A Way With Words

Planner Books

Planning a wedding or other big event? Need to keep track of invitations sent and RSVPs received, the menu and other aspects of the special event? Give some inexpensive composition books a facelift and you can do it in style!

To customize the books for use as a journal instead of a planner, incorporate the word ‘Courage’ or ‘Memories’ or ‘Faith’ or ‘Make a Wish’ instead. And ‘Special Day’ remains a good choice for journals as well as planner books. Suzanne Cannon’s A Way With Words collection has so many wonderful options.

Come join me –

Instructions:

Step 1 – Adhere interesting paper to the front and back cover of each composition book. (Shown: Raised dot patterns and Asian themes)

Step 2 – Hand cut and/or die cut coordinating papers in simple shapes. (Shapes shown were cut with Dashing Rectangles, Dashing Squares, Dashing Circles, and Stitched Hearts die sets as well as with craft knife and ruler on a self-healing mat.) Incorporate speckled cardstock, or if you love a lot of sparkle mix in Shimmer Sheetz or cardstock that has been topped with leftovers from sheets of Transparent/Gold or Transparent/Silver Glitter Dots before die cutting. (The heart is Light Pink Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz, lightly sanded after die cutting – Reminder: A Metal Adaptor Plate or Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate is required for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz.)

Step 3 – Die cut RSVP, Special Day, Save the Date, Menu, or whatever word(s) suit the planner theme from Velvet Adhesive Sheets. Also die cut other decorative elements like leaves or a wreath. Use three-quarter inch strips of patterned paper to create faux Washi tape.

Step 4 – Arrange and adhere the pieces, layering as shown or as you prefer.

Step 5 – If composition books aren’t to your taste or aren’t the right size, use a different kind of book in the preferred size and pick another kind of binding. Make your own or do some shopping! (Tip: If I know I want to pull out pages after tasks are completed I use spiral-bound books.)

Timesaving tip and some more ideas: While you’re at it, die cut whatever pieces you might need for making Save the Date and RSVP cards, anniversary or birthday cards that say Special Day, or Menu cards for party tables. (The die set that has the words Special and Day also includes the word Delivery, so you can die cut Special Delivery and whip up cards to welcome new babies!)

I hope this tutorial sparks all sorts of ideas. Have fun!
