Spring Birthday Wishes

Hello, everyone. Christine Pooler here from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Design Team.  Spring is in the air, although here in Maine it is still a bit away from us.

My post today is a 6 X 6 card with spring flowers made from some of Susan’s Garden Notes dies.  I have also added some pussy willow branches, a sure sign of spring.

Let’s get started!

  1.  Using 80lb White Soft Finish Cardstock to form a 6″ X 6″ card base. The card is flat, to be displayed on a Card Stand/Easel. If you prefer, make a side- or top-fold card base instead of a flat square.
  2.   Cut 3 Round Grapevine Wreaths from brown cardstock. Then, using PanPastels set 3, do a little shading with brown and yellow.  Place wreaths on molding mat, one at a time, and shape with medium ball stylus shaping tool.  Glue the 3 wreaths together using a clear drying glue (Kids Choice used here) offsetting the layers rather than matching them up so the wreath will appear to have more fullness.
  3.   Cut, shade and shape flowers using Susan’s tutorial videos Hyacinth, Tulip, and Daffodil as a guide.  On this card there are 2 Hyacinths, 3 Daffodils and 7 Tulips.
  4. To make pussy willow branches cut several branches from the Flourishes and Branches die set using brown cardstock.  Working one branch at a time and a few nubs (tips) at a time, put a small amount of clear drying glue (again, Kids Choice) on each nub of the branch then sprinkle White Flower Soft onto the wet glue.  Let set a few minutes then use your fingers to shape the white buds.  If you want them larger just add more glue and White Flower Soft until satisfied.
  5.  Die cut Happy Birthday twice, once from white cardstock and once from purple.  Attach the white over the top of the purple, offsetting just a little to create the shadow.
  6. Die cut 4 corners from white cardstock. Tip: Back cardstock with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape before cutting instead of using glue in step 7.
  7. Assemble card by attaching 5-3/4″ X 5-3/4″ green patterned paper to front of card base using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape.  Using clear drying glue attach the wreath to center of card. Add flowers and pussy willow branches.  Attach the layered Happy Birthday and the corners.
  8. For display – Cut 2 Card Stand/Easel pieces. Glue together for added stability. Emboss with Bark embossing folder. Review Els van de Burgt’s video found here. Tip: The Card Stand/Easel can be mailed flat!
