Stamped ‘Printed’ Paper

February 25, 2021

Hey Friends! It’s EK, and I have a little secret to confess. I don’t buy much printed paper or cardstock. I know…gasp. The truth is when I do buy printed paper, I tend to hoard it and never use it for fear of wasting it. So, to prevent the build up of unused paper, I simply don’t buy it. But that leaves a lot of my crafting projects pretty bland. So I simply stamp my printed papers, and then I always get what I want. And frankly I have found that designer Ilse and Charlene’s stamps are perfect for my stamped ‘printed’ paper.

Step One: Pick two pieces of coordinating cardstock and die cut it with the Stitched Indented Rectangle die set so it can be layered. I went ahead and die cut the centers out of my base pieces so that I didn’t waste good paper.

Step Two: On the largest base piece, blend ink over the paper using the Story Telling stencil. I used Tea Dye Distress Oxide because it was only a shade darker than the paper and would be subtle.

Step Three: On the smaller base piece, I hand stamped floral and fauna from the Spring Fling stamp set. I used both Abandoned Coral and Crushed Olive Distress Oxide to create this print.

Step Four: Adhere the two layers together using 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive. Adhere the base layers to an A2 card frame.

Step Five: On the large focal panel, hand stamp images from both the Spring Fling stamp set and the Words & Layers stamp set. Again I used Abandoned Coral and Crushed Olive Distress Oxide to coordinate the ‘paper’ with the layer below.

Step Six: On the smallest die cut panel, pull out the Story Telling stencil again and the original ink color and blend the ink through the cut outs.

Step Seven: Adhere the two smaller die cuts to the larger two with 6mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive forming the layers of the card.

Step Eight: To finish the card, stamp an image from the Poppy Dream stamp set onto some watercolor paper. I used Tea Dyed Distress Oxide.

Step Nine: Using some coordinating water-soluble ink, watercolor in the poppy. I used both Abandoned Coral and Crushed Olive Distress Oxide.

Step Ten: Fussy cut out the image and adhere it to the card frame using a liquid adhesive.

Step Eleven: Using a stamping platform, stamp the sentiment onto the card from the Words & Layers stamp set. I used Walnut Stain Distress Ink and adore how the letting of the sentiment matches the style of the stencil.

Step Twelve: Finish the card by adding Transparent Crystal Craft Drops to both the flower petals and the sentiment. Let Dry.

And just check out how gorgeous the floral image becomes with the Craft Drops on it. It turns out stunning!

So what do you think? Do you like my hand stamped ‘printed’ paper? Let me know in the comments below.

Until then, happy crafting.

Masculine Valentine

January 14, 2021

Hey everyone, it’s EK and today I am starting my quest to finish my vantines for those that I love. So one of the things I think the most difficult is crafting something for teenage boys. I can create for my husband with ease, and my daughters in a snap of the finger…but my teenage son, well that is a whole different story. Today I thought I would tackle a valentine for my son using Joset’s Peek-A-Boo Love Set dies to help me.

Step One: Die cut the door flap from the Peek-A-Boo Love Set die set onto an A2 card frame so the flap opens on the right.

Step Two: Using ink, blend the edges of the card frame. I used Pumice Stone Distress Oxide.

Step Three: Using yupo paper and alcohol inks, create a background. I went with blue tones trying to avoid the stereotypical valentine colors and create a more masculine feel.

Step Four: Trim the yupo paper, and add some 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive to the back of the paper and adhere it inside the card frame.

Step Five: Add both 10mm and 6mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive to the top inside boarder of the card frame and seal the card shut.

Step Six: Using two different inks, stamp a sentiment onto the flap from the Bear Hugs stamp set. I used Brick Red Distress Oxide for the ‘XOXO’ and Chipped Sapphire Distress Oxide for the ‘Hugs & Kisses’.

Step Seven: Die cut accessories from the Peek-A-Boo Love Set die set out of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock and color them. I used copics.

Step Eight: Using liquid adhesive adhere the key to the front of the flap. I used Kids Choice Glue.

Step Nine: Adhere the other accessory pieces inside the card.

Step Ten: Stamp a sentiment inside the card from the Bear Hugs stamp set. I used StazOn ink over the alcohol ink.

Step Eleven: Finally spray the face of the card with a shimmer spray to give it a little flair.

I’m not certain this is quite masculine enough to keep my kid from rolling his eyes, but he will think the flap is pretty cool. He likes when my cards function in a none traditional way.

Holiday Thank you Cards

December 26, 2020

Christmas may be over, but that doesn’t mean the need for a few more holiday thank you cards is done. Today I have whipped up four holiday thank notes for family members who thought of us this year.

Step One: Using Elizabeth Craft Designs Watercolor Palette, lay down a layer of color onto some watercolor paper. Each color spot has two or three different colors to create the spot.

Step Two: Die cut the color spots using both A Way With Words Flourished Christmas Minis and Flourished Christmas Minis 2.

Step Three: Using 90lb Soft Finished Cardstock, die cut A Way With Words Family four times.

Step Four: Trim a piece of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock to 4.25×5.5 inches to create four backgrounds of the cards. Blend Distress Oxides around the edges using the darkest on the outside and going lighter to the the middle. I used Black Soot, Chipped Sapphire and Speckled Egg.

Step Five: Repeat four each of the four backgrounds.

Step Six: Spray and splatter the cardstock with a silver shimmer spray.

Step Seven: Die cut the four background pieces with the Stitched Rounded Rectangle die set.

Step Eight: Using 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive, adhere the background to an A2 card frame.

Step Nine: Using a stamping platform, add the sentiments to the four card frames. I used both the Love & Hearts Collection stamp set and the Build Your Own Sentiments 1 stamp set.

Step Ten: Using Kids Choice Glue, adhere both the Family die cut and Minis to the four card frames.

Step Eleven: Add little heart flourishes from the Love & Hearts Collection stamp set to the four cards.

Step Twelve: Add Metallic Silver Craft drops to the four cards.

I love how each of these cards came out, looking a lot like winter with just a touch of the lingering holidays.

Do you Send Holiday thank you cards? What do you put as the focus image on them? Let us know in the comments below. Until then, happy crafting.

Joyful Wishes

December 14, 2020

Hey Friends! It’s EK, and today I am playing around with the newly released Holiday Elf- Hers and seeing if I can play with her in ways beyond just the holidays. After all, there are a bunch more elves than just holiday elves. I thought I would play around and see if I could make her into a convincing woodland elf and with the help of the Mushroom House Folding Card I think I was able to come up pretty convincingly with that.

Step One: Die cut all the pieces (minus the elf’s hat) of the Holiday Elf- Hers die set and the stocking cap and trim from the Winter Accessories die set out of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock.

Step Two: Using colored pencils, color the skin and hair of the elf. I used my Polychromos pencils.

Step Three: Color the elf’s clothing and stocking cap (from the Winter Accessories diet set) dark brown with colored pencils.

Step Four: Color the rest of the elf’s clothing a mid toned gray.

Step Five: Using Kids Choice Glue assemble the elf.

Step Six: Die cut the pieces of the Mushroom House Folding Card and some of the accessories out of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock.

Step Seven: Using Distress Oxides color the mushroom card frame. I used a combination of Pumice Stone, Victorian Velvet and Frayed Burlap.

Step Eight: Using Distress Oxides color the natural elements. I used Rustic Wilderness for the grass, Wild Honey and Victorian Velvet for the flowers, and a combination of Hickory Smoke, Victorian Velvet and Frayed Burlap.

Step Nine: Using Kids Choice Glue, assemble the card. Using Joyful Wishes stamp set add a sentiment to the card.

How else do you think you could use the Holiday Elves all season long? Let us know in the comments below. Until then, Happy Crafting.

Be Brave, Be Yourself

May 23, 2020

IMG_0073Hey Friends!  It’s EK, and today I am make some unique graduation cards for a very unique time.  Right now nothing feels or looks normal, so crafting a few high school graduation cards in the traditional way seemed inappropriate.  So I thought, it might be fun to create a unique look for these graduates who are learning to grow up too fast.  I found that designer Suzanne’s A Way With Words Be Brave Bold Yourself die set was perfect for the look for which I was aiming.

IMG_0058Step One:  Blend some water soluble ink over Watercolor Paper trimmed to 4.25×5.5 inches.  I used Distress Oxides in Victorian Velvet, Dusty Concord, and Frayed Burlap in an ombre corner to corner blend.

IMG_0059Step Two:  Spray the Watercolor Paper with watercolor spray.  I used Distress Oxide in Tattered Rose.

IMG_0060Step Three:  Let the ink spray dry.  I just love how this turned out and find the look a little romantic.

IMG_0061Step Four:  Die cut the inked paper with the Stitched Indented Rectangle die set.

IMG_0062Step Five:  Die cut the graduation sentiment from the inked paper with the Be Brave Bold Yourself die set.  I choose to use the sentiment ‘Be Brave, Be Yourself’.  The really cool thing about die cutting the way I have, is that you can make two separate cards from this one die cut. You can use the negative inked paper and the die cut works to create two unique cards.

IMG_0063Step Six:  Using 6mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive, adhere the inked cardstock to a piece of Lavender Soft Finish Cardstock trimmed to 4.25×5.5 inches.

IMG_0064Step Seven:  Set the die cut sentiment back into the open spaces, and adhere the negative die cut pieces back into the open places using some Kids Choice Glue.

IMG_0065Step Eight:  Adhere the the lavender cardstock to an A2 card frame using 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive.  To finish the first card, add a few drop of Transparent Crystal Craft Drops.

IMG_0070Here is the finished look of the first card using the negative pieces of the die cut from the Be Brave Bold Yourself  die set.

IMG_0066Step Nine:  To create the second card, die cut a second trimmed piece of Lavender Soft Finish Cardstock with the Stitched Indented Rectangle die set.  Adhere the Be Brave Bold Yourself die set die cut piece onto the cardstock using Kids Choice Glue.

IMG_0067Step Ten:  Add some heart stamping from Susanne’s A Way With Words Love & Hearts Collection stamp set using some pale purple ink.  I used Distress Oxide ink in Victorian Velvet.

IMG_0068Step Eleven:  Adhere the cardstock to an A2 card frame for the finished look.

IMG_0072I just adore how these two cards came out and think they will be a fun card for these special 2020 graduates.  Are you creating cards for graduates this year?  Are you creating a traditional looking card or are you creating a unique one to symbolize the uniqueness of these times?  Let us know in the comments below. Until then, happy crafting.

Cardmaking Charlene Stamps Silk Microfine Glitter Soft Finish Cardstock

Perfect

March 15, 2020

Hey Everyone! It’s EK, and today I am pulling out some old crafting techniques with ECD’s newest designer, Charlene’s stamp sets. Sometimes the best way to showcase something new is by pulling out something old, and seeing exactly how far you can push the technique. I am just loving how Charlene’s Journaling Elements stamp set adds perfectly to this old school smooching Distress technique.

Step One: Smooch several colors of water soluble ink onto a slick surface. I am using Distress Oxides in Pine Needles, Evergreen Bough, and Broken China.

Step Two: Spray the smooched ink with lots of water.

Step Three: Press paper into the wet ink. I used both a trimmed piece of 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock and a piece of Watercolor Paper. Let paper dry.

Step Four: Place stamp from the Journaling Elements stamp set onto an acrylic block. Spray the stamp with clean water and press the stamp onto the inked paper. Repeat several times over the surface of the paper.

What you get is a really cool ghost effect from the stamped image inside the ink.

I am loving the visual look when the stamped water fully dries on the cardstock. It works similarly on both the 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock and Watercolor paper.

Step Five: To finish the project, place a second stamp on an acrylic block. Ink up the stamp and spray it with some clean water. Stamp the image onto the inked cardstock.

I used Evergreen Bough with the heart stamp from the Journaling Elements stamp set.

Step Six: For more visual interest, stamp a floral image onto some 90lb Soft Finish Cardstock using water soluble ink. I used a leaf image from the Garden Flowers stamp set and Distress Oxide in Pine Needles.

Step Seven: Watercolor in the image using coordinating ink. I filled in the leaves with Distress Oxide Evergreen Bough. Fussy cut out the image.

Step Eight: Mount the inked cardstock onto an A2 card frame using some 10mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive.

Step Nine: Add a strip of trimmed Clear Double Sided Adhesive from a sheet onto the cards. I used two strips on the watercolor paper card to fill in the gaps of where the card fell short, and just one on the card.

Step Ten: Peel off the protective paper and add some Silk Microfine Glitter to the adhesive. I used a combination of teal Silk Microfine Glitter from the Earth Glitter Palette.

Step Eleven: Stamp a sentiment onto the card from the Journaling Elements stamp set. I stamped the word with water soluble ink that had been sprayed by water, then stamped it in a traditional way again when the water stamp dried. I used Pine Needles Distress Oxide for the sentiment.

I just adore how not ‘perfect’ the whole card turned out. Its imperfections really create the ‘perfect’ card.

Step Twelve: Finally, adhere the fussy cut floral onto the card frame using Kids Choice Glue.

The fussy cut image really does a wonderful job of grounding the whole project.

I adore how the water marked stamp images in the background are really not noticeable, but still greatly add to the whole project.

Let us know in the comments below what your favorite old school technique is to use when creating with new products. Until then, Happy Crafting.

Creating Paper Orchids That Look Real

February 14, 2019

Good morning and Happy Valentine’s Day! Kathy Sabarese here, sharing a 6”x 6” card featuring beautiful Orchids.

Orchids are so lovely and could be a thoughtful gift for Valentine’s Day! So, I’ve put them in a setting for a card for a ‘loved‘ one. I’ve used Susan Tierny Cockburn’s Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid), Garden Fruit Crate, Stitched Circles, Ladybug, Soft Finish Card Stock, Words: ‘Little Words Mean A Lot’,  and Kid’s Choice Glue. If you’d like to see how to shape the flowers, you can watch Susan’s video here.

I’ve added some smudges and lines with a gold pen on the background, and Spanish Moss under the leaves in the crate so it shows through the slats. The background inside the circle was done with Ranger’s Oxide Distress Inks stamped on a Teflon mat, a few spritzes of water and then card stock was ‘dragged’ through. Watch the wonderful colors spread!

I shaded the edges of the leaves, then pushed them into a Versamark pad, sprinkled them with fine clear embossing powder, heat dried them.. and voila.. shiny leaves orchids exhibit!

These orchids are honestly very easy to sculpt into real-looking flowers! I thought some words would add to this card and stamped these on a tag.

Don’t forget to add a ladybug to one of the leaves!

Susan has tutorial videos of her flowers from which you will gain wonderful tips and techniques –– watch on her Facebook page, ‘Susan’s Garden Spot.’

Try becoming a ‘paper gardener’ .. I think you will be so pleased!

See you soon!

Kathy

Die Cut Cards with Distress Oxide Backgrounds

August 17, 2017

Hello everybody, it´s Sanna here and it´s my turn to post a tutorial for the Die Cut Design Team today. If you know me, you know that I love color. I have been going up and down ever since the Distress Oxides arrived and told myself I don´t really need more inks. Well, eventually I gave in and got myself a set of six colors. Needless to say, I totally fell in love with the inks and I am afraid I am going to need a few more colors soon. The inks work so nicely with the Soft Finish Cardstock, too. (Am I finding excuses to buy a few more colors? Yes, I am…)  Continue Reading
