Colorful Happy ‘Bird-Day’ Card

Happy Bird-Day Card - Front
Hey There! This is Elena. I am a brand new member of the Coloring Design Team, thrilled to bring you my very first post. My niece, Hannah, is turning 7 this month and she is quite an adorable character! I couldn’t wait to break out the brand new Bird-Day Party stamps and dies along with the Spiral Circle Pull Card Die, Silk Microfine Glitter and more to make a birthday card that is as fun and wacky as she can be.

Here’s how I created the card:

  1. Stamp all of the Bird-Day Party stamps except the balloon, asterisk/star and bunch of three feathers onto 85 lb. White Soft Finish using black permanent ink. Color the stamped images using your favorite alcohol markers. I used Spectrum Noir in the following colors – PL1, BP2, BP6 (pinks), CG1, DG1 (greens), TB1, TB3, TB5 (blues), CT2, CT4 (yellows), OR1, CR10 (oranges). For the greeting, I used Distress Markers in Picked Raspberry, Tumbled Glass, Twisted Citron, and Squeezed Lemonade because the letters are too skinny for the Spectrum Noir markers to color. Cut out the images using the coordinating Bird-Day Party dies.
  2. Cut a piece of 100 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock to 7 ¼” x 5 ½” and fold in half at 3 5/8”. Line up the nubs on the largest die in the Spiral Circle Pull Card die set with the center fold in the cardstock and roughly centered vertically. Die cut, and fold back the front half by the circle to create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card base. Tuck the folded half under the tabs on the opposite panel to secure in place if needed. Cut 2 pieces of Whisper Blue Soft Finish Cardstock to 2 1/8” x 5 ½” to cover the side panels. Cut the half circle out of the panel for the front by placing the blue piece over half of the circle on the front to line up the die correctly and cut it out.
  3. Using 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, adhere the blue panels over the white card base panels. Position the hearts side of the Hearts & Paw Prints stencil over one of the blue side panels so most of it curves across the panel. On the front panel the bulk of the hearts should be at the top; on the back panel, they should be at the bottom. Tape the stencil down securely with removable/low tack tape so it is flat to the blue panel; also tape over any hearts that overlap off the blue panel as you only want complete hearts on the panel (Photo A). Using a palette knife, spread gel medium across the stencil so it fills in the hearts. Scrape to remove any excess and put back into the container (Photo B). Carefully peel off the tape and remove the stencil. Pour Diva Silk Microfine Glitter over the gel medium hearts and tap off any excess. If gel medium has leaked under the stencil and you have glitter somewhere you don’t want it, carefully scrape it off with a craft knife now while it is still wet (Photo C). Set aside to dry. Clean the stencil and palette knife right away with water. Once the first panel is dry, buff off any additional extra glitter with a soft brush. Turn the stencil 180 degrees and repeat on the opposite blue panel.
  4. Using the dies in the Spiral Circle Pull Card set, cut one solid circle and one circle with the spiral die in the middle from patterned paper that matches your bird coloring. Die cut 2 hearts from each of the following Soft Finish Cardstock colors – Rosebud, Sunflower, Spring Green. Cut 2 balloons each from the same colors of cardstock. Using the strings die from the Winter Mittens die set, cut 3 strings from Rich Black Soft Finish Cardstock and cut off the bows to create strings for the balloons. NOTE: It is advisable to put a Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet on the back of the paper for the balloons and strings before die cutting them out so they will become stickers, easy to adhere later.
  5. Using 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, adhere the solid patterned circle to the center of the circle on the front panel of the card. Trim off the tag on the presents and adhere them to the lower left corner of the front blue panel. Adhere the bird and cake in the center of the circle as shown in the photo; I used glue pen on the bird’s skinny legs.
  6. Open the card. Adhere the patterned paper circle with the spiral cut into it to the center back of the circle cut into the card base; only adhere the outside edge of the circle – the spiral must remain free. Once dry, put a strong adhesive on the center of the spiral (on the patterned side) and close the back of the card on to it to adhere the spiral to the inside of the card. Arrange and adhere the birds, greeting, birthday hat, flower, balloons and strings as shown in photo. The first 2 balloons on the left should connect to the bird’s tail. The 4 balloons on the right should connect to the base of the spiral. NOTE: You may want to score the greeting and bird tail where they overlap the fold to help the card fold easily.
  7. Using a glue pen, adhere the hearts to the spiral as shown in the photo. Adhere one yellow heart to cover the balloon strings that connect to the bottom of the spiral. Make sure the yellow heart does not cross onto the blue panel or it will be visible when the card is closed. Using a thin black marker, draw strings around the necks of the balloons. Draw a bow or knot around the bird’s tail that is on the circle to make it appear that the first two balloons are tied to him. If necessary, complete any balloon strings that lead to the heart at the bottom of the spiral.
  8. Close the card. On the front, use light pencil to draw balloon strings from where the die cut balloon strings are overlapped on the upper right by the front circle down to one of the candles on the cake. When you are happy with the lines, trace them with a thin black marker. Draw a small bow or knot on the candle where the strings connect to complete the effect. Enjoy your card!

At first glance this card seems a bit complicated, but it is actually easy to put together once you have all of the necessary pieces die cut. Believe me, the person who receives this card will LOVE it!!
