet and nose are colored with Copic Orange.
  5. Cut the Love die from the Peek-a-Boo Love dies from Brown Cardstock and adhere to the card front.
  6. Die cut the “center” of the love die from the Mystical Winter Collection.
  7. Add the owl and a few diamond dots to the front of the card.

Winter Solstice

Hello crafters!

It’s Susan Tierney-Cockburn here today. As summer ends, and with the cold weather slowly approaching, I am suddenly inspired by winter memories.  It is with great excitement that I will show you how to make my “Winter Solstice” card.

When I designed CountryScapes, I had decided that these dies would reflect my story. Growing up in our home on three acres of my grandparents’ farm, after my father retired from the military, was an adventure every day and every season. Looking out onto our backyard, was the split rail fence, and in winter, it was adorn with snow. I noticed the wildlife that passed through our yard, but mostly the serenity it brought by just staring out my bedroom window while I read or sketched. This card is my memory of those times.

1.Cut A6 card (6 1/4” x 4 1/2”) from 100lb Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Soft Finish Cardstock and a rectangle (6” x 4 1/4”-top layer) from 85lb Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Soft Finish Cardstock. Die cut all pieces twice, except the snow mound, of which you will need three if you’re going to add it in front of the tree, with Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Clear Double-sided Adhesive on the back. Everything is cut from the Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Soft Finish Cardstock, except the Country Fence. I die cut one Country Fence from the Soft Finish Cardstock and one from 100lb dark brown cardstock. Create a cloud and grass template from heavy cardstock.

2. First, adhere a 2” x 4 1/4” piece of Clear Double-side Adhesive sheet to the bottom of the top layer; don’t peel it until you’ve done the clouds. I use Ultramarine Blue Shade from Susan’s Garden PanPastels Set 2 for the stormy sky. After the sky is done, it’s safe to peel off the protective sheet of the adhesive and sprinkle with the Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Silk Microfine Glitter (apply as directed). Adhere this top sheet to your card. Edge card with the Silver Peels Offs if desired.

3. I used PanPastels Set 2 Chrom. Oxide Green Tint and a cosmetic applicator to lightly color the evergreens in the background. Next, I added details to the trees with the Prismacolor Cool Gray pen.

4. Adhere the trees, branches, Country Fence, and Owl pieces together. I like the look of adding thickness to my pieces, but it’s purely optional on your part. If you want snowflakes, you can use a toothpick, dipped into the Kid’s Choice glue and dot the sky, then, sprinkle with Twinklets/Diamond Dust.

5. Shade the trees, using PanPastels Set 3 Paynes Gray Tint overall and highlight the details with Paynes Gray. Adhere birch tree to the top layer. Repeat with the branches.

6. Adhere the Country Fence together, white cardstock on top. Use the Walnut Stain to color the fence, then, use PanPastels Set 3, Raw Umber to shade.

7. I apply Silk Microfine Glitter (Warm Diamond 640) to my cardstock as per instructions, then die cut it. Place two of the mounds onto the fence, the third one I cut to add some “mounding” in front of the birch tree. Cut the fence in half and use Kid’s Choice glue to adhere it to the right side of the birch tree. (Save the other half for another project!) I also added a mound of snow on top of the post.

8. Shade the owl, using PanPastels Set 3 Paynes Grey Tint and Paynes Grey. Details were done with Copic YR12 for the eyes and claws, then I used a black UniBall Pen to do pupils, beak, accentuate the feathers and claws. Adhere to the right side branch.

This really is a very quick card to make and put me in a serene mood, just remembering a scene similar when I was growing up.

Fun Times with Fitted Frames

Thank you for inviting me back as today’s guest designer. I thought it would be fun to make some cards with the new Fitted Frames 2 Curvy Rectangles die. As you can see from the photo below, it is a one-piece die that in ONE pass through the die cutting machine produces six separate frames, one rectangle with a string of hearts cut from it (negative shapes) and a string of three hearts. In addition, there are many little circles and other small bits and pieces that can be saved and used.

Fitted Frames 2 Curvy Rectangles is one of four Fitted Frames from the Els van de Burgt Studio collection. Two are rectangles (the largest frame in these two fills an A2 card front). Two are squares (measuring 4.75” x 4.75” they are just right for 5” square card fronts).

I chose an offbeat country-influenced folk art color palette of olive green, chamois yellow, dark green and red, with some chamois and olive plaid paper to tie things together. I mixed in an owl (a black outline peel-off on white cardstock colored with markers), some words (Congratulations and Merry Christmas from Suzanne Cannon’s new collection, A Way With Words), and Els van de Burgt Studio’s Leaf & Berry Branches.

Customize your cards by changing the palette. Switch to a different greeting (Happy Birthday, Get Well Soon, Friends, With Sympathy or any of the others). Use more patterned paper layers or stay with solid colors. If you love sparkle incorporate glittered frames and gems. If you’re making exclusively holiday cards add die cut holly, pinecones or poinsettias; substitute a Christmas tree ornament or other seasonal peel-off(s) for the owl.

Instructions:

  1. Add transparent double-sided adhesive sheet to the back of a 4.25” x 5.5” piece of chamois yellow cardstock and to pieces of white cardstock (sized for the words you’ve selected and the Leaf & Berry Branches (if you are making the projects precisely as shown). Use Fitted Frames 2 Curvy Rectangles to cut all frames and small heart-string pieces in one pass through the die cutting machine. Cut words and Leaf & Berry Branches with additional passes through the machine.
  1. Cut solid color cardstock and plaid paper rectangles* to fill or border the frame shapes. Refer to all project photos for ideas.

(*Tip: Cut and label scrap cardstock pieces to use as cutting patterns for these rectangles. Keep them for future card projects so you don’t have to measure again next time!)

  1. Assemble the cards on ivory A2 card bases, folded at the top for the horizontal word cards and at the side (vertical) for the cards with hearts. (Mix in solid color and plaid paper rectangles from Step 2.)
  1. Place a black owl peel-off onto white cardstock. Color with markers and then add doodles with black and white pens. Cut around the owl leaving a narrow white border except just below the feet! (This detail helps the owl look like he’s “perched” instead of “floating”)
  1. Using foam dots for dimension, add the owl to the vertical card that has the large size frame, a smaller inner frame, and string of hearts. Also add one of the branches.
  1. Add a branch to horizontal Congratulations card.
  1. Accent the berries with tiny Red Glitter Dots Peel-offs. Optional: Also add a single tiny Red Glitter Dot to the hearts as shown on the red hearts in the yellow rectangle. There are four different size Dots on each sheet – I used the smallest size for these projects.

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here today. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love owls which is why my blog is called StampOwl’s Studio. So, of course, I was super excited when I discovered that one of the dies being released by Elizabeth Craft Designs at the end of this month was going to be an Owl die!! When mine arrived it was the first thing I had to play with. I decided to create a Stand Up card this time around and instead of die cutting the Brick die for the background, I have embossed it which makes this die even more versatile.

Here is how I created my card:

1. Cut a piece of pale pink cardstock 4-1/4″ x 11″. Score at 2-3/4″ and 5-1/2″. Fold along score lines as shown above. Lightly score at 8-1/4″ but do not fold.

2. Position the Grass Stand Up Helper die so that the bottom of the die is lined up along the 8-1/4″ score line created in step 1 and approx 5/8″ from the left side of the card. Die cut, remove the die from the card and now line it up again on the score line but this  time approximately 5/8″ from the right side of the card.

  • Place a piece of Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to green cardstock that will be large enough to fit the Grass Stand Up Helper die twice. Die cut so that the adhesive is on the bottom, trim along the bottom edge of the grass and adhere on top of the Grass on the pale pink card.
  • Cut a piece of pale pink cardstock 4-1/4″ x 2-5/8″ and adhere to the panel behind the Grass to hide the opening.

3. Cut a piece of cream cardstock 4″ x 2-1/2″ and a piece of pink designer paper 3-3/4″ x 2-1/4″. Ink around the edges of each piece using light brown ink. Layer the designer paper to the cream card. Adhere this to the panel in front of the Grass Stand Up Helper die cut.

  • Place a piece of Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to dark brown cardstock that will be large enough to fit the “Happy Birthday” die. Die cut and attach to the center of this panel.
  • Use a dark brown Copic marker to color seven large and six medium dots from the Transparent Glitter Dots Peel-Offs.  Use four of each size to decorate the corners as per sample above. Set aside the others for later.

4. For Main Panel

  • a. Cut a piece of cream cardstock 4″ x 5-1/4″ and ink around edges using light brown ink.

  • b. Cut a piece of burgundy cardstock 3-3/4″ x 5″. Center the Brick die on top of the card and emboss. (Tip: To emboss the die rather than die cutting it, you will need to place the cardstock onto a silicone embossing mat and then the die-cut-side down onto the card, which is then sandwiched between the cutting plates. If you are using a Big Shot, you will be using tab 1. For other die cutting machines refer to your machine’s embossing instructions.)
  • c. Use a sanding block to sand over the embossed bricks and the edges of the burgundy card.
  • d. Layer the burgundy card to the cream card.
  • e. Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of the bottom half of this panel, ensuring the adhesive does not extend past 2-1/2″ from the bottom. Attach panel to the folded stand up card we created in step 1 so that there is an even border around the two sides and bottom.

5. Using the Owl Die die, cut the following:

  • (2) branches – one from dark brown cardstock and one from green cardstock. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of the dark brown card before die cutting branch.) Remove leaves from brown branch and adhere over the green branch.
  • (1) Solid Owl – from brown cardstock.
  • (3) Outline Owls – one from brown cardstock, one from cocoa brown cardstock and one from pink designer paper. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Remove the outline only from the dark brown owl and attach this to the solid owl. Before attaching the pieces from the remaining owls use a black marker to color the eyeballs black. Refer to the photo above for placement of attaching the pieces from the cocoa brown owl and the pink designer paper owl.
  • (1) Set eyes – from white cardstock. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to owl as per photo.
  • (1) Beak & Feet set – from yellow cardstock. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to owl as per photo.
  • Attach owl to card using foam tape.

6. Die cut Speech Bubble from the Accordion Rectangle die set from cream cardstock. Ink around edges using light brown ink.

  • Using the Alphabet 1 – Caps die, die cut the letters “HOOT” from dark brown cardstock (which has been backed with Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive). Attach letters to Speech Bubble.
  • Use foam tape to attach Speech Bubble to card.

7. Attach the remaining colored Glitter Dots that we set aside in step 3 to the burgundy panel as per photo.
