Sweet Friend by Diana Nguyen

Hello, sweet readers!  Diana here again to share a clean and simple card that is perfect for any occasion.  The front is a simple greeting to a sweet friend – inside you could write Happy Birthday, Hello, Thank you, or just a note of friendship.  Read on to see how I made this card.  Though clean in design, a lot of interest is added by use of a veritable rainbow of colors, along with gold and some sparkly rhinestones.

Pocket Cards with Shimmer Sheetz Lining

Pocket Cards with Shimmer Sheetz Lining By Judi Kauffman

by Judi Kauffman

I love making pocket cards. They’re easy, but impressive, the kind of card that announces ‘you’re worth the effort’! This time I designed a trio, working in an assembly-line fashion – all die cutting first, then all assembly. Using the same color palette throughout made it easy to coordinate all of the elements: bright yellow cardstock for the lacy portion of the pocket, a mix of red, burgundy, teal, and orange cardstock for the rest of the layers and some of the die cuts, Shimmer Sheetz for everything else.

Celebration and Award Ribbons

Celebration and Award Ribbons by Judi

By Judi Kauffman

Our dog was a champion before she retired and came to live with us. Her ribbons were fabulous – a pleated rosette around a big padded circle with gold printing at the top, long tails cascading below. They serve as an inspiration for today’s project: Ribbons to make for friends to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion or give as an award to someone who has triumphed over illness or adversity.

I chose Live, Laugh, and Love – A Way With Words dies that are longtime favorites. ‘Live’ goes to the friend who is five-years cancer-free. ‘Laugh’ goes to the friend who brings smiles no matter what is going on. ‘Love’ goes to my husband.

But you don’t have to choose the same dies or sentiments! It’s very easy to customize this project.

Decide what you want to say and size the circles and fishtail ribbons accordingly. Suzanne Cannon’s A Way With Words collection offers so many options.

Embossed Shimmer Sheetz Easter Eggs

Embossed Shimmer Sheetz Easter Eggs
by Judi Kauffman

Each year I make sparkly embossed Shimmer Sheetz Easter Eggs for my friends. It’s always a mix of hanging ornaments and cards, sometimes a two-fer card with a removable ornament on the front. I enjoy choosing the embossing folders and have a great time adding embellishments like Glitter Dots peel-offs.

This time I incorporated some of the new ModaScrap dies. I trimmed away portions of the Dandelion Fluff to create the feel of grass or nests as well as to make an egg stand! Dancing Butterflies and portions of the Lace Pocket made their way into some of the cards, too.

I usually try to limit my cards to only one or two dies but I went all-out this time, incorporating Stitched and Postage Stamp Rectangles as well as the aforementioned. The eggs are hand cut. I wanted chubby, bottom-heavy 3.5” eggs, larger than the Elizabeth Craft Designs egg die, so I drew my own pattern. (It’s a very simple shape – you won’t have any trouble drawing an egg, I promise!)

Sending Love

April 1, 2017

 by Judi Kauffman

A big thank you to Suzanne Cannon for inviting me to be today’s guest designer. My project: A card that sends love.

Experienced card makers – head straight to the supply list. You’ll be able to create your own version of the card by looking at the photos, I think.

Beginners – I’m going to put on my ‘teacher’ hat for a moment and explain how the layout works. I call it ‘Double Triangle.’ (It’s among the Foolproof Layouts in my book, By the Batch: Creative Cards, Postcards, Envelopes & More – but this isn’t a plug because the book is out of print.)

Notice that the Entwined Oval has three small dots as part of the die. That is the first triangle. The dots pull in your eye and bring the focus to the words. The second triangle is formed by the three hydrangea heads at the edges of the card front. This trio acts as a frame, and it, too, keeps the eye moving. The triangles are dynamic, not static, and the words are at an angle – not straight across. Together, the angle of the words and the pair of triangles keeps things visually exciting…lots of movement.

Also notice that there are two rectangles, one paler and one darker. The darkest colors are at the bottom of the card base to anchor the card, much like ground and sky. But the top rectangle is pale, over all, and the darker areas are at the upper left and lower right, leaving the center area very pale and at the same angle as the words.

Controlling the watercolor-effect background pieces in this way is intentional, not accidental – that’s why I’m pointing it out…so you can make similar design decisions on your own projects!

Okay…Teacher hat is put away in the closet…

Shimmer Sheetz-Lined Elegant Roses Gatefold – Merci!

Shimmer Sheetz-Lined Elegant Roses Gatefold – Merci!

By Judi Kauffman

This project was inspired by a jacket I saw on one of the singers at the Grammy awards show in February. It was kimono-like with elaborate embroidery and exaggerated sleeves that moved and sparkled.

I lined both sides of my Elegant Roses Gatefold card with lightly sanded Turquoise Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz to give the look of the sleeves and used soft sheer organza ribbon to echo the flowing quality of the rest of the garment.

The removable card reveals its secrets when the ‘jacket’ is untied: Leafy branches on the outside, another branch and a sentiment on the inside. I chose ‘Merci’ this time, but will switch to other sentiments and color combinations for sending birthday and anniversary wishes!

Calendar Makeover

Calendar Makeover by Judi Kauffman

My friends love knowing that I will turn their old calendars into something brand new! It’s a January ritual that extends throughout the year. Here it is March and I’m still having fun slicing and dicing the pages…

I cut some of the pages and fold them into envelopes. I cut other pages into small pieces for layering onto card fronts and gift tags! If the paper is heavy enough, I’ll even die cut some sentiments.

When I’m done, I give some of the cards and envelope to the friends who donated the calendars! I get to have the fun of repurposing would have otherwise gone into the recycling bin, they get to enjoy the calendar again in its second incarnation.

More Love
by Judi Kauffman

Though Valentine’s Day is in the rear view mirror, I kept going with cards that use the ‘love’ die from the Baby Love set. I’m getting ahead for weddings and anniversaries. And I needed a special box for a pair of earrings I’m giving to a friend.

I’m nowhere close to done with that ‘love’ die. I’ve yet to use it with the word ‘Baby’! And I’m still happily choosing patterned papers and cutting leaves and flowers to make more of the Pitcher Cards…

Instead of specific instructions for each project, I’m going to provide some tips, design strategies, and a supply list so you can duplicate the cards as shown.

I hope you’ll use the ideas as a jumping-off point for cards with a similar feel in a totally different color palette or a different size. After all, no two people have the same stash of patterned papers, not everyone likes mixing together as many patterns as I do.

Gracias – Pocket Card

February 12, 2017

Gracias – Pocket Card
by Judi Kauffman

It wasn’t an easy choice: Should my first pocket card using a die from the new ModaScrap collection be the Leaf Pocket, the Lace Pocket, or the Rose Pocket??? The Leaf Pocket won.

I knew I wanted to create a flat thank you note to tuck into the pocket, and that gave me another decision to make: Should I say it in French, German, Spanish, or English? After a couple of coin tosses ‘Gracias’ won.

For me, there was only one decision that was made the minute I saw all three pocket dies: I knew I would use Shimmer Sheetz to line the pockets! It adds a nice touch of sparkle as well as concealing what is inside. And it hides the tabs that hold the pocket in place, too. Otherwise they’d be visible when the insert card is removed. What can I say? I’m the granddaughter of a tailor and we always lined pockets…

This won’t be my only Shimmer Sheetz-lined pocket card, that’s for sure.

They’re fast and fun to make and there are so many options: Switch to the Rose or Lace Pocket, change the color combination, choose a different sentiment. Embellish the insert card with die cut flowers (flat or dimensional!), other leaves, feathers, or whatever you prefer. Instead of a flat insert card, tuck in a tag or a folded card, or even a handwritten letter on pretty paper.

Customize, customize; play and experiment. This card will work for so many occasions!
