Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Ten-Minute Christmas Cards with Removable Ornaments

December 2, 2018

By Judi Kauffman

I always seem to need just a few more Christmas cards (sound familiar?), so I’ve devised a strategy for making some that are simple and fast, but don’t look that way! Today’s tutorial is a trio that uses a non-traditional palette. I have lots of friends with taste as quirky as mine… I’m calling it a ten-minute card, but it probably won’t take that long.

I timed myself: Die cut two circles (2 minutes or less!), emboss and sand the smaller circle (2 minutes or less), add scrapbook paper to card front (1 minute at most), layer and complete the ornament (about 2 minutes), attach ornament to card front (30 seconds or less). This leaves a couple of minutes to unwrap and savor a peppermint patty while admiring your creation!

Instructions:

Step 1 – Choose two or more Shimmer Sheetz colors as the starting point. (Shown: White, Pink, and Green Iridescent) Pick sparkly scrapbook paper to coordinate with the SS. Adhere a 4” x 5” piece of the scrapbook paper to an A2 side-fold card base in a coordinating solid color.

Step 2 – Using Fitted Circles or other circle dies of choice, die cut two Shimmer Sheetz circles in different colors (one no larger than 3” to 3.5” and one a size or two smaller). REMINDER: A metal adaptor plate or Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate is required for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you are new to this technique.

Step 3 – Emboss the smaller circle with a snowflake or other holiday theme pattern. Sand the side where the pattern is de-bossed. Wipe with a damp paper towel to remove the sanded dust. NOTE: Sanding will reveal the core color of the Shimmer Sheetz. For Iridescent colors, as shown, the core is white; for Gemstone colors, the core is silver; for Metallic colors, the core is transparent.

Step 4 – Adhere smaller circle to larger one using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Add an 8mm ivory half-pearl to the center of the snowflake. If using a different embossing folder, embellish with half-pearls or gems as desired.

Step 5 – Use an awl or piercing tool to pierce a small hole at the top of the ornament. Thread a needle with a 7” piece of fine metallic braid and bring it through the hole; tie with an overhand knot to form the hanging loop.

Step 6 – To make the ornament appear that it is hanging on the card front, attach it with a mini binder clip or an organza bow to temporarily secure it.

MORE OPTIONS:

*Stick with traditional holiday colors.

*Go for tone-on-tone and use only shades of white and ivory.

*Go for glitz and glam. Use only metallics in gold and silver; substitute rhinestones for pearls.

*Instead of an embossed snowflake, add a die cut snowflake or other embellishment to the smaller circle.

*Mix smooth-edge circles with decorative-edge circles instead of using two that match.

*Instead of ‘hanging’ the ornament from a clip or a bow, die cut a bough or branch or bow and suspend the ornament from it. (This adds only a couple of minutes to the project.)

Many thanks, Jean. I never get tired or making Shimmer Sheetz ornaments. They’re light as a feather and won’t break and they can be mailed because they’re flat. When I say there are endless options, it’s truly the case.

These are so pretty! I do have shimmer sheets, but was wondering who makes the sparkly scrapbook paper? Have never seen this before!

Thank you, Joyce. I used vintage paper from K&Company, but any similar overall floral or paisley pattern can be ‘glittered up’ with some glue and Silk Microfine Glitter or with glitter glue for coarser sparkle. And there are still plenty of sparkly glittered papers available, (I’m just trying to use up what I havc!)
