Sending Love

April 1, 2017

 by Judi Kauffman

A big thank you to Suzanne Cannon for inviting me to be today’s guest designer. My project: A card that sends love.

Experienced card makers – head straight to the supply list. You’ll be able to create your own version of the card by looking at the photos, I think.

Beginners – I’m going to put on my ‘teacher’ hat for a moment and explain how the layout works. I call it ‘Double Triangle.’ (It’s among the Foolproof Layouts in my book, By the Batch: Creative Cards, Postcards, Envelopes & More – but this isn’t a plug because the book is out of print.)

Notice that the Entwined Oval has three small dots as part of the die. That is the first triangle. The dots pull in your eye and bring the focus to the words. The second triangle is formed by the three hydrangea heads at the edges of the card front. This trio acts as a frame, and it, too, keeps the eye moving. The triangles are dynamic, not static, and the words are at an angle – not straight across. Together, the angle of the words and the pair of triangles keeps things visually exciting…lots of movement.

Also notice that there are two rectangles, one paler and one darker. The darkest colors are at the bottom of the card base to anchor the card, much like ground and sky. But the top rectangle is pale, over all, and the darker areas are at the upper left and lower right, leaving the center area very pale and at the same angle as the words.

Controlling the watercolor-effect background pieces in this way is intentional, not accidental – that’s why I’m pointing it out…so you can make similar design decisions on your own projects!

Okay…Teacher hat is put away in the closet…

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Choose a color palette and make sure that the Shimmer Sheetz selected for the words coordinates with the cardstock used for the Entwined Circles as well as the patterned papers and markers that will be used to color the hydrangeas.
  2. Review Els van de Burgt’s YouTube tutorial if you have not die cut Shimmer Sheetz. A Metal Adaptor Plate or the Sizzix Big Shot with Precision Base Plate is REQUIRED for cutting Shimmer Sheetz.
  3. Die cut the words ‘Sending’ and ‘love’ from Shimmer Sheetz. (Shown: Light Pink Iridescent). Lightly sand to tone down some of the shine.
  4. Die cut the smaller Entwined Ovals from cardstock that coordinates with the Shimmer Sheetz words. (Shown: Pink)
  5. Place 2 hydrangea peel-offs onto smooth white cardstock, one with the stems and one without. Color with markers. Fussy cut the heads. Option: Instead of using outline peel-offs (as shown) make dimensional hydrangeas using Susan’s Garden Club Hydrangea dies! It’ll be a show-stopper!
  6. Make an A2 top-fold card base out of watercolor-effect cardstock. Folded size, 4.25” high x 5.5” wide. Option: Create your own background with stamps, stencils or paint.
  7. Cut a 3.25” x 4.25” rectangle from lighter watercolor-effect cardstock. Mat with solid color cardstock that is as dark as the darkest color in the card base. Adhere to the card front.
  8. Using tiny snippets of Power Adhesive Tabs, adhere the entwined ovals and words.
  9. Using Foam Tabs for dimension, adhere the hydrangea heads at the bottom right and upper left. Trim at the edges of the card front. Adhere the leftover piece from the hydrangea at the upper left to the upper right side of the card. Adhere the leftover leaf from the hydrangea at the bottom right to accent the hydrangea at the upper left. If you chose to make dimensional hydrangeas with Susan’s Garden dies, position and trim them in a similar fashion or allow them to extend past the card front.
