A Dahlia Canvas

June 28, 2017

Welcome friends to another post where I have used the beautiful Dahlias from Susan’s Garden, this time on a canvas. Creating the canvas reminded me of my childhood where I used to see my mother nurture these beauties while helping her in the garden. Working with flowers makes you fall in love with the nature all the more, and such has been my experience. Though I chose a canvas, you could adapt the idea for very special cards, shadow boxes, and other projects. Look at the close-ups and instructions then it’s your turn to replicate it! Instructions

  • Apply white gesso to a canvas board or stretched canvas.
  • Using a palette knife, randomly and unevenly apply texture pace to the canvas. No stencils were used for this project, but that is another option.
  • After the texture paste dries completely, use two or more spray paints to add color to the surface. Note that the colors on the sample overlap and drip, and are darker toward the top.
  • When the paints have dried, add strokes of soft gel medium and while it is wet sprinkle on some Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Once dry, polish with a fingertip to bring out the maximum sparkle in the glitter.
  • Die cut enough petals and leaves from White Soft Finish Cardstock to create two lush, multi-layered dahlias. Color the pieces, then shape and assemble per Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s instructions. (Use coloring medium of choice, Beacon Kids Choice Glue, the metal tool kit and molding mat – see supply list.)
  • Die cut a Romantic Corner, color with spray inks or with coloring medium of choice. Adhere a piece of the corner and then the two flowers. To complete the canvas, glue on some clusters of beads in colors that coordinate with the background.
  • Display on an easel or add a frame.

Piyanki, this is just so beautiful. I also love dahlias and am waiting for my Dinner Plate Dahlia to bloom. It has a couple of buds so I can’t wait! Your tutorial was really great also.
