Susan's Garden Club Susan's Garden Designer Challenge

Susan’s Garden Designer Challenge – July

July 11, 2017

Hi everyone!

Welcome to our first Susan’s Garden Design Team Designer Challenge. Some of you asked for this challenge earlier in the year and we are so happy to finally be able to include it.

Susan Tierney-Cockburn designs flower dies that are realistic, just like those we find in nature, and they are scaled so they can be used together in bouquets. For our first challenge let’s celebrate with flowers! Create a card/project anything you want as long as it includes one or more of Susan’s Garden flowers.

For our Challenge today we are giving away a Susan’s Garden Prize Pack which includes: Garden Notes Square Window & Flower Box, Sunflower 2 and an All Metal Tool Kit to 3 winners.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this blog post below and answer this question: What  is your favorite flower from the Garden Notes collection?

We will select 3 lucky winners in a random drawing.

The winners will be announced on Friday, July 14th, here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog.

Now let’s take a look at the wonderful creations our talented Design Team have created for the Challenge this month. For more information about the cards, click on the designer’s name under each card to be taken to the designer’s blog post and open the project in a new window.

Selma Stevenson starts us off this month with a colorful card featuring Garden Notes – Grapevine Wreath and Garden Notes – Lily 2 from Susan’s Garden using White, Dark Chocolate, Sunflower and True Green Soft  Finish Cardstock. Selma used ModaScrap’s Romantic Corner & Pair of Leaves 1 die sets and the Celebrate sentiment from Els van de Burgt Studio. She also included the bird from Krista Schneider’s Bird-day Party Clear Stamps and coordinating dies.

Christine Pooler is sending hugs with the beautiful card above. To create her card, Christine used the Garden Notes Dahlia from Susan’s Garden along with the A Way with Words – Sending Hugs Kisses and Corners 1 from Els van de Burgt Studio. She also used White Soft Finish Cardstock and PanPastels Set 3.

Anita Kejriwal has used the Garden Notes – Alstroemeria from Susan’s Garden to create the beautiful card above. Anita also used papers from ModaScrap Sweet Vintage Rose Paper Pack as well as sentiments from the Dreams Sentiments Clear Stamp set from Joset Designs.

Angela Whelton  is next with a cup full of flowers. Angela chose the Garden Notes Day Lily and Garden Notes  Victorian Tea Cup and Saucer from Susan’s Garden to create her card. She also used the Fitted Frames 1 Lace Rectangles and Leafy Branch from Els van de Burgt Studio, White Soft Finish Cardstock, ModaScrap Sweet Vintage Rose Paper Pack and PanPastels 2.

Pavitra Chanchal has created a bunch of peonies for her card using the Garden Notes Peony 2 and Garden Notes Fairy – Rose Petal from Susan’s Garden. She also used the ModaScrap Oriental Card, General Sentiments Clear Stamps from Joset Designs and Mustard Soft Finish Cardstock.

Shalini Pahwa says hello to us with her card. She used Garden Notes Sunflower 2 from Susan’s Garden. Other dies include ModaScrap Flower Lace 2 and Postage Stamp Rectangles from Els van de Burgt Studio. For the background of her card, Shalini chose the Paisley Stage it Stencil. The sentiment is from the General Sentiments Clear Stamp set from Joset Designs.

Piyanki Biswas shares a piece of bottle art she has created using the Garden Notes – Tuberous Begonia from Susan’s Garden.  She used White Soft Finish Cardstock and PanPastels to create her flowers.

I have fallen head over heels in love with all the Susan’s Garden Club flowers and am always delighted to see the different interpretations the design team apply to using the same dies. I am just beginning to learn how to create the exquisite flowers by following the team members advice and using You Tube for tutorials. Hard to choose a favourite flower from the collection but I would probably favour the pansy if I must choose just one.

How can I choose! They are all so beautiful. I started with the lily. Then thought about the peony. The Dahlia is beautiful. But I guess my homey feeling picked the sunflower as my fav. I really wish I could choose all of them but my neighbor plants sunflowers outside of my Kitchen window, so I watch the baby birds, bees, and butterflies on the sunflowers. Thanks for the chance to win! Love this!

Really…how do you pick just one to love? They are all just beautiful and so well proportioned for display on a card! I think I would have to pick the peony, it is a flower that does not grow in the South.

ECD is my Go-To die for card making.

  • Reply Barbara Worthington July 11, 2017 at 11:24 am

My favorite flower has to be the hydrangea. Being brought up in New York over 50 years ago, I remember the beautiful hydrangeas in my grandmother’s garden. We would go to her house while waiting for the bus and she would cut a bouquet for our teacher. Needless to say , our teachers loved us, I alter the different color paper with distress crayons so that when the flowers are die cut they area different shades. Beautiful and so realistic.

I’d have to say my favorites are a toss up between the sunflower 2 (you can make so many flowers from it) and the tuberous begonia (they’re just so cool). I know you’re only supposed to have one favorite, but it took me too long to just narrow it down to those two, I had to list them both.

  • Reply Kathy Robinson July 11, 2017 at 11:16 am

I just had a wonderful thought, upon making my hydrangeas on a piece of paper before I transfer to my card. I add a tiny bit of perfume to the flowers. Does not have to be a lot. Just a tiny bit. Like the gorgeous roses!

  • Reply Charline H July 11, 2017 at 11:14 am

What a hard question. There are five flowers that call my name, Jasmine, (in nature I love them for their scent), Magnolia, Peony, Gerbera (they always make me happy ) and the Dogwood ( my province’s official flower) . If I was pushed to name only one, it would be the Peony in real life but the Gerbera in my paper crafting. You can make the Gerbera in so many different colours and they are just fun to make.

I love all of the flower collections Susan has done over the years. I own many and use them frequently. My favourite Garden Notes is Alstroemeria. They’re very beautiful, delicate , feminine and pack a bunch. Delightful too !

All the cards are beautiful. I especially like the sunflower card. It reminds me of all the sunflowers I saw on a trip to Switzerland.

My favorite flower is the dahlia.

All the ladies on the design team did an exceptional job. If I had to pick a favorite it would be the Alstroemeria that Anita Kejriwal used in her card. Her flowers look so delicate and realistic and I love the deconstructed look of the card and how the individual elements just work. The drops were such a nice touch. I am a real fan of the Garden notes collection. The first time I saw a card made with the flowers I was blown away. The dies allow even the most novice crafter to make realistic flowers using Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s method to shape and color them.
