Hello Everyone. It is Christine from Susan Tierney-Cockburn’s Design Team with another card tutorial. Today is a Christmas card made using a new release from the Susan’s Garden Notes series – Mistletoe. My card is a 6 X 6 gate-fold. Here is how I did it.
- Cut 1 mistletoe branch and several extra leaves from medium green cardstock. Using a darker green ink, shade branch and leaves to give them some depth. (Peeled Paint Distress Ink used here.) Lay branch and extra leaves on leaf pad and with leaf tool from Susan’s Tool Kit give leaves a stem line down the center. Using tweezers at bottom of each leaf, pinch leaf upward at the crease. Lay leaf branch and leaves face down on molding mat. Using the medium ball tool, roll along tips of leaves to give each one a little more dimension. Susan has a video on this found HERE.
- Cut berries 2-3 times from off-white cardstock (2 pieces needed for each berry). Lay pieces on hard rubber mat and using the small ball tool from tool kit, cup each piece by pressing ball into center.
- Using the largest die from Els van de Burgt Studio Dotted Scallop Ovals set, cut 2 ovals from white cardstock. Ink edges on both ovals (Vintage Photo Distress Ink used here). Set 1 aside for inside of card.
- From Red Metallic or Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz cut 1 oval using largest die from Els van de Burgt Studio Beaded Oval Frames. Use small pieces of Clear Double Sided Adhesive to attache the frame to the white scalloped oval. (Alternatively, back the Shimmer Sheetz with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet before die cutting). Reminder: You must use a metal adaptor plate in your machine’s standard cutting plate ‘sandwich’ when die cutting Shimmer Sheetz (or a Sizzix Big Shot machine with Precision Base Plate). Review the tutorial HERE if you are new to this technique.
- Attach mistletoe to center of oval using clear quick drying glue. (Add glue to stem areas and a few leaves – do not glue all leaves down.) Add extra leaves as desired. Attach berries (see video for how to make berries). Dab glue on berries and leaves then sprinkle with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Let dry.
- Cut 2 bows from Red Metallic or Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz and adhere the two with small pieces of Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, offsetting slightly. Use more Tape to adhere the bow to the top of mistletoe stems.
- Cut white cardstock 6″ by 12″; score at 3″ and again at 9″. Fold on score lines so side panels meet in the middle, forming your gate-fold card base. Ink all edges. (Vintage Photo Distress Ink used here.)
- Cut 2 pieces of green cardstock 2-3/4″ X 5-3/4″ and ink edges. Using Clear Double Sided Adhesive attach to front of card.
- Cut 2 pieces of patterned paper 2-1/2″ X 5-1/2″ and 1 piece 5-3/4″ square. Ink all edges.
- Attach 2 smaller pieces of print paper to green cardstock on front of card using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape. Attach the 5-3/4″ square piece to center of inside of card.
- Attach oval with mistletoe to front of card with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape, attaching only to left side of flap.
- Attach second oval to inside of card in center of patterned paper.
- Attach Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet to a piece of white cardstock, making sure it is large enough to fit the A Way With Words ‘Merry Christmas’ die. To ensure that the adhesive will be on the FRONT of the words, make sure that the side with adhesive is against the cutting side of the die when cutting. Remove the release sheet to expose the adhesive on the front of the words, and while working over a tray with coffee filter inside, cover the words with True Red Silk Micro Fine Glitter. Brush off excess onto the filter and form a funnel by folding the filter to return excess to the jar. Polish the glitter with a fingertip to bring out maximum sparkle. Using quick drying glue attach the glittered Merry Christmas to the oval on inside of card. (See Els’s video if you’re new to glittering.)
- Die cut a card stand/easel from cardstock of your choice.

I love it. I don’t have the mistletoe die but can see that I need to get it. Thanks for the great tutorial.
