Butterfly Aperture

January 28, 2018

Hi Everyone!  Marilyn here and I am excited to have been asked to join the design team at Elizabeth Craft Designs.

Today is my day to post my project on the blog and for my project I decided to make a card using the Butterfly Aperture die and the Love Sentiments stamp set.  The Butterfly Aperture is a two piece die which includes the outline plus the inner cut outs.

Step 1 – To create the butterfly, use the solid/outline die from the Butterfly Aperture die set to cut watercolor paper. To color the wings, use watercolor toward the center of the butterfly and gradually add yellow ochre to lighten the wings toward the edges. Paint the body and antennae section with Payne’s gray.

Step 2 – Die cut the overlay section of the butterfly from black cardstock. Remove all of the small bits from the openings.

  • Apply VersaMark ink to the entire surface of the black die cut. Mix together some gold embossing powder with chunky white embossing powder and while the VersaMark ink is still wet, sprinkle this mixture over the surface.
  • Heat set the embossing powder

Step 3 –  For dimension, glue the body and antennae section of the embossed overlay onto the watercolor painted silhouette (solid) butterfly. Bend the wings upward. Now glue the painted butterfly to the card front the same way – body and antennae only. Bend the wings upward for this piece, too. Refer to the photo below:

Step 4 – Add a sentiment toward the lower right. Heat emboss with gold powder. (stamp from the Love Sentiments Clear Stamp set.)

Step 5 – Before attaching the white cardstock to the black card base with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, randomly sprinkle some gold embossing powder around the butterfly and then  heat it from the bottom in order to avoid the powder from blowing off the card.

  • When finished, glue the white card onto the black top-fold card base.  The Butterfly Aperture is a large die that makes a statement!  The finished card measures 6″x6″ and as you can see, the butterfly covers almost the entire card front.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
