Shimmer Sheetz

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Tissue Time

September 2, 2018

By Judi Kauffman

Guests often comment about my tissue boxes – I have decorated one with Shimmer Sheetz for almost every room in the house, and over the years I’ve made many for gifts. If you’re working ahead for the holidays, it’s a project I can highly recommend. They’re easy to customize and personalize, fast and simple to make.

I’ve posted tutorials in the past with other versions. These two are meant to evoke summer travels with beach and a steamer trunk as inspiration.

FOR BOTH BOXES

Cover the sides and top of a wooden boutique tissue box with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheets. Tip: Trace the top of the box and make a paper cutting template to use as a pattern when cutting adhesive sheet and when cutting Shimmer Sheetz for the top.

BEACH THEME BOX

Step 1 – Emboss four 5” x 6” pieces and one 5” x 5” piece of Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz with an allover shell pattern embossing folder. Lightly sand to bring out the silver core color in the SS and tone down some of the sparkle. Also cut and lightly sand four 5” x 1” strips of the same SS.

Step 2 – Use the paper template to cut the hole in the SS for the top of the box. Adhere the large pieces to the sides and the top square to the top of the box making sure that the five pieces meet neatly at the TOP edge. (The box will not be covered at the base – don’t worry…the next step will address that issue!)

Step 3 – Back the 1” strips with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape and add to the bottom of each side to form a decorative border around the base of the box. Add two Transparent/Gold Glitter Dots peel-offs at each corner of all four sides of the box to mimic nail heads.

STEAMER TRUNK THEME BOX

Step 1 – Alter four 5” x 6” pieces and one 5” x 5” piece of Ruby Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz with alcohol inks in shades of red, plus a bit of gold metallic.

Step 2 – Cut and lightly sand eight .5” x 6” strips and twelve .5” x 5” strips of the same SS. Also cut and lightly sand four corner pieces from Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz. Back all of these pieces with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape.

Step 3 – Using photos shown above and below as a reference, adhere ink-altered Shimmer Sheetz to sides and top of box per instructions for Beach Theme Box. (The box will not be covered at the base at this point, but don’t worry…you haven’t made a mistake and the next step will address that issue!)

Step 4 – Adhere the narrow strips to the box in this order: Vertical strips on sides, then horizontal strips around bottom edge of box and top edge on all four sides, then four strips around the top, finally the four corner pieces.

Step 5 – Accent the strips and corners with Transparent/Gold Glitter Dots peel-offs to mimic hardware on a steamer trunk.

My pleasure. I figure that even if most people just look at the projects on blogs and don’t actually do them there will always be a few who want complete instructions, so I put on my teacher hat and make sure I write as many details as I can!
