I love making pocket cards. They’re easy, but impressive, the kind of card that announces ‘you’re worth the effort’! This time I designed a trio, working in an assembly-line fashion – all die cutting first, then all assembly. Using the same color palette throughout made it easy to coordinate all of the elements: bright yellow cardstock for the lacy portion of the pocket, a mix of red, burgundy, teal, and orange cardstock for the rest of the layers and some of the die cuts, Shimmer Sheetz for everything else.
Each pocket is lined with alcohol ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz, hand cut to fit. Each card is backed with contrasting cardstock, visible as a border and extending up an inch at the top for stability. All three cards include inserts that incorporate a die cut sentiment plus die cut flowers or leaves. The horizontal pocket also includes a layered flower with sparkly thread knotted to create the stamens. The leaf pocket has leaves angled atop a rectangle on the front as an extra accent.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Die cut pockets, sentiments and embellishments. There are many previous tutorials explaining how to die cut Shimmer Sheetz – Els van de Burgt has an excellent one on YouTube, so I won’t go into detail about that technique here. Reminder: A metal adaptor plate is required for cutting Shimmer Sheetz and highly recommended for cutting intricate designs like the pockets.
- To alter Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks, simply dab on the colors with an ink applicator tool in a random manner, air dry for a couple of minutes and you’re ready to roll.
- Using the photos for inspiration and placement of all elements, complete the pockets and insert cards. Let your imagination soar! Switch to whatever color combination you prefer. Tuck photos inside the pockets instead of insert cards as shown. Use the pockets on a scrapbook layout.
- More Options: Line the pocket with patterned paper or fabric if you want less sparkle. Skip the alcohol inks if you want MORE sparkle! Instead of flat and low-relief embellishments, go for more dimension.

Yes, thanks for the tip! I look forward to making a card, or two. 🙂
Are you going to do a video instruction for this? Looks a little complicated.
No plans for a video, but I hope that if you watch Els van de Burgt’s YouTube video about how to die-cut Shimmer Sheetz and then follow my step by step written instructions you’ll be okay. If you have more questions, please be in touch! The key is to line only the open area of the pocket and the edge just around that open area, but NOT the long tabs that get folded back (those tabs are cardstock only). Does that help?
The links seem to not work for the dies you used 🙁 Meanwhile, these are beautiful. I am going to go poor buying all the dies and Shimmer Sheetz that you use 🙂
Thanks for letting us know about the links not working properly, they have been fixed now.
beautiful thank you for sharing
