Hey Friends, it is EK here and I thought I’d share just a bit of holiday inking with you today using some A Way With Words holiday dies. Recently I introduced my eight-year-old crafter to Distress Inks, and realized that I have not been taking advantage of all the cool things you can do with them, especially when it comes to stenciling. Then I wondered how well the A Way With Words sentiment dies would hold up as stencils and I was off to the races.
Step One: Trim a piece of True Green Soft Finish Cardstock to 12×6 inches and score and fold at the 6 inch mark to make a 6×6 card base. Trim second piece of True Green Soft Finish Cardstock to 6×6 inches. Trim a piece of Silver Gray Soft Finish cardstock to 5.75×5.75 inches.
Step Two: Die cut the reindeer and HoHoHo sentiment from the A Way With Words – Flourished Christmas die set and the sentiment from the A Way With Words – Merry Christmas die out of 100lb White Soft Finish Cardstock, letting the smooth side be on top. Also die cut several more reindeer and hohoho sentiments for the next step.
Step Three: To create ‘masks’ with temporary hold, apply some ZIG Two Way Glue to the back of the die cuts and let dry. When the glue is dry it is tacky, providing a temporary hold. The die cut masks will be easy to pull up and remove after they are used.
Step Four: arrange and press the die cut in place on the silver gray cardstock, letting some of them extend past the edges. Refer to the photo below.
Step Five: Dab the first two Distress Inks over the die cut masks using a blender sponge. The texture of the Soft Finish Cardstock creates a fun dappled effect when inks are pounced and dabbed onto the surface.
Step Six: Repeat with all the other colors. (As shown: Barn Door, Festive Berries, Aged Mahogany, plus Spiced Marmalade and Fossilized Amber to warm up the project.)
Step Seven: Gently peel up the masks and set them aside to use in an upcoming step!
Step Eight: Using the largest Stitched Squares die, die cut the 6×6 True Green Soft Finish Cardstock, creating a plain square frame with open window in the center.
Step Nine: Adhere the gray inked square to the green square 6×6 card front using 10mm Clear Double Sided Tape.
Step Ten: Using 6mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive add the green frame over the card front.
Step Eleven: Using Kids Choice Glue, adhere the die cuts (previously used as masks), offsset so that some of the gray areas show as a light shadow. Trim die cuts at the outer edges as shown.
Your fun and inky holiday card is ready to send! I did not intend to use the die cut masks in the final project, but I loved the idea of them popping off the page and onto the border.
Thank you for peeking in today, and I hope this holiday season finds you healthy, happy and home!
