Judi Kauffman is guest designing today! Welcome back, Judi – What have you been up to?
I’ve been making cards to help with the launch of Flower Cuties 1 and 2, my newest Elizabeth Craft Designs peel-offs. I made two batches. One is super fast – color, cut, layer and add a pre-printed chipboard shape. The other includes lots of layering and some fussy cutting. They’re easy, too, but take a bit more time. I always work “By the Batch” method and highly recommend it. In fact, that’s the name of my last book…
BATCH 1 – SUPER FAST
1. Place black outline Flower Cuties onto smooth white cardstock, leaving space between them for cutting rectangles later.
2. Color with alcohol based markers in colors of choice or as shown, filling each section with solid color. Other options: Work atop glitter, use a blending pen, choose watercolors or colored pencils instead of markers. Using a light marker, add a halo-style outline around the Cutie as shown on “Believe” card with the butterfly on her shoulder.
3. Cut a rectangle around each Flower Cutie. The shape and size of the rectangle depends on the Cutie and whether or not you added other elements (butterfly and flower pot as shown on “Dream Big” card with Ladybug Cutie, or more daffodils – not shown).
4. Layer rectangle onto solid color cardstock and trim for a narrow single or double border. Adhere to one or more patterned paper rectangles, centered or off center as shown or as you prefer, adding an additional solid color cardstock border between patterns if more than one is used (as on “Celebrate” card).
5. Adhere to solid color card base with left side fold, same size as patterned paper. Card base is not visible. Option: Instead of a folded card base, adhere to a Stand Up Helper card base, sized to the width of the rectangle.
6. Add a pre-printed chipboard shape.

BATCH 2 – LOTS OF LAYERING
1. Place black outline Flower Cuties and small extra pieces* onto smooth white cardstock, leaving about 1/2″ between them. (*Extra pieces include flowers, water droplets, butterflies, leaves, flowers, and elements for layering on clothing.)
2. Color with markers in colors of choice or as shown, filling each section with solid color. Other options: Work atop glitter, use a blending pen, choose watercolors or colored pencils instead of markers. Using a light marker, add a halo-style outline around the Cutie (as shown on “Ladybug Cutie” and Butterfly Cutie” cards).
3. Using Pigma Micron 01 and Gelly Roll Moonlight and Gelly Roll Medium in White, draw faces on the Cuties. Add doodles and dots to the “Ladybug Cutie” using Pigma Micron 01 in Black and Gelly Roll Medium in White.
4. Fussy cutting: Use sharp, fine point scissors to cut around each Flower Cutie and all of the extra pieces. Leave a narrow border around the Cuties that have halo-style color surrounding them; cut right up to the black outline on all other elements. Working on a cutting mat, use a craft knife to carefully cut the small interior spaces (next to the neck, between feet and legs, etc).
5. Refer to photos for ideas on how to layer and assemble card backgrounds using a mix of embossed and sanded Shimmer Sheetz, solid color and patterned cardstock, peel-offs including Borders and Glitter Dots, and pre-printed chipboard shapes. Adhere the layers with strips of double-sided adhesive sheet. (Borders on “Butterfly Cutie” card are leftovers from Peel-offs sheet 1275, the lacy Peel-off used on “Ladybug Cutie” card.)
6. Adhere completed layered background to a left fold card base. Card base is completely covered and not visible in project photos.
7. Using foam dots or tape for dimension, layer the Flower Cuties and all extra elements (except for water droplets) onto the cards. Use a glue stick or dab of craft glue to attach water droplets below watering can. TIP: Position the add-ons slightly askew, angled to create the look of extra petals, leaves and flowers. For example, notice the difference between the flowers dangling from the skirt on the Butterfly Cutie in the Batch 1 and Batch 2 cards. Because they are tilted on Batch 2 card, it looks like 12 flowers instead of 6.
8. Options: Instead of a folded card base, adhere to a Stand Up Helper card base, sized to the width of the rectangle.
