A Way With Words

Summer Lantern Garland

July 7, 2018

How cute are these!?  Hi there, it’s Suzanne today with this sweet project that is just so much fun!  Let’s alter the Gable Box, which is perfect for a favour box, but can be so much more!  By making these into lanterns they can light up a table or brighten a summer party.

Let’s make a garland of Gable Box lanterns! Here is how you can do it:

Instructions:

Step 1 – Die cut lanterns from bright patterned paper (or pastels if they’re for a baby shower!). There are five in this string.  I envisioned a paper with bright ripe berries and vibrant greens, but when I went hunting in my stash I realized I was more of a muted colour girl….  I will have to change my ways!

Step 2 – Use a bone folder to fold all score lines upwards, then spread them flat again.

Step 3 – Position the smallest Stitched Square die in the middle of one side panel and die cut a window. Now, if you’re clever (and your cardstock is not too thick), you will see that you can fold the box in half and die cut through two layers at once!  Half the work!  If might help to mark the position of the square die with a soapstone pencil or lightly with a lead pencil to help line them up.

Step 4 – Use the second smallest Stitched Square die to die cut vellum panels. Since vellum is thinner, I cut a large piece into strips, stacked the strips and die cut four panels at once with each pass through the machine.  That’s all the panels for one lantern in one cut!  I used the Stitched Squares for this project because I liked the size of the window.

Step 5 – Apply adhesive around the openings in the windows and adhere vellum panels. Apply adhesive to the tab and assemble the body.  Apply adhesive to the base to complete the box lantern.

Step 6 – Thread your lights through the hearts at the top and turn every other light downwards inside the box. There are many types of mini lights, so space your lanterns out in a pleasing array.  An alternative is to use a string and put flameless votive tea lights in each lantern.

Hang and enjoy!!  Party time!

If you’d like to see a little more detail, I’ve created a video tutorial for constructing the Gable Boxes.  There is also information on converting them to lanterns and stringing them into a garland, along with some additional ideas!   Have fun!
