Dragonflies

April 6, 2018

Hi there! Marilyn here to share a card using the smooshing technique for my background along with glittering for the pretty die cut dragonflies. I’ve shown two backgrounds as options, one dark and one light, but I chose the lighter background for my card.

Step 1: Cut a 5.75″ x 11.5″ piece of blue cardstock, score at 5.75″ and fold in half. Also cut a 5.5″ x 5.5″ piece of green cardstock and a 5.25″ x 5.25″ piece of watercolor paper.  Set the cardstock aside.  Press the Bundled Sage ink pad onto a piece of acrylic or a non-stick craft mat to smear on the ink.

Step 2:  Lightly mist with water and smudge the wet ink around on the acrylic with your finger.

Step 3:  Lightly mist the watercolor paper and gently press the acrylic inked piece down onto the paper.  (If using a craft mat, press the watercolor paper onto the mat.) Repeat as needed to get the desired effect, keeping ink and paper wet while working. With paper towel, carefully blot off excess moisture.

Step 4:  Repeat the procedure using Tumbled Glass ink.

When happy with the effect, set aside to dry.  The top photo below shows a darker background, the bottom photo shows the lighter one.

Step 5:  Cover a piece of white cardstock with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet. Place the three dragonfly dies onto the tape and die cut. (This puts adhesive onto the FRONT of the dragonflies, ready to glitter in Step 7.) Step 6:  Remove the small scrap pieces from the die cuts if any of them haven’t fallen out. Also clean out the dies before storing them away.Step 7: Expose the adhesive, place the dragonflies sticky side UP in a coffee filter and sprinkle them to cover with Gold Silk Microfine Glitter. (Take care not to touch the exposed adhesive with your fingers, use tweezers or the release sheet instead.) When coated, brush off excess and return to the jar. Then gently polish the glitter with a fingertip to bring out the maximum sparkle! …Emphasis on the word ‘gently’ here – the dragonflies are intricate and somewhat fragile if polished too hard.

Step 8:  Using VersaMark ink and gold embossing powder, stamp and heat emboss the word ‘thanks’ toward the bottom right.Step 9: Tape strips of 3mm Transparent Double Sided Tape around the edges of the square as shown in the photo above. Expose the adhesive and glitter the tape same as was done with the dragonflies. Optional (shown): Scatter some sprinkles of gold embossing powder onto the background and heat emboss from underneath the paper so the powder won’t blow away.

Step 10:  Adhere the green cardstock topped with the glittered/stamped background square to the blue card base with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Gently bend the dragonflies’ wings upward for dimension. Glue them to the card front with glue only along the bodies. Refer to the photo for placement (dragonflies will appear to be flying like a group of winged friends!).

Thank you for stopping by and have a pretty, glittery kind of day!
