Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Card Stand/Easels

November 5, 2017

By Judi Kauffman

Shimmer Sheetz is sturdy and durable and light as a feather**, ideal for making card stands to send along with your cards! The Card Stand/Easel die is just under 5” tall x 6” wide – the easels fit into an A7 (5” x 7”) envelope when flat, an A2 envelope when folded in half. (**Easels shown weigh .05 oz. including the decorations.)

I designed a trio to highlight the versatility of the die. Each incorporates vinyl peel-offs. Like Shimmer Sheetz, the peel-offs are waterproof. If the easel gets dusty it can be wiped with a damp cloth.

First up: Orange Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz with lacy black ‘Ribbon Radar’ border peel-offs for fall theme cards or those special Halloween cards you’re not yet ready to tuck away. Peel-offs were lined up on the SS prior to cutting so all edges are crisp and finished. (Tip: Combine the lacy ribbon pieces with the bold negative strips or ‘leftovers’ to create an interesting design as shown, not just the lacy pieces.)

Next: Blue Iridescent SS with glittery silver snowflakes for winter and holiday cards. Peel-offs were added in a symmetrical arrangement AFTER the easel was die cut and where the snowflakes extended past the edges they were trimmed away with fine point scissors.

Finally: Raspberry Metallic SS with Glitter Flowers in Gold/Silver for birthdays, feminine cards, and more. Most of the flowers are lined up in diagonal rows, the rest randomly sprinkled to fill the space and create more visual interest.

YOUR TURN

  1. If you are new to die cutting Shimmer Sheetz, watch Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial. A metal adaptor plate in your machine’s cutting sandwich (or the Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate) is REQUIRED for die cutting SS – the cutting side of the die faces down toward the metal plate; the SS goes face up in between.

  1. Die cut easels as follows:

*If using long border strip-style peel-offs, position the peel-offs prior to die cutting.

*If using peel-offs that need to be positioned in a symmetrical pattern or are small enough to be easily trimmed at the edges of the easel, die cut prior to adding the stickers.

MORE IDEAS AND OPTIONS

*Use neutral colors like Basic Black or Bronze Metallic Shimmer Sheetz for easels to use year-round. Display favorite photos, a calendar, etc.

*Switch the color combination to coordinate with the card being sent or to go with special cards you have received!

*Alter the Shimmer Sheetz with Tim Holtz/Ranger Alcohol Inks instead of using peel-off decorations.

*Stamp an allover pattern with StazOn ink prior to die cutting.

*Use an embossing folder to add texture after die cutting. If the folder isn’t big enough to emboss the entire surface in one pass, emboss one side at a time.

*Before adding them to the easel, alter the peel-offs with Alcohol Inks, StazOn applied straight from the pad, or alcohol-based markers to add even more possibilities.

*Decorate the back of the easel, too, if it will be displayed where both sides are visible (like on the desk in an office).

Very clever! I just used my easel for a card gift, but never thought of decorating it, as I was so focused on the card…next time, I’ll remember – it makes it special!
