Happy Birthday Masculine Card

September 26, 2017

Hi Everyone. It’s Tina here today for the Die Cut Team. My dear husband’s birthday is coming up and if you are like me, you struggle when it comes to creating masculine cards. I love adding flowers and girly accents to my cards which don’t translate well for a man. I found the trick to making masculine cards is to stick to earth tones. Below you will find the steps to replicate this card.

  • Step 1 – Cut Kraft brown cardstock 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″. Score and fold in half to form a vertical side-fold card base. Finished size:  4 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ (A2)
  • Step 2 – Create a background (you can skip this step and use patterned paper). Trim White Soft Finish Cardstock to 4″ x 5 1/4″ and using a bone folder or scoring board create lengthwise lines, parallel to the 5 1/4″ edge of the rectangle spaced at 1/2″ intervals. Score again in the opposite direction, randomly spaced to create additional lines. Now with an ink pad (I used Distress Inks in 3 colors) apply the ink directly to the paper. This will create the look of wood paneling or flooring. Once finished, adhere to the front of the card with the long lines running vertically, using 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive.
  • Step 3 – Diecut Fitted Fishtail with Vellum Paper. I used the mid sized die to create a pocket for the tag. Adhere using 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive. Insert a purchased chipboard tag into the pocket or die cut your own tag with a Tags & More die set.
  • Step 4 – Diecut Tags & More 4 Flourish 2 times with Patterned Paper. Distress the edges with Ink. Add string through the hole of tag to both. Adhere one tag at the bottom towards the left side with 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive. Before adhering second tag trim the sides to create a smaller tag and adhere to card on top of large tag. See photo below for visual placement.
  • Step 5 – Diecut Pair of Leaves 2 and Entwined Hearts (smallest Die with the heart and three hearts inside with White Soft Finish Cardstock. To create faux metal embellishments: Add Embossing Ink directly on top of the die cuts and while the ink is wet add Embossing Powder Bronze to the top. Use the heat tool and watch the magic happen! Repeat this step 2-3 times, depending on how thick you want the embellishment to be. (No more than a total of 3 times for White Soft Finish Cardstock.)
  • Step 6 – Adhere the two leaves and largest heart faux metallic embellishments toward the left side of the card using Kids Choice Glue. (Tip: use a toothpick to dab glue onto the back in a few spots – very little is needed.) See photo below for placement.
  • Step 7 – Die cut Stitched Fishtail Banner from two patterned paper, one small and one the next size up. Using 3mm Clear Double Sided Adhesive, adhere larger die cut to the right side of the card, overlapping the vellum pocket.
  • Step 8 – Add two faux metal hearts to the banner using Kids Choice Glue.
  • Step 9 – Use Embossing Ink to stamp sentiment from Clear Stamps General Sentiments on the small banner. Add white embossing powder and heat with Heat Tool. Adhere to the bottom right, overlapping the large tag.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and will use the steps to create a Masculine Card with DIY Background as well as your own Faux Metallic Embellishments. Of course this card can be used for any occasion by changing the sentiment, changing the patterned paper and the embellishments. (For example: instead of creating the faux metallic hearts, die cut flowers and change the color of embossing powder.) The possibilities are endless.

This is gorgeous! I have a question- what is soft finish cardstock? I have seen references to white soft finish on several blogposts and wondered what was different about it versus regular white cardstock? Thanks for letting me know.
