Haunted Witch’s Hat – Home Decor

October 9, 2017

Hello friends, it’s Sandy here today with a fun project that I hope you will enjoy.  We all love using our dies to make cards, scrapbook pages, mixed media projects and layouts, but another way to make those crafting items go further is, of course, home decor.  Halloween will be here before we know it but there is still plenty of time to add just one more decoration.  Let’s scare up some fun!

Let’s get started –

  1. Paint a paper mache hat with black paint. (Party and craft stores stock them this time of year).  I was lucky enough to find some cute little battery operated lights that are pumpkins and piles of skulls.  I glued the little lights on the brim of the hat and ran the wires through a hole that was made before adding the hat band.  They are so cute when lit up.

2.  Make a buckle for the hat band from Grunge Board or chipboard. Paint with gold ink or paint, distress with black ink.  Use the shape shown below for the buckle.

3.  Scrunch up some wire edged ribbon and run through the buckle and around the hat then glue in place.

4.  From the Halloween Scenery die ste – cut 2 trees, cut trees where shown above and slide together.  This will make the tree stand up.  Glue tree to another decoration or make a crease on the bottom and then glue to hat brim.

5.  From the Haunted House die set, cut 2 haunted houses.  The houses need to be taller for this project so when cutting out the houses, place the cutting pad above the end of the die and stop cutting before you come to the end of the die, then roll it back out of the machine.  Cut small pieces of yellow or orange for the windows.  Place window where needed on one house and then place second house on the back leaving an unglued section at the end so the flap can folded back and be glued to the hat brim making the house stand up.

6.  Using the Halloween Scenery die set and the Adventure Edges die set, cut several graveyards and stripes of grass leaving an extra 1/2″ at the bottom.  Crease at the 1/2″ mark and then cut small wedges so it can be folded back and glued to the hat brim making it stand up.

For my project I cut the graveyard pieces from gray cardstock, colored in grass, shaded the tops of the headstones and then cut them apart so they could be scattered around the hat brim.

7.  Using the Iron Fence, cut 4 times.  Make the 2 outside sections shorter by cutting off at the bottom.  Glue 4 sections together and fold 1/2″ at the bottom.  Glue on hat brim (see below)

8.  When all glue is dry, use black paint or black marker to cover any raw edges on the grass, gravestones and fence.

9.  Using the Fitted Circles die set, cut a moon,  add a witch from the Haunted House die set and some bats from the Halloween Scenery die set.  Place them on hat pins or on the Tim Holtz Memo Pins and stick in hat.  Don’t forget the creepy spider from the Halloween Scenery set hanging from the tree.

10.  Using the Pumpkins die set, add some leaves in the fall colors.

Happy Haunting,

Sandy
