Stamped Easter Egg Napkins

March 8, 2016

Hi there! It’s Marsha here today with a fun Easter craft that you can easily do with kids!

Easter brunch is a tradition in my family and we tend to have the same festive foods on the table each year. I usually buy a bunch of spring-coloured paper napkins to put on the table, but this year I thought it would be fun to decorate cotton napkins with fabric paint.

Steps to decorate the napkins:
1. Read the fabric paint manufacturer’s directions. It’s highly recommended to pre-wash new napkins to remove the sizing before you start stamping. This ensures that the paint can permeate the threads in the napkins.

2. Back a couple of scraps of craft foam with Clear Double-Sided Adhesive. Use the Easter Eggs die set to die cut the three overlays and two of the coordinating solid eggs in each size.

3. Assemble the foam stamps: Peel the backing from the solid egg and stick it on a coordinating (just craft foam) egg. Then peel the backing from the same sized overlay and stick it on the double foam solid egg.

4. Temporarily mount your stamp to an acrylic block with a little strip of Clear Double-Sided Adhesive Tape or a low-tack (repositionable) tape.

5. Use a brayer to roll fabric paint onto the stamp or use a sponge to dab the paint on. Evenly cover the stamp with fabric paint, not too thick so the details won’t get lost. Also keep an eye out for excess paint in the stamp crevices because this will cause blobs of paint in your stamped image!

Practice stamping on a fabric scrap first if needed. Smooth, tightly-woven fabric napkins work best.

6. Stamp your pattern. Line the eggs up in rows or stamp them in a random design. Work quickly to ensure that the paint doesn’t dry on your stamp.

7. You can also adhere more than one stamp onto a single acrylic block to speed things up.

8. Don’t forget the solid side of the stamp. For a different look, stamp the solid eggs first and then stamp over them with the matching size overlay.

9. Once you are done stamping, dry and set the fabric paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some paints require heat setting in order to become permanent and washable, other brands need to cure for 48 hours or more before the napkins can be used.

Thanks ladies! I don’t know if it will work on paper napkins Angela! Maybe if you use a waterproof ink? My feeling is that regular paint might not be the safest option for a napkin…
