Fun In The Sun Shaker Card

Hello! It’s Elena today with a Fun in the Sun Shaker Card. I was able to capture (I hope) the essence of summer with a bright color palette of turquoise, yellow, orange, red and white along with great stamped images from the Sun & Surf clear stamp set. Although it is a “happy summer” card, you could easily adapt it as a birthday card, especially for a teen or a guy who likes to surf.

Here’s how I made the card:

Fun In The Sun Shaker Card

Step 1 – Using waterproof black ink onto watercolor marker-friendly white cardstock, stamp one each of the surf boards, one sun, and three waves using the Sun & Surf Clear Stamp set. Stamp the greeting “Happy Summer” from the Beach Sentiments Clear Stamp set. Color with watercolor markers in shades of red, orange, yellow and turquoise as shown below. Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers were used for this card. Roughly trim around the stamped images, back with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet, and die cut with the matching die set. See photo with Step 2. (Optional: Fussy cut by hand.)Fun In The Sun Shaker Card - Step 1

Step 2 – Create an A2 card base: Cut a piece of 100 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock to 5 ½” x 8 ½”; score and fold in half. Trim a piece of sky blue cardstock to 4 ¼” x 5 ½” and adhere to the front of the card base with 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Cut a piece of orange cardstock to 5 ½” x 4 ½” and die cut it into a frame using the second largest die in the Garden Notes Frame It/Stitched Rectangles die set. (Match blue and orange cardstock to markers used for coloring.) Add 3 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the frame. Cut a piece of clear acetate to 4 ¼” x 5 ½”. Trim the greeting down to a 1 7/8” x 7/8” rectangle, centering the greeting in the middle. Trim a piece of Kraft brown cardstock to 5 ½” x 2 ½” and add Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet to the back of it. Create a sand bank by cutting a gentle hill shape across one of the long sides. Use three shades of brown/dark metallic markers to add dots to the sand bank for dimension and a more realistic look.

Step 3 – Peel the backing off the 3 mm tape on the back of the orange frame and adhere the acetate to it. Peel the backing off the adhesive sheet on the back of the sand bank and adhere it across the lower half of the sky blue cardstock on the card front. Arrange the three surfboards on the sand bank and use a light brown watercolor marker to add shading below them on the sand. Adhere the surfboards over/above the shading.

Add a red border to the greeting rectangle with a red marker that matches the red marker used for coloring. Peel the backing off of the adhesive sheet on the back of the stamped and die cut waves and adhere, overlapping slightly, across the bottom of the sand bank making sure they show when the frame is placed over the card front.

Step 4 – If desired, dip a soft brush into some baby powder, picking up a small amount and brush the soft brush along of the edges of the surfboards, waves and sand bank to take away the stickiness anywhere the adhesive sheet could stick to the sequins that will be inside the shaker element. Add 2 layers of foam tape to the back of the frame, making sure all four sides meet up at the corners so no sequins can escape or get caught. Use the baby powder and brush on all of the inside edges of the tape and both sides of the acetate to remove any stickiness and static. NOTE: If you use too much baby powder you can wipe it out of the frame and acetate with a slightly damp cloth – let dry. Place a pile of turquoise, yellow, orange and red metallic sequins carefully on the card front. Remove the backing from the back of the frame and adhere down to the front of the card base, over the sequins to create the shaker window. Adhere the sun and greeting to the front of the acetate with 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Shake the card and enjoy!
