Hot Air Balloons

March 23, 2018

Hi Everyone!  Marilyn here and today I am sharing a card made using a wet-on-wet technique to create a sparkly background.  It’s quick, easy, and fun to do.  Details are below.

Step 1:  Assemble a 6″ x 6″ piece of watercolor paper, water brush, water mister and a piece of acrylic or non-stick craft mat with blue and yellow Distress Inks applied to it.

This is a wet-on-wet technique – work quickly or keep misting the surface with water throughout the process to create the background. First, mist the paper with water, then dip it into the blue ink. While the paper is wet, randomly scatter/flick the yellow ink onto it using the water brush dipped into the ink on the acrylic.

Step 3:  Squeeze out a small puddle of ink from the Clear Wink of Stella pen.  Mist paper again and using the tip of the brush, spatter onto the wet surface and then set aside to dry while preparing the die cuts.

Step 4:  From white cardstock, cut the two olid balloons but do not remove them from the die.  From a sheet of  white cardstock backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, cut the two detailed balloon overlays.

Step 5:  It isn’t necessary, but trimming the tail from the balloon die makes it easier to adhere the detailed overlays. Remove the solid shape from the die and take off the backing from the tape.  Place down over the detail balloon piece while the detail piece is still in the die.  The reason for attaching the tape is to keep the intricate details in the die so you can add the glitter later.

Step 6:  When finished, remove from die, discard scraps in the ropes of the balloon but keep the intricate detail pieces attached to the tape until finished colouring.

Step 7:    Attach tape to another piece of white cardstock and cut out the baskets.

Step 8:  Colour the balloons and ropes.

Step 9:  Glue the baskets onto the balloons, remove the tape and intricate pieces on the larger balloon.

Step 10:  Add the Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, brush off excess and return it to the jar. Polish with a fingertip to bring out the maximum sparkle.

Step 11:  Add a piece of Clear Double Sided Tape to white cardstock and cut three clouds.  Repeat the procedure with yellow cardstock and cut out the sun and its round center.  Remove the paper so the sticky side of the tape is exposed and then add glitter and polish.

Step 12:  Add a bit of colour around the edges of the clouds and sun, using very little hand pressure so the nibs of the pens won’t begin to damage the glittered surfaces.

Step 12:  Cut a piece of navy cardstock to 5.75″ x 11.5″; score and fold at 5.75 for the top-fold card base. Add a 5.5″ x 5.5″ white cardstock square, centered on the front.  Trim the inked watercolour paper to 5.25″ x 5.25″. (Adhere the layers with 10mm Clear Double Sided Tape.)

Step 13:  Arrange and adhere the sun, clouds and balloons on the card front as shown using foam dots behind some of the elements for dimension and you are done!

Thank you for stopping by and have a great week!
