Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Flower Power

April 1, 2018

Judi Kauffman

For today’s tutorial I’m skipping the April showers and heading straight to the May flowers. Shimmer Sheetz flowers, that is… Though I’ve planted them on bright and happy cards, these blooms are waterproof so you could pop them onto a potted plant, string them as a garland to hang at an outdoor party, or with a few minor tweaks use them to decorate napkin rings, tennis shoes or flip flops, hair bows and all sorts of accessories and other projects!

Step 1 – Use the project photos for inspiration. Start with any size side- or top-fold card base. Shown: 4.25” x 6.25” (Dark pink with scant white border) and 3.75” x 5.5” (Light yellow embossed cardstock).

Step 2 – Die cut a bunch of small and large Shimmer Sheetz flowers in colors shown or of choice. (Shown: Yellow, Purple, Pink, Light Pink Iridescent) Also cut Berry Branch in Velvet Adhesive Sheet (Light Green) or Trio of Leaves curved sprig in origami paper (backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet prior to cutting) or Shimmer Sheetz (Spring Peridot Gemstone).

Reminder: A metal adaptor plate or Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate is REQUIRED for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you are new to this technique – The cutting side of the die faces the metal plate with the Shimmer Sheetz in the middle, and these are inside the usual plate ‘sandwich’ for cutting.

Step 3 – Add a piece of embossed and sanded Shimmer Sheetz to the card front (a strip or a rectangle). Layer with a vertical strip of glittered ribbon tape topped with narrow satin ribbon.

Step 4 -Arrange and adhere the branch, leaves and flowers as shown or in other pleasing arrangements. Use small snippets of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs (formerly called Power Tabs) to hold the Shimmer Sheetz flowers and leaves – the branch already has adhesive on the back. If flowers extend past the edge of the card trim as needed.

Note: Some of the flowers are flat (Yellow Iridescent with red centers), the rest have their petals bent upward; some flowers are a double layer (Daisies on same card as yellow flowers). Mix things up!

Step 5 – Add an adhesive-backed half-pearl or gem to the center of each flower. If cards will be mailed rather than delivered in person, use the flattest gems possible for flower centers or substitute Glitter Dots peel-offs. Alternatively, mail in a padded envelope. Lumpy embellishments add to the cost of postage and can be damaged in transit.

Step 6 – Use the Shimmer Sheetz flowers and leaves for other projects. For example:

Clothing and accessories – Pierce a small hole in the center of the flowers and use beads to sew them onto projects. Alternatively, use a strong-hold gem glue like Jacquard 3D Paint & Adhesive or Beacon GemTac Glue. Do not use a glue gun.

Decorative items like plant picks, table decorations or garlands: Use Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs or wire to connect or attach the flowers and leaves.
