Shimmer Sheetz CONFETTI Cards & Earrings

January 17, 2016

Hello, Everyone – It’s Judi Kauffman, back as today’s guest designer with some projects that I hope you’ll find interesting and fun to make: Shimmer Sheetz CONFETTI Cards & Earrings!

Just like the calendars I’ve posted for the December Designers’ Challenge and here on the Elizabeth Craft Designs blog on December 3, these projects incorporate the leftover bits that fall out of the Ribbons 1 dies (the negative shapes that are all too often tossed into the trash). As you can see from the cards, shown in the photo above, I also used the ribbon strips. For the earrings, shown in photos below, I used only the small pieces, pieces I have used before as ‘faux staples’ and have now given a second name: CONFETTI!

CARDS:

Because no two people will have the same collection of papers and embellishments, use my cards as a source of inspiration to jump start your own creations. Instead of a step-by-step, here’s the basic design strategy:

Decide what size card you want to make and create a collage sized to fit the front. Use die cut Shimmer Sheetz shapes (circles, squares, ovals, rectangles), ribbon strips, and the ‘CONFETTI’ (all die cuts backed with Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape before cutting) mixed with randomly torn and cut pieces of paper in a color scheme and theme of your choosing.

Embellish with charms, coins, buttons, feathers or other low-relief elements. Glue the collage to the front of a contrasting card base. I chose to mix in lightly sanded Red Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz circles cut with the smallest dotted edge circle in the Stitched Circles die set, one of the Corners 1 dies cut rom Gold Metallic Shimmer Sheetz altered with black StazOn. I picked the circle because it repeats the shape of the Asian coins. A side note: Shimmer Sheetz is difficult to photograph, but the Red Iridescent color is an almost exact match for the red in the calligraphy-filled Asian paper.

The close-ups below give you a sense of how I incorporated the CONFETTI.

EARRINGS:

Shimmer Sheetz jewelry is impressive, very easy to make, super lightweight. It’s a great gift and so much fun to wear. (I sometimes tuck extra pairs of earrings into my purse so I can surprise people who compliment what I’m wearing!)

All 3 pairs of earrings are die cut from a double layer of Shimmer Sheetz, Elizabeth Craft Designs thin Clear Double Sided Adhesive Tape between the layers. The top layer was randomly dappled with alcohol inks before cutting, creating a textured-looking base that contrasts well with the CONFETTI.

Tip: If you don’t wear big, bold earrings, instead of Fitted or Stitched Circles or Squares use Els van de Burgt Studio Jewelry die sets to make more petite versions.

In addition to post-style earrings like the two pairs shown at the start of this blog post, you can also create dangling earrings like the ones in the photo below. Punch a 1/16” hole a scant 1/8” from the top of the shape for the earring wire.

Thank you so much! I had such a good time using those little leftover bits. CONFETTI is my new favorite thing. Not sure why I keep spelling it in all caps, maybe to express my enthusiasm…
