Holiday Mixed Media Canvas

August 17, 2018

Hey Friends!  It’s EK, and I’m sneaking in today to share a little mixed media canvas I created for the upcoming holiday season.  Last year during the holiday season, I started putting up small holiday theme canvases throughout the house.  It was a really fun way to decorate for Christmas instead of just putting up the tree.  With the new release of Joset’s new holiday dies, I wanted to create some new mini canvases, and thought the new Santa’s Sleigh was perfect for this project.

A Santa Die Cut Gift Tag

December 24, 2017

Hi Everyone!

It’s time for Sunday Stamping with Hedgehog Hollow again. I can’t believe it’s my last post of 2017.  First of all, Merry Christmas. I hope you are planning lots of fun times over the festive period, however you celebrate it.  I am of German heritage and I loved getting all my presents Christmas Eve. I let the girls open a small present Christmas Eve to keep the tradition alive, we have the rest of our presents Christmas Day – stockings when we first wake up and then we have Stollen Bread with Bucks Fizz and Prosecco, then a big round of presents before a big traditional British Christmas Day meal!  We have the in-laws over this year and I love them both so much. We will have lots of good food, laughter and fun while we celebrate our first Christmas in our own home. I’m so excited!

10-burlap-holiday-table-settings-with-mistletoe-by-annette-green-1Hello everyone, Annette Green here from the Susan’s Garden Club Design Team. I’m hosting a holiday brunch in December and thought it would be nice for my guests to have a special, handmade place setting to take home after the meal. I used the new Mistletoe die as a decorative element on my festive red burlap bags. Here’s how easy these were to make…

Christmas Ornament

December 11, 2014

ecd_ornament_Candy_Spiegel5

Hi! It’s Candy, back with an easy and inexpensive gift for a co-worker, family, friend or even yourself!

I love the ornament Peel-Offs from Elizabeth Craft Designs. There are lots of different designs and they are all fun to color. Round ones and other similar shapes are just perfect for making ornaments that can be hung on the tree, mantel, or a door knob! With a sturdy chipboard backing they’ll last for many years.

ecd_ornament_Candy_Spiegel1. Adhere a piece of Elizabeth Craft Designs Transparent Double Sided Tape to a piece of white cardstock large enough for one ornament and two holly leaves. Remove the release sheet and place it upside down in front of you. Place peel-offs sticky side up on your release sheet, then place white cardstock with adhesive side facing down on top. Turn over, remove release sheet and cover adhesive with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish and brush of excess glitter. Color with alcohol markers. Fussy cut out each piece.

ecd_ornament_Candy_Spiegel (2)

2. Cut a piece of chipboard slightly larger than the ornament. Adhere the ornament to the front and a piece of decorative paper to the back of the chipboard. Fussy cut the ornament out again.

3. Use a black Sharpie or any permanent black marker to color around the edge of the ornament so the sides of the ornament will be black to match the outlines in the peel-off.

ecd_ornament_Candy_Spiegel3

4. Punch a hole in the top of the ornament and tie a ribbon through it to create a loop for hanging.

5. Add Red Glitter Dots to the holly berries. Adhere the holly to the top of the ornament.

Handmade Holidays 2014 Hop Logo

A few years ago we were looking online for handmade gift ideas and thought it would be great if there was a resource dedicated JUST to handmade gift ideas. Enter the Handmade Holidays hop! We’ve gathered over 100 of our creative blogger friends in the craft industry as well as some of our fellow product manufacturers to bring you a plethora of inspiring gift ideas you can make now to give to your friends, family, and colleagues. Pin and bookmark these ideas for this holiday season and to use throughout the year! Each day of the hop features approximately 30 gift projects and you can “hop” from one blog to another to check them all out.

Shimmer Sheetz Patchwork Card Box

By Els van de Burgt

HH-Els Box-A

How about this combination for Handmade Holidays gift giving: Decks of vintage playing cards nestled in a handsome box with Shimmer Sheetz Patchwork on the top! The divided box would also make a nice present for someone who collects Artist Trading Cards, or with the addition of some adhesive backed Velvet Sheets on the interior, it’s just right for jewelry.

To make the box exactly as I did use bronze acrylic paint, Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz, three small allover pattern nature-theme embossing folders plus alcohol inks in pumpkin, light brown, and gold. Switch to a different palette and other embossing folders to suit the décor and taste of the person who will receive the box. (Shimmer Sheetz comes in a wide variety of colors, as do alcohol inks.)

HH-Els Box-C

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Basecoat the box with bronze acrylic paint. When dry, add a second coat of paint. Allow to dry.

2. Cut a 5” x 12” piece of Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz into three 4” x 5” pieces.

3. Emboss each of the pieces with a different embossing folder. As shown, all three folders have leafy patterns. Tip: Substitute any trio you want!

4. Alter the three embossed rectangles by lightly sanding and adding alcohol inks. One side of the pattern will have raised designs; the other side will have de-bossed designs. Alter some of each. Tip: Use a damp paper towel to wipe Shimmer Sheetz after sanding.

5. Cut each of the three 4” x 5” pieces into TWO 2” x 5” strips. Cut each 2” x 5” strip into FOUR pieces: TWO 2” x 1.5” pieces, TWO 2” x 1” pieces.

6. Trace the size of the lid of the box onto paper. Arrange pieces as shown or as you prefer, filling the space. Tip: Keep leftover pieces for other projects.

HH-Els Box-B

7. Cut a rectangular piece of Transparent Adhesive Sheet to cover the top (flat) portion of the lid of the box. Expose the adhesive and, working one piece at a time, move the Shimmer Sheetz patchwork pieces onto the adhesive.

Handmade Holidays Blog Hop Day 2 – Shimmer Sheetz Bangle Bracelets

November 8, 2014

Handmade Holidays 2014 Hop Logo

Welcome to the 4th Annual Handmade Holidays Blog Hop!

Judi Kauffman is back for day 2 of the Blog Hop. Today she created this beautiful set of bracelets decorated with Shimmer Sheetz.

Shimmer Sheetz Bangle Bracelets

By Judi Kauffman for Elizabeth Craft Designs

???????????????????????????????

It’s so easy to make bracelets for friends and family. The only things you need are flat-sided unpainted wooden bangles, Shimmer Sheetz, an embossing folder (or several!), paint and alcohol inks.

Bracelets can be simple like the ones shown below, or with further embellishment they can be over the top, like the one with beaded wire sprigs and a large half-pearl, shown above.

??????????????????????????????? INSTRUCTIONS

1. Paint the bangle with flat acrylic paint, followed by a coat of iridescent acrylic glaze, followed by a coat of clear acrylic sealer. Allow each coat to dry before adding the next.

2. Measure the exterior of the bracelet. Cut a piece of Shimmer Sheetz to fit around it. Cut the strip in half. Also cut two 1” strips to use as accent pieces. Using an ink applicator tool to apply colors, create a mottled effect on the Shimmer Sheetz with two or three alcohol inks, leaving some of the original color visible. Use the same colors on the two long strips, use different colors on the accent strips. (Sample bracelets: Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz). Cover the back of the Shimmer Sheetz pieces with double sided adhesive sheet.

3. Using the embossing folder shown or another pattern you prefer, emboss all of the pieces. Lightly sand to bring out some of the silver color in the core of the Shimmer Sheetz. Wipe with damp rag. Option: Add a bit more alcohol ink to further alter and highlight the embossed pattern.

???????????????????????????????

4. Remove the backing to expose the adhesive and wrap the two long Shimmer Sheetz strips around the bracelet. Cut 1” wide strips* from the extra pieces altered in step 2 to use as accents over the seams where the long strips join. (*Length of these pieces is determined by the width of the bracelet. Bracelets shown are 1” wide and 1.25” wide.)

???????????????????????????????

5. Optional embellishments: On one side of the bracelet at the point where the two long strips join drill small holes; attach bead and wire sprigs. Cover the holes with a 1” embellishment strip. Using jewelry glue to hold it in place, center a large half-pearl on the embellishment strip. (This bracelet may catch on knitted garments and chiffon fabrics and should be worn with care!)

6. For SUPER FAST BRACELETS, use one long strip of altered and embossed Shimmer Sheetz rather than two pieces and omit the short strip that would cover the single seam where the ends meet.

7. For maximum durability and to ensure that bracelets can stand up to constant use, omit the wired beads and pearl in step 5 and seal the bracelets with two or more coats of a clear acrylic coating. Dry between coats.

Handmade Holidays Blog Hop Day 1 – Two-Way Tissue Box

November 7, 2014

Handmade Holidays 2014 Hop Logo

Welcome to the 4th Annual Handmade Holidays Blog Hop!

We are exited to join this year’s Blog Hop! For the first day of the hop we invited our frequent guest Designer Judi Kauffman who created a beautiful decorated tissue box. See Judi’s instructions below.

Two-Way Tissue Box

By Judi Kauffman for Elizabeth Craft Designs

Box-1B

???????????????????????????????

My friend Els is decisive when it comes to comfortable shoes and schnitzel (no gravy!), but when it comes to décor in her studio it’s another matter. She likes to redecorate and reorganize the space on a regular basis. Hence, her present this Christmas is a Two-Way Tissue Box. She can position it with the two adjacent mixed media sides facing her guests and students, or with the two adjacent embossed sides taking center stage.

When making your own tissue box projects all four sides can match, all four can be different, or use my strategy with two pairs.

You’ll need just under two and a half 5” x 12” sheets of Shimmer Sheetz from a 3-sheet pack. Keep the leftovers for cards, jewelry, or other projects.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Base coat edges and interior of Walnut Hollow Boutique Tissue Box with royal purple acrylic paint. (No need to paint the rest, it will be covered.)

???????????????????????????????

2. Using an ink applicator tool to create a mottled effect, alter three 5” x 12” pieces of Purple Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz with pool (turquoise), espresso, purple and gold metallic alcohol inks. Allow some of the original color of the Shimmer Sheetz to remain visible between the randomly applied inks.

???????????????????????????????

3. Mixed media side pieces: Cut one 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz in half (two 5” x 6” pieces). Cut sparkly mesh 5” x 6” to cover both pieces. Set sewing machine to 7 stitches per inch. Using tan thread, randomly stitch through both layers – mesh and Shimmer Sheetz. Switch to purple thread and continue stitching in different directions. (No need to switch the bobbin when changing to purple.)

???????????????????????????????

4. Two-pattern embossed side pieces: Cut one 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz in half (two 5” x 6” pieces). Orient the pieces so they are vertical rectangles. Emboss the bottom 4” of each piece with Bouquet folder. Leave an eighth-inch space and emboss the remaining portion of the rectangle with Spring Leaves folder. Lightly sand to bring out the embossed details. Wipe sanded surfaces with damp paper towel. To create further contrast on these two side pieces, cover embossed flowers with paper to protect it; lightly apply purple alcohol ink to raised portion of Spring Leaves.

5. Top piece: Cut a 5” square from remaining 5” x 12” piece of alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz. Back with double sided adhesive sheet. (Do not expose the adhesive till step 6.) Place tissue box upside down on the back of the Shimmer Sheetz square and trace the opening. Cut out the opening. (Tip: Use short, sharp scissors to ensure smooth curves along the cutting line.)

6. Finishing: Back the four side pieces with double sided adhesive sheet. Working one piece at a time expose the adhesive and put the top and side pieces onto the tissue box (mixed media pieces on two adjacent sides, embossed pieces on the two remaining sides).
