Summer Hydrangeas

By Judi Kauffman Summer Hydrangeas A

Happy July, everyone. I’m back with a card that celebrates one of my favorite plants – the hydrangea bush. We planted our own two decades ago. It has survived Washington heat waves, summers with too much rain or two little and my not-so-expert annual pruning. The soil seems to be just right, enough of whatever minerals turn the flowers blue/purple with a tinge of pink, colors that are surprisingly easy to capture with markers or colored pencils.

Here’s to hydrangeas – on cards and in the garden!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Put the black outline peel-offs onto white cardstock. Color with markers or pencils of choice. I used Winsor & Newton ProMarkers  in Lilac, Orchid, Amethyst, Pastel Blue, and Baby Pink for the florets; Sunflower for center of each floret; Green, Forest Green, and a tiny touch of Marine blended into the leaves.
  1. Fussy-cut around all three hydrangea heads as well as the individual leaves and 23 small florets. Set pieces aside.
  1. Prepare a 6.25” x 5.25” True Green Soft Finish Cardstock top-fold card base. Add two pieces of patterned paper to the card front leaving a quarter-inch border on all sides and overlapping the pieces toward the center (torn edge of one piece remaining visible).

Design Detour:

Be selective and intentional when deciding which parts of the patterned paper you’re using. I began with 12 x 12 sheets from BoBunny called Soiree ‘Tranquil’ (left side of card front) and Beautiful Dreamer ‘Reverie’ (right side). Note that I chose the part of the Reverie sheet that includes what appear to be overlapping photos and a note with the words ‘Don’t Forget’ held by a paperclip. And I picked part of the Tranquil sheet that includes text at the left corner and polka dots toward the right.

  1. Back pieces of Purple Iridescent and Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz and True Green Soft Finish Cardstock with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet. Die cut a 5” long Dotted Scallop Oval and a pair of Bead Strings 2 pieces (straight strips) from Purple Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Die cut the word Summer twice – once from Yellow Shimmer Sheetz and once from True Green Soft Finish Cardstock.

*Reminder: You MUST use a metal adaptor plate or the Sizzix Big Shot with Precision Base Plate when die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. The cutting side of the die must face the metal plate with Shimmer Sheetz in between, and these go inside your machine’s usual cutting ‘sandwich’. Review Els van de Burgt’s video tutorial if you are new to this technique.

  1. Assemble the card front in this order:

Oval

Bead Strings 2 (one strip across the top and one across the bottom)

The word Summer (yellow offset over green to provide a drop shadow)

Hydrangea heads and leaves (trim at the top edge)

Small individual florets (pop each one on a tiny piece of foam tape)

  1. Another option: Instead of outline peel-offs, make beautiful realistic dimensional hydrangeas using the Susan’s Garden Hydrangea die set by Susan Tierney-Cockburn!

It’s Jacky here. For my project today I have created a Stand Up Card using the new Dotted Scallop Circles and Ovals and Bead Strings 2 dies from Els Van de Burgt Studio. I have also used the Strawberries die set and clear stamps from Joset Designs.

Here’s how I created my card:

Step 1: Cut a piece of Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock measuring 5″ x 11″. Score at 3″ and 5-1/2″. Fold along score lines. Lightly score at 8-1/4″ but do not fold.

Step 2: Cut a piece of Celadon Green Soft Finish Cardstock of 2 ½” x 5″. Adhere the piece to the bottom of the card base.

Step 3: Using one of the Bead Strings 2 cut 3 bead strips in Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive prior to cutting.

Step 4: Die cut one Dotted Scallop Circle from White Soft Finish cardstock using the smallest Dotted Scallop Circle in the set. Use black ink to stamp ‘Just Bee-cause” onto the circle.

Step 5: Die cut one Stitched Oval from White Soft Finish Cardstock using the third largest die in the set.

Step 6: Die cut one Dotted Scallop Oval from Celadon Green Soft Finish Cardstock using the second largest die in the set.

Step 7: To create the Strawberries: Die cut one large solid strawberry and one small solid strawberry from Sunflower Soft Finish Cardstock. Die cut one large and one small strawberry stamen and one large and one small strawberry overlay from White Soft Finish Cardstock backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive prior to cutting. Using a Mini Ink Blending Tool to apply the ink, color overlays with Barn Door; color stamens with Mowed Lawn Ink. (Clean the tool between colors.) When ink is dry, assemble strawberries and adhere to card front as shown.

Step 8: To create the leaves: Die cut two strawberry leaves from White Soft Finish Cardstock. Color the leaves with Mowed Lawn Ink applied with a Mini Ink Blending Tool. For best results, work on top of a non-stick craft mat (or the leftover backing of an adhesive sheet) and start making circular motions with the inked tool while it is on the mat, working toward the edge of the cardstock and then onto the shape (edge to center so the darkest ink is at the outer areas). Tip: Use light hand pressure. You can always add more ink as needed.

Step 9: To create the bees: Die cut two bee bodies from black and yellow Velvet Adhesive Sheets. Die cut wings from White Soft Finish Cardstock. The bee with the open wings will go on the bottom Celadon Green Color piece to create the Stand-up Helper card. Refer to the photo.

Step 10: Assemble card – Adhere the white Stitched Oval to the Green Dotted Scallop Oval.  Adhere the strawberries,  leaves and one bee to the white oval. Adhere the main Oval panel to the lower half of the front of the card. Use 3D tape to add dimension to the small strawberry.  Add Bead Strings accents. Add the second bee as explained in step 9.

I hope you enjoy this project and have a wonderful Sunday!

Jacky.

“Summer” mini-album

Elizabeth Craft Designs Suzanne Cannon Summer Graphic 45 mini album summer Mother Goose Kathy Jo Wood

Happy first week of Summer to my Northern Hemisphere crafty friends! Summer is easily my favorite season and it always seems that the time flies by. This year I decided to create a little mini album to capture some of the happy summer memories.  The album is the first album I have created and it was so much fun…I know I will make more! Perhaps some of my family and friends will see a mini album in their future.  (big smile!)

The mini album was not designed by me (I found the instructions on Pinterest) so I will provide a link to the album instruction at the end of this post. However, I can share photos of my take on the album…and I have many to share…so let’s start!

The front of the album with Suzanne Cannon’s lovely Summer die and bright and cheerful Graphic 45 papers:

The back of the album has Celebrate (because I think every summer day is a celebration of season):

The mini album is accordion style…so neat!

The album contains panels for photos or journaling.

Following the cheerful theme I used the “happy” die on the front inside panel:

“Remember” definitely had to be used on this wee album…

…as did “Memories” (so pretty!!)

The heart is elegant and happy (had to be added!)…

…and “Dream” (one of my favorite dies!) will be used with a photo of my sweet puppy sleeping…

Fun in the Sun

June 19, 2015

ECD Sun Candy Spiegel5Hi, it’s Candy Spiegel here for my last post (with the exception of the Designer’s Challenge at month end) for Elizabeth Craft Designs. I have loved working with this company and I will definitely miss it.

I decided to create a bit of summer fun in this adorable stand-up card. Here’s how …

ECD Sun Candy Spiegel

1. Cut white cardstock and Transparent Double Sided Tape to 4″ x 5-3/8″. Adhere the cardstock to one side of the adhesive. Pull off the release sheet and place it upside down in front of you. Place peel off stickers sticky side up on the release sheet as shown above. Pick up the cardstock with the adhesive attached and place it sticky side down on top of the stickers. Turn over. Remove the release sheet again and coat the entire surface with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Shake off the excess and polish.

2. Do this again with a smaller piece of cardstock and Transparent Double Sided Tape for the flowers inside the glasses.

3. Color with alcohol markers.

4. Use the Outdoor Edges die to cut a wave pattern at the top and bottom of the glittered cardstock as shown. Add dashes around the edges with a black marker. Cut yellow cardstock 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″. Cut stripe paper 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″. Adhere stripe paper to cardstock and glittered cardstock to striped paper.

5. Fussy cut small flowers. Adhere on flip flops with dimensional foam adhesive. Add Turquoise Glitter Dots to ball, glasses, flowers and the corners as shown below.

6. Cut yellow cardstock 4-1/4″ x 11″. Score at 2-3/4″, 5-1/2″ and 8-1/4″. Place Stand Up Helper on the 2-3/4″ line and run through die-cutting machine. Color the Stand Up Helper orange. Fold the card on the 5-1/2″ and 8-1/4″ score lines. Place adhesive between the 8-1/4″ score line and the end of the cardstock and adhere cardstock with peel off stickers on it. Tuck it in the “sun” Stand Up Helper.

7. Cut pattern paper 4-1/8″ x 2-1/2″ and adhere to bottom of the card. Apply Transparent Double Sided Tape to the back of Orange Shimmer Sheetz and another piece to the back of black cardstock. Cut out the letters Fun in the Sun from both the cardstock and Shimmer Sheetz. Adhere the black letters to the card base. Then, adhere the Shimmer Sheetz letters slightly to the right to create a shadow effect.

8. Cut around the leftover pieces of the sun on the sheet of peel offs. Pull off the outside of the sticker and throw away. Cut a piece of Transfer Sheet slightly larger than the sun. Peel off the sheet and place it on top of the sticker. Rub with your finger or a bone folder and carefully lift off. Place on the paper and rub again. Put the Transfer Sheet back on the release sheet and save to use again.
