Shimmer Sheetz

Shimmer Sheetz Sunday: Five-Minute Bookmarks

March 4, 2018

By Judi Kauffman

I haven’t yet converted to eBooks and probably won’t. I love the heft of a good novel, I enjoy turning actual paper pages and when it’s time for a break, tucking in a bookmark. I use bookmarks in my cookbooks to keep track of favorite recipes. I include them whenever I give a book as a gift. And, as you have probably guessed, I LOVE making them!

Shimmer Sheetz is an excellent starting point for bookmarks. It’s sturdy, lightweight and durable, and it looks downright elegant.

Care to join me? Cut Shimmer Sheetz into strips of varying lengths and widths. (Samples shown measure 4” to 8.5” in length and 1.5” x 2” in width.) Choose some embossing folders and a few stickers and let the fun begin.

Here’s how it works:

  1. For the easiest bookmarks ever, simply emboss and lightly sand a strip of Shimmer Sheetz. Wipe with a damp paper towel. DONE! I dubbed this tutorial Five-Minute Bookmarks, but these take only a minute or two.

  1. Spend a tad more time and emboss with more than one folder. Wipe with a damp paper towel. Add some colorful stickers or adhesive-backed glittery ribbon.

Up the ante to ten minutes or so. Instead of embossing, lightly sand a strip of Metallic Gold Shimmer Sheetz. Add long gold border stickers (shown: Ribbon Radar); accent with Glitter Dots peel-offs (shown: Gold/Silver and Violet/Silver).

I am with you Judi, I love books I can turn the pages on! Most of my books are reference/travel/picture books but multiple bookmarks are wonderful for those. I listen to audiobooks because I drive quite a lot so I get two things done at once and am able to use my limited free time to craft. Thank you for sharing your beautiful bookmarks and instructions.

My pleasure, Nancy. I do like multiple bookmarks in a reference book or to mark a page where there are particularly interesting lines I want to remember in a novel. Though my oldest cookbooks tend to automatically fall open to the most-used pages, I still mark them with a bookmark.

How lovely! These would look so pretty in a book!

Thanks, Jean. They are kind of like giving a book a piece of jewelry to wear. My favorites are the gold ones with the borders along the sides and all of the little Glitter Dots! They remind me of a pattern on a beautiful Indian sari.

Question: may I ask which embossing folder you used for the second photos with the stripes/cross-hatch and stars design? Thank you.

Beth, Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I do exactly what you mentioned…I carry bookmarks with me and give them out and I also leave a stack at the library whenever I’ve got extras (which is most of the time!). And I make them for school teachers to give out.
As to your question about embossing folders: I used a wobbly striped folder for the stripes (can’t find it right now, but there are many striped folders available) and I turned it in the opposite direction to give me the checkerboard pattern at the bottom of the light blue bookmark. I used two different star folders for the top part. When there are stars OVER stripes it’s because I double-embossed that section. For the light blue one, the stars are de-bossed. When there are stars in rows it was a border folder that I embossed, then turned the bookmark over and de-bossed, then turned it back and embossed again. There are tons of star folders out there and mine have been collected over the course of a decade, so I’m not sure if the ones I used are current or not. That said, the outline stars are Kaisercraft, the row of stars is an Alterations border from Tim Holtz. All sanding ws done after the embossing/de-bossing. Since the core of Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz is white, that’s what you see on the stars and stripes bookmarks. The core of Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz is silver so that’s what you see on the purple and green bookmark (Amethyst and Spring Peridot SS).
If you start with a 5″ x 12″ piece of Shimmer Sheetz and cut it in half to 5″ x 6″, then you can cut each half into 3 or 4 bookmark strips, depending on how wide you want them to be. You can also cut a ‘Sampler Pack’ piece measuring 4″ x 5″ in half for two 2″ x 5″ bookmarks. (That’s the size of the pale blue one.)

Wow, thank you for your generous-hearted response! I kinda sorta figured you embossed with two folders for a couple of the bookmarks, but hadn’t yet analyzed the em-de-bossing. : ) I have Shimmer Sheetz and embossing folders, so am ready. My mojo had left the building due to a health issue for my husband, but your bookmarks just brought it back, being simple yet rock-star cool. So thank you for helping with the mental health/feed-the-soul aspect of crafting. And your name is so familiar – do you teach/blog for The Queen’s Ink? If so, I’m in Reston and have visited them for a few classes. Thanks again.

You made my day! I can’t think of a higher compliment than to be told that my tutorial brought your mojo out of hiding. Small world, Beth! Yes, I do teach and blog for The Queen’s Ink and am a ‘local’. We should plan a time to meet at the store if your husband’s situation doesn’t require you to be home all the time. If that sounds like fun, please call The Queen’s Ink and leave me a message with your email address or phone number so I can be in touch. (As you know, names and email addresses of those who leave comments are kept private by Elizabeth Craft Designs.) I can call the store to let them know they’ll be getting a message to forward to me…

So you made my day! We’re still in reeling and wait mode, and will know more soon, but my husband is back to work and I can get away, though being in Reston timing in between rush hours or weekends is the goal (plus I have a cat who needs special feedings). I’ll call the store and leave my info. BTW, my favorite class was Terry’s little Gelli print index card book, not that I’ve taken many classes. Thank you!

I almost didn’t open the email with this blog because I’m a huge e-book reader, although I cherish our *many* books, including ones from my childhood. But my eyes aren’t so good anymore, and changing fonts and contrast in e-readers allows me to read for hours. But am I glad I did open this blog. These are the most beautiful bookmarks ever! The turquoise and purple ones made me swoon, and they’re all amazing. I’ll have to make a bunch and carry some with me to give out randomly. (“Do you read regular books? Yes? Then here you go.”) Thank you, thank you.
