Judi Loves Berries: A Strawberry Tutorial

April 3, 2016

By Judi Kauffman

Hello, all! It’s Judi Kauffman, back as today’s Guest Designer. I love strawberries, so imagine my glee when I saw the Joset Designs Strawberries die set. It’s irresistible, just like the berries that will soon arrive at the farmers’ markets and make their way to our kitchens. With ice cream, starring in shortcake, chocolate-dipped, sprinkled with powdered sugar, or straight out of the box – this is a fruit that defines summer and happiness!

When it comes to cards, strawberries are a lot of fun, too.

As you can see from the photo above and the two that follow, I’ve dubbed the cards a ‘Strawberry Tutorial’ because there are three very different kinds of berries:

First, a realistic palette – Red cardstock for the chocolate-dipped berries (the shiny dip is Bronze Metallic Shimmer Sheetz).

Second, a realistic palette with lots of sparkle – Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz with bright, Emerald Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz leaves and calyxes (the cap and stem piece).

Third, a quirky color combo (my favorite!) – Deep, rich, less realistic Ruby Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz berries with Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz leaves and ‘caps’.

Below is how the three cards look together, a good way to compare and choose a direction. Or leap in and make all three!

Here’s the how-to:

  1. Create one or more card bases as explained below, using Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape to secure the layers.

a. Card with cup and saucer – Pale Peach Soft Finish Cardstock, 4.5” x 6.25” top-fold base, with Through the Lens Wood Series patterned cardstock rectangle measuring 4.25” x 6”, centered on front; top with Dusky Sky Soft Finish Cardstock rectangle measuring 3” x 5.5”, centered left to right and a quarter-inch up from bottom of Wood Series rectangle.

b. Square card – Pale Peach Soft Finish Cardstock, 5.25” x 5.25” top-fold base, with 5” x 5” Pink Peach square, centered on front. Top with side by side vertical rectangles – left side 2” x 3” cut from Through the Lens Stone Series patterned cardstock, right side 2.35” x 3” cut from Dusky Sky Soft Finish Cardstock; equal space for border at left, right, and bottom.

c. Vertical card – Pale Peach Soft Finish Cardstock, 4.75” x 6.25” left side-fold base, with 4.5” x 6” Pink Peach rectangle, centered on front. Top with 4” x 5.5” rectangle cut from Through the Lens Stone Series patterned cardstock, centered, and a 3” x 4” rectangle cut from Dusky Sky Soft Finish Cardstock centered left to right, 1” from bottom edge.

  1. Die cut berries, leaves, calyx/stem pieces (berry ‘caps’), cup and saucer as explained below.

Remember – A Metal Adaptor Plate is required for cutting Shimmer Sheetz (Review Els van de Burgt’s video if you are new to this technique).

a. Card with cup and saucer – Die cut 3- and 4-inch-long Fitted Ovals from Pale Peach Soft Finish Cardstock, ‘Live’ and berry overlays from Ladybug Red Soft Finish Cardstock backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet, berry silhouettes from Buttercream, calyx/stem pieces from Green Velvet Adhesive sheet. Die cut chocolate coating for berries from Bronze Metallic Shimmer Sheetz. Lightly edge cup and saucer pieces with Sailboat Blue ink, applied with a mini ink blending tool.

b. Square card – Die cut ‘Live’ from Ruby Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet; berry overlays from Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz backed with Adhesive Sheet, berry silhouettes from Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz, leaves from Emerald Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz, berry caps from Emerald Gemstone backed with Adhesive Sheet.

c. Vertical card – Die cut ‘Live from Yellow Velvet Adhesive Sheet, Berry overlays from Ruby Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Sheet, berry silhouettes from Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz, berry caps from Fire Opal Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz backed with Adhesive Sheet, and leaves from Fire Opal Shimmer Sheetz.

  1. Assemble the layers for each berry (silhouette topped with overlay, then ‘cap’ and, if using, the chocolate coating).
  2. Assemble the card fronts. Add the word ‘Live’ to the cup and trim at the sides. Add the word ‘Live’ at the upper left of the square card and the bottom right of the vertical card, trimming just a bit as shown. Use one or more layers of foam tape or foam dots to add dimension beneath the berries, leaves, and cup, but not the saucer. Accent each card with a trio of 3mm light green faceted gems.
