Colorful Watercolor Crystals Valentine

Colorful Watercolor Crystal Valentine

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us and normally we think of reds, pinks and whites for this holiday. But being a color person, I decided to go in a completely different direction and create a super colorful card for a bit of an artsy twist on a Valentine. Here’s how I made the card:

Colorful Watercolor Crystal Valentine

Step 1 – Stamp the Circles Background Clear Stamp on to watercolor paper using a permanent black ink. Sprinkle the image one at a time with red, yellow, green and violet watercolor powders, spraying with water as you go. Be careful not to blend red directly with green or violet with yellow as this will create mud. Blot the water off as needed with paper towels. Add additional sprinkles of powder, spray with water and blot until you are happy with the colorful background. Set aside to dry.

Step 2 – Stamp the bee stamp from the Patchwork Clear Stamps onto alcohol marker-friendly white cardstock and color with shades of yellow, red, gray and black. I used Spectrum Noir markers. If desired, add dimension to the bee’s eyes, antennae, and the line of thread in the button with a black or clear Glaze pen. Die cut with the matching die (not pictured).

Step 3 – Cut the ‘Be Mine’ sentiment from the Love Sentiment Clear Stamps into two separate words. Stamp ‘Be’ on to a piece of 85 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock in red ink. Mask off the stamped ‘Be’ and stamp a second E next to the first one in the stamped word by stamping the B portion of ‘Be’ on to the mask and the E on to the cardstock. Now stamp the ‘Mine’ portion of the sentiment next to the ‘Bee’ in red ink. Die cut out using the smallest die in the Banners die set (refer to the photo in Step 4 for the die cut sentiment). NOTE: If you do not wish to cut apart the stamp, mask carefully when inking to get the same effect.Colorful Watercolor Crystal Valentine - Step 3

Step 4 – Cut a piece of 100 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock to 4 ¾” x 9 ½” and fold in half to create a 4 ¾” square card top- or side-fold card base. Die cut the background piece from Step 1 using the second largest die in the Dotted Scallop Squares die set. Die cut the second smallest heart from the Stitched Hearts die set from Dark Fuchsia Soft Finish Cardstock. Fussy cut a roughly 1/8” heart shadow layer around the Dark Fuchsia heart out of 85 lb. White Soft Finish Cardstock. Using a white paint pen, add white dots to the background panel as shown.

Step 5 – Assemble the card by adding 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the watercolor panel and adhere to the front center of the white card base. Adhere the Dark Fuchsia heart on top of the white shadow layer using 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Using 10 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, adhere the layered heart on the watercolor panel in the lower right as shown. Add 6 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the banner sentiment and 3 mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the bee’s body and left wing. Adhere the bee on to the end of the banner sentiment, covering the fishtail end with the wing. Then, adhere the entire sentiment and bee across the heart as shown. Add additional white dots with the paint pen if desired. Finally, use clear glue to adhere 3 small yellow buttons to three circles in the background panel, creating a casual triangle that frames the bee. Refer to the photo below for exact placement.
