Summery Sand Castle Pop-Up Card

Hi, it’s Elena today. Is it just me or are the days flying by this summer? Christmas card making time is creeping up on me, but I wanted to take a moment to celebrate summer before it’s over with a pop-up card featuring the Sand Castle die set from Joset van de Burgt. The set is so cute, and believe it or not this pop-up card is easy to put together and doesn’t take that long to make. Here’s how I created it:

Summery Sand Castle Pop-Up Card Front

Step 1 – Using the Sand Castle Die Set, die cut the larger sand castle pieces out of sand-colored cardstock, the two sand castle trim detail dies out of 85 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock that has been covered with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet – adhesive side up, the pail out of the striped paper in the Sailor’s Life 12 x 12 Paper Pack, the pail handle out of Pewter Soft Finish Cardstock, and the shovel from red cardstock. Freehand cut a sand bank that is 5 ½” W x about 2” H at its peak out of sand-colored cardstock. Die cut the waves die from the Adventure Edges Die Set out of turquoise cardstock at least 5 ½” W x 1” H. Trim small pieces of Rust Soft Finish Cardstock to fit behind the window openings in the Sand Castle pieces (Photo A).

Add shading to the outer edges of the larger sand castle die pieces by blending Vintage Photo Distress Ink on to all the sides with a blending tool. Do the same for the top and bottom edges of the sand bank and randomly over the Rust pieces. Use the same technique to add shading to the top edge of the waves die cut with Salty Ocean Distress Ink. Adhere the Rust pieces behind the Sand Castle window openings with liquid glue pen.

Use a medium gray alcohol marker to add shading to the edges of the pail (more along one side), under the top lip (line embossed when die cut) and the inside top of the pail (oval embossed when die cut) as well as the inside of the shovel (shape embossed when die cut) and along one side of the shovel and finally, to the bottom edge of the pail handle. If desired, darken the outer edges of the shading with a slightly darker gray marker (Photo B).

One at a time, peel the adhesive backing off of half of each detail trim piece for the sand castle and cover with Sand Dunes glitter from the Beach Glitter Palette. Peel the rest of the backing sheet off and cover the rest of each detail trim piece with glitter. Tap off any excess glitter and rub each piece with your finger to bring out the shine (trim pieces without glitter can be seen in Photo A; with glitter in Step 4 photo).

Step 2 – Cut a piece of 100 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock to 5 ½” x 8 ½”; score and fold in half to create a card base. Cut a piece of light blue cardstock to 5 ½” x 6 ¾” and score at the 4 ¼” mark on the longer side to create a piece that is 5 ½” x 4 ¼” with a flap folding over the back. Using the 2 stair step die in the General Pop-Ups Die Set, line up the nubs on the edges of the die with the score line in the inside of the card base, about in the center, and die cut out (Photo A).

Use your fingers to push the now die cut pop-up steps into the center of the card as you fold the card base to train the two pop-up steps to fold correctly inward when the card is closed. Add 10 mm and 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front of the card base, being careful not to add adhesive over the pop-up openings and to the top 1 ½” of the back of the card base, also not covering the pop-up openings. Remove the adhesive backing off of the tape on the top back of the card base and holding the card base upright, line up the light blue cardstock piece with the front of the card base and fold it at its score line to adhere it to the back of the card base, covering the pop-up openings from the back. Then remove the backing from the adhesive on the front of the card base and press the light blue cardstock down on to the front.

Use liquid glue pen to adhere the pail handle onto the front of the striped pail die cut. Eyeball the placement of the pail and shovel on the right side of the sand bank and mark the line where they sit lightly with a pencil. Use a craft knife to cut the marked slits into the front of the sand bank and add shading over the slits with the same medium gray alcohol marker from Step 1.

Add 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive to the back of the pail and adhere in place on the sand bank tucking the bottom of the pail into its slit. Do the same with the shovel using a liquid glue pen. Add adhesive tape to the back of the sand bank and adhere on to the lower edge of the card front (Photo B).

Step 3 – Add a thick stripe of liquid glue to the top edge of the turquoise waves die cut and cover with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Once dry, tap off any excess glitter and rub with your finger to bring out the shine (NOTE: I did the glitter on the waves later in the video, but you are better off doing it now; shown on completed card). Adhere the wave piece to the lower edge of the card front, overlapping the sand bank by about 5/8” and trim off any excess that falls below the edge of the card base. Stamp “Life is a Beach” from the Beach Sentiments Clear Stamps into the upper left of the sky on the card front using black ink. Add three periods after the sentiment and several seagulls into the sky using a thin black pen. The front is done!

Step 4 – Using liquid glue pen, adhere the glittered detail trim pieces on to the larger sand castle pieces. Using the lower step on the pop-up mechanism on the inside of the card as a measure, mark off how much to trim off from the bottom of the single tall tower die cut for the sand castle and then trim it shorter. Add a small piece of 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the front face only of the upper step on the pop-up mechanism and press the trimmed tower piece on to it, centering it in place horizontally and making sure it is slightly above the fold line so it can fold down when the card is closed.

Add 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the shorter sand castle die cut and adhere on to the front of the largest sand castle piece. Add 6 mm tape to the front face only of the lower step on the pop-up mechanism, remove the backing and adhere the larger now-combined sand castle piece on to it, centering it below the tall tower on the upper step horizontally and clearing the fold line. If desired, draw a shadow line just below the castle on the card base with the medium gray alcohol marker.

Step 5 – Stamp the sun from the Beach Sentiments Clear Stamps into the upper left above the castle on the inside of the card using black ink. Stamp the “Soak Up The Sun” sentiment from the same stamp set on to a piece of 85 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock using black ink and die cut out using the second smallest circle in the Stitched Circles Die Set. Die cut a piece of yellow cardstock using the third smallest die in the Dotted Scallop Circles Die Set and layer behind the sentiment circle with 6 mm adhesive tape. Adhere the layered greeting circle below the castle on the inside of the card using 6 mm tape. Color the stamped sun with a coordinating yellow alcohol marker. Press Tumbled Glass Distress Ink on to a craft mat and add water with a large flat brush. Scribble the watered down ink on to the upper inside of the card base behind the castle and avoiding the sun with the flat brush to create a sky effect.

Set aside to dry and then enjoy!
