Happy Birthday Card – Two Cards with one Die cut using Washi Tape and Silk Microfine Glitter

August 12, 2017

Hello!  Diana here today with not just one but two cards to share with you using just one die.  The initial setup takes a bit more time but it makes for two fun and shimmery cards.  I chose to use the A Way With Words Happy Birthday die as my focal point.  Sometimes you just don’t want to cover up the background too much, right?

Instructions:

Step 1 – Select 7 different washi tapes that are shiny or glittery in nature.  Adhere them to a white card stock trimmed to 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″.   Wrap the edges around the white card stock to make sure it does not flip up after handling.  Use the gridlines on my sheet to keep the lines straight but leaving some gaps between the tapes.

Step 2 – To fill in the gaps, use 10mm double sided adhesive and rubbed in different colors of the silk microfine glitter, one at a time.

Step 3 – I then placed my Happy Birthday die on the finished background and die cut out the Happy Birthday, being careful not to lose any of the small pieces.

Step 4 – After applying the negative of the die (the washi/glitter background) on a white A2 card base, I die cut another Happy Birthday out of white card stock.  This was then placed inside of the negative space so that I would know where all the little pieces go back in.

Step 4.  I briefly thought about placing the die cut back on the card but it disappeared a bit too much for my taste so I set it aside and die cut 5 more white Happy Birthday.

Step 5.  Glue and stack them all together and place them on top of the washi/glitter background.   I loved how much cleaner and dimensional it looked with the stacked lettering.

Step 6 –  With the leftover die cut of the Happy Birthday I did not use, I made a shaker card by making a rectangle frame out of metallic late card stock.

Step 7 –  Adhered a sheet of acetate to the frame and pop up with foam tape to make a shaker window.

Step 8 –  Fill window with various shaped glitter and adhere to a silver backing.  The large shaker element was then glued to a black A2 card base.

Step 9 –  Die cut the Happy Birthday out of black card stock and offset the washi/glitter Happy Birthday to the black die cut for a shadow effect and glue onto the acetate window.

One can never have too many birthday cards on hand so this is a great way to use the more elaborate backgrounds and incorporate one fancy cut into two cards.
