A Way With Words Shimmer Sheetz

Butterfly Joy

I’m here today for Suzanne Cannon’s A Way With Words Design Team with a tutorial that combines some of my favorite things: Suzanne’s dies, hanging ornaments, butterflies, and Shimmer Sheetz! (I can never have too much sparkle or too many butterflies…) And I mixed in dies from the Dashing Squares and Dashing Circles sets and corners from ModaScrap’s Victorian Gentleman set to show how well all collections from Elizabeth Craft Designs work together.

I picked a rich, deep, subtle color palette, but Shimmer Sheetz offers many other options for switching the combination to suit your taste and the occasion! Go with bright hues or soft pastels or stay totally tone-on-tone by using only ONE color.

Step 1 – Choose Shimmer Sheetz in 3 colors – one for the background circle, one for the corners and center square, and one for the butterfly flourishes. (Shown: Amethyst Gemstone, Fire Opal Gemstone, and Ruby Gemstone)

Reminder: A metal adaptor plate or Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate is REQUIRED for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you are new to this technique. The cutting side of the die will face the metal plate with the SS face up – between the die and the metal plate – inside the machine’s usual cutting ‘sandwich’.

Step 2 – Alter a 2.25” x 2.5” piece of Fire Opal Gemstone with Gold Metallic Mixatives and Alcohol Inks in colors that compliment the Shimmer Sheetz. (Use an ink applicator tool and go for a mottled effect.) Back the ink-altered SS with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape and die cut the word ‘Joy’ (or another word of choice that is roughly the same size).

Step 3 – Cut two 5” squares from Shimmer Sheetz in the color selected for the circle (Shown: Amethyst Gemstone). Adhere the pieces with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet. Die cut the 5” Dashing Circle. Pierce or punch a sixteenth-inch hole close to the edge. Keep this hole at the top (like 12:00 on a clock face) to help position the elements when assembling the finished project.

Step 4 – From the second color (Shown: Fire Opal Gemstone) die cut two Victorian Gentleman corner pieces and one of the Dashing Squares – 1.75” x 1.75”.

Step 5 – From the third color (Shown: Ruby Gemstone) die cut two small Butterfly Flourishes and two butterflies. Gently bend the butterfly wings upward.

Step 6 – Gently and lightly sand all of the die cut pieces except for ‘Joy’ and the two large butterflies. Those need to remain shiny and mottled (the word) and super sparkly (the butterflies)!

Step 7 – For this step: Use small snippets of Tombow Xtreme Adhesive Tabs to adhere all pieces unless instructed otherwise. Use non-stick scissors to cut the Tabs. Refer to the photos for placement; adhere the die cut pieces to the circle (keeping the hole at the top) in this order:

*Victorian Gentleman corners (think of them as wide ‘V’ shapes and make sure that the point of the V is at the top on one piece and the bottom for the other – or at 12:00 and 6:00 if you think of the circle as a clock face.

*Small Butterfly Flourishes at 3:00 and 9:00, overlapping the Victorian Gentleman corners. (Adhere with small snippets of foam tape.)

*Square in center, set so it looks like a diamond. (Adhere with foam tape.)

*The word ‘Joy’ onto the center square. (This piece was die cut with adhesive tape on the back.)

*Butterflies, top one angled to the left, bottom one angled to the right.

Step 8 – Add a metallic braid hanging loop. Optional (shown): Include a glass bead between two knots at the top of the loop, unravel the braid above the topmost knot to create the look of a tassel. (Skip the bead if mailing the ornament in a standard envelope!)
