Elizabeth Craft Designs May Designer’s Challenge – Background Dies

May 31, 2015

Our truly wonderful design team came up with many neat projects as we challenged them with creating designs out of the new Spring Release background dies. Take a look below to see what they did!!

Raquel Mason created this lovely card featuring the Circles die and Koi & Flowers peel-offs. The gold-outlined, glittery Koi & Flowers are so striking against the embossed background. The Circles can be used for so many projects and this one shows off the Circles like bubbles in a pond and just gives the feel of water. Raquel used Silk Microfine Glitter, gold peel-off Borders and the Gingko embossing folder for more dimension and detail. See the full tutorial at Raquel’s blog HERE.Raquel

Frances Byrne went all HAY-wire on us (pun intended) with this adorable Brownie the Cow walking along the path to the barn – how cute!! She did a great job in shading the Pebbles to look real. The Pebbles die is so versatile in that you can use it for creating walkways or rock walls or, yes, even…… jewelry! The new Pop It Ups dies from Karen Burniston were used in conjuction with Els’ new Pebbles dies to create this great farmtime card. Check out Frances’ blog HERE for instructions.

Straight out of the Wizard of Oz, Debra Hensley created this yellow brick road card from the Bricks die. Her imagination was running wild using the feet from Jackie’s Dolls peel-offs and glittering them to look like Dorothy’s red shoes. Follow your heart……..literally and figuratively………using the Alphabet 1 – Caps die and die-cut heart from the Spiral Circle Pull Card. Find out how to make this card HERE on Debra’s blog.

With another water theme, Candy Spiegel makes you feel like you’re out on the high seas. Her use of the new Maritime peel-offs against the wavy pattern paper and Shimmer Sheetz really sets the mood for this gorgeous card. Texture paste on a Pebbles die stencil gives this card dimension and a “wow” factor. Instructions can be found at Candy’s blog HERE.CandyWe have Marsha Valk’s Project Life creation using the new Spring Release Pebbles, Circles & Leafy Branch dies as well as Tags & More 5 – Sunburst, Alphabet 1 – Caps and Numbers & More 1 dies. Marsha has included the Baby peel-offs on mini-canvases from her last blog post and incorporated Shimmer Sheetz into these fun but simple scrapbook spreads. Visit Marsha’s blog HERE to find out how to make this project yourself!

Our fabulous guest designer, Jackeline Rojas, is showing off a Happy Birthday tri-fold card using all three new dies – Circles, Bricks and Pebbles. The hinges hold together the tags made from the Tags & More 7 – Vine die to create a versatile card in which any sentiment can be used. Jacky used Alphabet 1 – Caps to die cut Happy Birthday but you can die cut anything with this Alphabet! Look at Whiskers the Cat surrounded by his favorite dishes – mice and fish! They are all included in the Whiskers die set. To make this project, full instructions can be found at Jacky’s blog HERE.

Angela Beavers used the Bricks and the Bunch of Flowers 4 dies to decorate this fun photo album. She cut the bricks twice to create the two colored brick wall. Love how she kept the colors simple, yellow, black and white but of course you can use any color combination. She added dimension to the flowers by cutting multiples and adhered them together. Find more inspiration on Angela’s blog HERE.

Yesterday we sneak peeked these beautiful earrings created by Judi Kauffman using the Circles die and Shimmer Sheetz. This project is so fun and easy! Simple cut two circles pieces from any color Shimmer Sheetz and add them to the earring wires. Fore more detail you can add beads or cut a second set of circles. Judi also created a card that matches the earring beautiful. For more info and instructions, visit our blog post from yesterday HERE.

As you can see, there are many variations for the ECD dies. We hope this will encourage you to come up with additional ideas for scrapbooking, cards, decorations and more!

Shimmer Sheetz Circles – Earrings and Card

May 30, 2015

Tomorrow it’s time for another Elizabeth Craft Designs Challenge and this month we challenged our designers to create a project using one of the new Circles, Bricks or Pebbles dies. Today we like to sneak peek two projects for this month’s challenge created by our talented guest designer Judi Kauffman.

MayChallenge-1

MayChallenge-A

Thank you for inviting me to be a guest designer for this month’s challenge. I knew I wanted to use the new “Circles” die, but I couldn’t decide whether to make a pair of earrings or a card so I made BOTH!

“Circles” is one of those endlessly versatile dies that I know will be in constant use for a long, long time.

MayChallenge-2

Instructions for the earrings:

  1. Die cut two Circles pieces from Shimmer Sheetz in your favorite color. (Reminder: Use the Metal Adaptor Plate for die cutting Shimmer Sheetz. Review this VIDEO tutorial if you have not done this technique before.
  1. Sand the die cut Shimmer Sheetz if you want to tone down the sparkle. The earrings shown have been lightly sanded to reveal the silver core color in the Amethyst Gemstone Shimmer Sheetz. Iridescent colors have a white core, Gemstone colors have a silver core, Metallic colors have a transparent core. Optional: Instead of sanding the die cut Shimmer Sheetz, alter it with alcohol inks or run it through an embossing folder with a small all-over pattern.
  1. Gently bend the die cut Shimmer Sheetz to form a teardrop-style loop. For earrings that measure approximately 3.5” add an eye-pin with beads above the Shimmer Sheetz Circles piece. If you prefer shorter earrings omit the beads and use only earring wires.

MayChallenge-B

Instructions for the card:

  1. Back a piece of Shimmer Sheetz with Elizabeth Craft Designs Transparent Double Sided Sheet. Die cut one Circles piece from Shimmer Sheetz in your favorite color. (See Reminder in step 1 for earrings if you have not previously die cut Shimmer Sheetz.)
  2. Pull the release sheet from the back of the die cut Shimmer Sheetz to expose adhesive, place the Circles on another piece of Shimmer Sheetz in a coordinating color. Optional: Lightly sand the second piece of Shimmer Sheetz as shown to tone down some of the sparkle before adding the Circles piece.
  3. Add the Circles piece to a card front made with a mix of solid color and patterned cardstock. Incorporate a greeting (peel-off or die cut). Add dimensional embellishments, like Shimmer Sheetz or glittered flowers, a dragonfly, or whatever suits your taste and the occasion.

Calendar Flip Album

May 28, 2015
Hello, it’s Angela and I am sharing a project that was inspired by the flip album frame. My friend Nicole and I decided to create a calendar using the ECD tag dies and embellish the tags with ECD products. We had so much fun using the Alphabet, Shimmer Sheetz, various peel-offs and so many awesome dies! This project is a great way to be creative and make something you will use every day at home or work!
calendar
The frame is 9” tall and is perfect for your desk or tabletop. There are six tag pages with January through June on one side and when you flip the pages over, the backsides contain July through December.
EE
 The Tag Pages:
*Remember the tags are upside down, the decorative edge hangs at the bottom.
*Using Tags & More 1, 2 and 3 – cut out four of each style from desired paper (remember that the back of January is July so the tags must be the same style).
*All tags were cut to 5” long, each of the first six months were glued to the second six month of the year.
*Holes were punched at the top and eyelets were set.

Decorating the Tags:
*Place to mini calendar pages on each tag and decorate as desired.
*Here are photos for all twelve months:

I hope you have enjoyed the calendar project! This would make a wonderful gift and the calendar pages could be changed out each year. You could also make twelve pages instead of six and place photos on the back of the tags. The sky’s the limit on the many possibilities that you could create with the tag dies and the flip photo album frame.

Pop it Ups Wednesday with Shelly – Steampunk Accordion Tunnel Card

May 27, 2015

shelly hickox accordion steampunk card open view

Hi all! It’s Shelly Hickox with you today to share my first Wednesday With tutorial. I saw an accordion tunnel card last year and knew there had to be a way to make it with Karen Burniston’s Pop it Ups Accordion dies. Thankfully, Karen figured out that, with a few snips, her accordion dies could be reconfigured to create this fun and unique card style. I decided to use her Rectangle Accordion die, along with the gear dies from her Clock and Gears die set, and ECD Hinge dies plus Shimmer Sheetz to create a masculine, steampunk card suitable for Father’s Day or a manly birthday card.

Here’s how to make one of your own:

shelly hickox ww step 1Begin by cutting an 8.5” x 11” piece of kraft cardstock in half lengthwise. Fold each piece in half to create two top fold cards. Die cut the folded card, dropping the folded edge below the cutting edge of the die, so that the top fold remains intact. Repeat with the other piece of cardstock.

shelly hickox ww step 2

Next, snip the connection points and remove the inner panels from the cards.

shelly hickox ww step 3

Fold one card in half. Find the center and snip a small notch on the inside of the frame, top and bottom, cutting through both panels. Repeat with the other card, but cut the notches on the outer part of the frame.

shelly hickox ww step 4

With the panels open and facing each other, gently bend one panel of the card with the outer notches and insert it through the other panel, fitting the notches together. Repeat with the other side.

shelly hickox ww step 5

You’ve just made an accordion tunnel card! Now, let’s start decorating it! First, mark the left and right panels front panels so you know where they are for decorating. Disassemble card.

shelly hickox ww step 6

Adhere a sheet of Elizabeth Craft Designs Adhesive to a piece of silver Shimmer Sheetz. Cut the Shimmer Sheets into strips of various sizes and shapes. Adhere the pieces to the left and right panels of the card that you marked before disassembling, trimming off any excess. Sand lightly. Use an awl or piercing tool to punch faux rivets along the seams. To highlight the seams, cover the faux metal with black paint and wipe off, being sure to protect the uncovered cardstock.

shelly hickox ww step 7

While card is unassembled, stamp wood grain stamp using dark brown ink. Reassemble card.

shelly hickox ww step 8

Cut gears from gold and silver Shimmer Sheetz using Karen Burniston’s Gears dies. Cut hinges from adhesive-backed gold and silver Shimmer Sheetz using Elizabeth Craft Designs’ Hinges die. Sand and antique with black paint in the same method as step 6.

shelly hickox ww step 9

With card assembled, add hinges to edges as shown. Punch holes and add silver brads.

shelly hickox ww step 10

Finish card by adhering gears as desired to the front and back edges of each panel. Tip! Use punched waste from the larger gears to create faux brads for the smaller gears. Finally, stamp man figure and pointing finger, color and cut out, and adhere to card.

Shelly Hickox Wednesday With Card Top View

The great thing about this dimensional card is that it folds completely flat for mailing, but turns into a one-of-a-kind décor piece that the recipient will be able to display for months.

I hope you enjoyed my tutorial and are inspired to make one of your own!

Tiny Baby Peel-Off Sticker Canvases

May 26, 2015

Hi there! It’s Marsha here again!

Today I have a teeny tiny project to share with you!

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Tiny Baby Peel-Off Sticker Canvases

These mini canvases are 2.75″ x 2.75″ each and I created them by painting in the super cute new Baby peel-off stickers in black.

This is quite a simple project, but I have to be honest: you do need a steady hand and a bit of patience to finish all four of these.

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Tiny Baby Peel-Off Sticker Canvases

Here are the steps to create the tiny canvases:

1. Cut a circle out of post-it tape or a scrap of paper. I did this freehand, but if you want a perfect circle, you can die-cut one. Layer the circle on top of your mini canvas. It will function as a mask.

2. Apply paint around the mask with a cosmetic sponge. Then give the rest of the mini canvas one or two coats of paint. The result should be a coloured mini canvas with a white circle in the middle.

3. Add a Baby peel-off to the mini canvas.

4. Paint in the peel-off image. It’s easiest when you use a fine-tipped brush for this, like a no. 1 or maybe even a no. 0. You can also use the tip of a skewer to apply tiny dots of paint.

Don’t worry if you get paint on the black lines of the peel-off. If it’s just a speck of paint, you can let it dry and scrape it off with the tip of a skewer later on.

If it’s more than a speck you can use a paper towel to wipe it off right away or if that doesn’t do the trick: wrap a baby wipe around the tip of a skewer and use that to clean the excess paint off the peel-off.

And… if it goes all wrong, but you happen to have a spare of the same peel-off: you can let the paint dry and replace the paint covered peel-off with a new, clean one!

Here’s a short process video to give you an idea of the steps:

Marsha Valk | Elizabeth Craft Designs: Tiny Baby Peel-Off Sticker Canvases

These mini canvases are lightweight and small enough to fit in an envelope. They will make a darling little present for a newborn and they will look awfully cute in both a little baby boy’s and a baby girl’s room!

Flower Shop

May 25, 2015

Hi Friends!

It’s Debra Hensley for Susan’s Garden Design Team. Near where I live in Texas there is a small town made up of old country boutique shops. They specialize in handcrafted items and have lots of charm and personality. When you look down the streets, you see colorful awnings, flowers in pots and a variety of antique items. The CountryScapes dies inspired me to create a card that echos one of those shops.

Summer Fun!

May 24, 2015

ECDSummerFunwm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here today. Summer is on it’s way if you live in the northern part of the world! Down here in Australia, of course, we are approaching winter. Elizabeth Craft Designs has recently released some new peel-off stickers, one of which has a summer theme. I have used these today to create my card.

Here is how I created my card:

ECDSummerFun3wm

1. To create the card base –

a.  Cut white cardstock 5 -1/2″ x 11″. Score along the long side at 5-1/2″ so you have a top-folded card 5-1/2″ square.

b.  Cut blue cardstock 5-1/4″ square. Dab a small amount of Picket Fence Distress Paint onto a craft mat, pick up some of the ink using a blending tool and apply the paint to the top portion of the card to resemble clouds. Adhere card to white folded card.

c.  Cut kraft cardstock 5-1/4″ x 4-1/4″. Use the wavy edge die from the Beach Edges die set and line this up along the top of the card and die cut. Use a dot background stamp and kraft ink to randomly apply dots to the card. Ink around the edges of the card with the same ink. Layer this to the blue card so the bottom of the kraft card lines up with the bottom of the blue card.

d.  Cut blue cardstock 5-1/4″ x 2″ and another piece of blue cardstock 5-1/4″ x 1-1/2″. Use the waves border die from the Beach Edges die set and line this up along the top of these pieces of card and die cut. Dab a small amount of Picket Fence Distress Paint onto a craft mat, pick up some of the ink using a blending tool and apply the paint to the top portion of the waves. Adhere the taller blue card to the bottom of the kraft card and then attach the second set of waves to the card using foam tape. Set aside.

ECDSummerFun4wm

2. Creating the images on the front –

a.  Before reading the instructions below, you can see a video Els created using this technique here.

b.  Place a sheet of Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive onto cardstock that is big enough for your peel-offs and remove the release sheet.

c.  Be careful not to touch the adhesive or it will leave fingerprints in the glitter.

d.  From the Summer peel-offs, place the Ice Cream; Sun; Beach Ball; Shell; Thermometer; Sunglasses; Flip-Flops and Ice Block peel-offs  onto the release sheet (sticky side up).

e.  Place the cardstock that has Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive on top of the peel-off. (In other words, place sticky onto sticky.)

f.  Use release sheet in handling the cardstock until you cover the adhesive with glitter so you don’t leave fingerprints.

g.  Cover the adhesive with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter, polish glitter with your finger and brush excess off.

h.  Color your images as desired using alcohol-based markers on the glitter.

i.  Cut around all peel-off pieces and attach to the card. The Thermometer, Shell and bottom Flip-Flop are attached using adhesive, the other Flip-Flop and Sunglasses are attached to the card using foam tape. The Beach Ball is attached between the waves using adhesive.

* Coloring Tips for alcohol-based markers and glitter: Remember that when using alcohol-based markers, such as Copics, work quickly and don’t let the tip of the marker linger on the glittered surface. Too much alcohol ink can dissolve the adhesive and remove the glitter. It takes very little ink to color the surface of the glittered image so work with a light touch. To get the faded look, lay a line of color down along one edge of the section you want to color and then use your Blender pen to pull the color across the rest of the image. You may have to lay more color down to get deeper shading after you blend it out.

3.  Die cut “Hello” from the Hello die from bright pink cardstock that has Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive on the back of it. Adhere this to the upper right side of the card as shown in photo # 1 above.

ECDSummerFun2wm

The inside of the card:

4. Adhere the Ice Block peel-off to the lower right corner of the card and the Sun peel-off to the upper left corner of the card.

5. Using the Alphabet 1 – Caps die set, die cut “SUMMER FUN” from bright pink cardstock that has Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive on the back of it. Adhere the letters to the card so that they are positioned slightly to the left of the card.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you have enjoyed my tutorial.

Foxy meets Lucy

May 22, 2015

Hello my crafty friends! It’s Raquel Mason here today.  When I first saw the new peel-offs I couldn’t wait to create a card using them.  I found this mushroom pattern paper in my stash and thought it would be cute with Foxy.  Let me show you how easy it is to create this card.

ECD Foxy

ECD Foxy open

1.  Cut rust cardstock at 5.5″ x 8.5″ score at 4.25″ for a standard A2 base.

2.  Cut pattern paper at 5″ x 8″ and score at 4″. Lay cardstock flat, place Lucy Label die on the score line to the left side of card and die cut. Fold cardstock and place the top “Bump” portion of the die on the left side of card on the folded score line and die cut. See a video by Karen Burniston HERE and start at the 12:20 mark for the Lucy Label tutorial. See photo below for placement as well. Tip: by creating this extra “Bump” we now have a place for Foxy to sit.

ECD Foxy Lucy cut

3.  Die cut the following pieces

  • From yellow cardstock: all 3 decorator labels included in the Lucy Label set. For the largest decorator label, die cut the label first then place the 2 slot dies on both ends and die cut.
  • From black cardstock that has a Transparent Double-Sided Tape sheet applied already: die cut one Thank You.

ECD Foxy pieces

4. Adhere a sheet of Transparent Double-Sided Tape to white cardstock, remove release sheet, place desired peel-offs onto adhesive then cover with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter. Color with alcohol markers and cut out images using Fine Pointed Scissors. Click HERE to view a tutorial from Els about this technique.

ECD Foxy peel off

5.  Cut pattern paper at 3.5″ x 4.5″ and adhere to front of card base. Adhere Foxy and (2) paws to front of card. Place Branches with Leaves peel-off in the upper right corner. Use Borders peel-offs to create a frame. See top photo for placement.

6.  Adhere pattern paper pop up to card base, avoiding any adhesive in the pop up areas.

7. Use a Transfer Sheet to apply negative paw images to a decorator Lucy Label. Click HERE to view a tutorial from Els about using Transfer Sheets.

8.  Adhere “Thank You” to the slotted label. Place ribbon through the slots, fold excess ribbon around and adhere to back of pop up label. (See photo below). Adhere remaining Lucy Label decorator pieces, Foxy and desired peel-offs to card. (Scroll up and see 2nd photo for placement). Tip: to adhere Foxy, place adhesive on the bump, not Foxy.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and feel inspired to try it out yourself.

Happy Crafting,

Raquel

Pop It Ups Wednesday With Frances – Woof

May 20, 2015

KBWW-Woof1wm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances Byrne here today for Pop It Ups Wednesday. Today I am sharing a fun trifold card I created using the Lucy Label Pop Up Card die, Buster the Dog and the Barn Pop Stand Card die which I turned into a dog kennel.

Here is how I created my card:

KBWW-Woof3wm

1. Cut a piece of designer paper so it measures 5 inches x 12 inches. Score along the 12 inch side at 5 inches and 10 inches.

KBWW-Woof4wm

2. Position the pop up die from the Lucy Label Pop Up die set so that the centre lugs of the die are centred on the 5 inch score line. Run through die cutting machine.

KBWW-Woof5wm

Train the folds so that it will pop up.

KBWW-Woof6wm

3. Using white card, die cut the Lucy Label Pop Up die again, and trim off the label section only, adhere over the label on the designer paper panel.

Cut a piece of green card which measures 1 1/2 inches x 12 inches, score along the 12 inch edge at 5 inches and 10 inches as we did in step 1. Use the rolling hills die from the Outdoor Edges die set to create our grassy border which is adhered to the bottom of the card as per photo above.

KBWW-Woof2wm

4. Creating our Scene:

Dog Kennel –

  • Die cut the barn from designer paper.
  • Die cut the Barn roof from tan card and adhere to barn.
  • Use the large oval shape from the Oval Accordion Card set and die cut a brown oval, position the oval so half of the oval is adhered to the lower portion of the barn and trim off excess.
  • Die cut a bone from the Props 4 – Pets set and attach bone to kennel, refer to photo for placement.
  • Attach kennel to card using foam tape.

Bowl of Bones and Ball –

  • From the Props 4 – Pets die set die cut the bowl from red card, use a craft knife to create a slit in the bowl using line created by the die as a guide.
  • Die cut ball from orange card and adhere to the left side of the card.
  • Using Buster the Dog set, die cut 2 bones from kraft card and 3 from white card, insert into dog bowl and attach to right hand side flap.

Dogs – From the Buster the Dog set die cut the following:

  • (2) Solid Dog from black card
  • (2) Dogs from white card – use black or dark grey marker to color ears, bottom of feet, tail and spots on body. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to dog as per photo.
  • (1) Tongue from pink card (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to dog as per photo.
  • (2) Noses from black card (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to dog as per photo.
  • (2) sets of eyes from white card. (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to dog as per photo.
  • (1) Collar from blue card (attach turquoise glitter dots to collar). (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Attach to dog as per photo.

Attach one dog to the left hand side of card using foam tape. Trim the second dog, so you only have the head and attach this to the oval on the dog kennel using foam tape.

Branches –

  • Using the Leafy Branch die, die cut two branches from green card (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back before die cutting.)  Attach portions of the Leafy Branch to the card to resemble branches from a tree.

Woof –

  • Use the Alphabet 1 – Caps die set and die cut the letters “W O O F” from brown card (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back before die cutting.) Adhere letters to white label.

5. Cut a piece of blue card which measures 5 inches x 12 inches. Score along the 12 inch side at 5 inches and 10 inches. Attach the inner pop up card panel to the outer blue panel. Round corners of card.

6. Using the Happy Birthday stamp from the Farm Greetings Stamp set, mask the stamp using removable tape so you only ink the “Happy Birthday” portion of the stamp and stamp this onto white card. Karen Burniston has a photo tutorial of how do this this here.

Use the two larger labels from the Katie Label Pivot Card die set to create labels … die cut the smaller label from white card and the larger one from brown card.

Layer the labels together and attach the label so it is centred on the card and is adhere to the right hand flap only.

Place a small square of adhesive hook tape to the left side of the back of the label, attach the loop tape on top of the hook tape and close card, so the hook and loop tape keep card closed when needed.

7. Using the Props 4 – Pets die set, die cut 4 solid paw prints from tan card and 4 inner paw prints from brown card (Apply Transparent Double-Sided Adhesive to the back of all pieces before die cutting.) Assemble Paw Prints as per photo above and adhere to card.

Happy Birthday Explosion Box

May 18, 2015

Design Team-May-2015-5

Hi, this is Selma Stevenson to show you how I decorated a Birthday Explosion Box using three of Susan’s new flower dies. The recipient will not only receive long-lasting flowers, but also a gift card to make their birthday wishes come true! Susan’s new Garden Notes flowers are just the perfect size to decorate cards and boxes, and I am sure they will be treasured because they look so realistic.

Design Team May 2015 2

When closed, this is a six inch square explosion box.

Design Team May 2014 Front

*Creating the lid (shown above):

1. The top of the box must be just slightly larger than the box. Use 12″ x 12″ white cardstock. If using a score board, push the the cardstock over 1/16″ and score at 3″. Do this on all four sides. This will make the lid just slightly larger to fit over the bottom of the box. Add adhesive to the four corners to create the lid. See photo below.

2. Use Secret Garden Graphic 45 design paper to cover the top and sides of the box.

3. The Grid framing “Secret Garden” is die cut using Susan’s Garden Patch – 7/8-inch & Mini Leaves die set. Four squares are cut out of the center of the grid and centered over the words in the design paper. Add flat-back pearls at the intersections of the grid.

4. Die cut the Garden Notes – Hydrangea. Instructions for die-cutting, shaping and adhering the hydrangea is at the end of this post.

5. Use black Corner peel-offs, tulle and a ribbon to complete the top.

*To create the Explosion Box itself:

1. Use 12″ x 12″ cardstock and score at 3 inches on each side. See photo below.

2. Cut out the four corners and crease the seams well. See photo below. ECD-STCDT-May-2015-tut6*Inside panels (next 2 photos below):

1. For the flower on the bottom, use Garden Notes – Hydrangea. Cut white cardstock slightly smaller than the panel and emboss with Swirly Curves and adhere to the panel.

2. For the flower on the left side, use Garden Notes – Lilac. Cut white cardstock slightly smaller than the panel and emboss with Swirly Curves and adhere to the panel.

3. For the flower on the right side, use Garden Notes Hyacinthe. Cut white cardstock slightly smaller than the panel and emboss with Swirly Curves and adhere to the panel.

4. On the side of the box with the Happy Birthday PopUp, adhere purple cardstock to that panel of the box.

*The center, inside panel (next 2 photos below):

1. Cut a piece of 6″ x 6″ white cardstock and emboss 3/4 of that cardstock at the bottom with the Sea Glass embossing folder. Cut out the top of that white cardstock to fit around the popup panel on the top.

2. To create a pocket on the bottom for the tag, use the Paris Edges lacy die. Adhere on the bottom and each side with a small roll of Transparent Double-Sided Tape.

3. Die cut purple and white cardstock with the Tags & More 6 – Daisy die. Die cut the purple cardstock from the tag outline die and die cut the white cardstock with the decorator die in addition to the tag outline die. Create a pocket at the bottom to hold a gift card.

4. Adhere a sheet of Transparent Double-Sided Tape to a piece of white cardstock large enough for the black candles and gift peel-offs. Adhere the peel-offs onto the tape, sprinkle with Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter and color with Copic markers. See a video tutorial HERE. Both the candles and the gift are attached with dimensional tape.

*To create the dimensional “Happy Birthday” shown above and below:

1. Use the Happy Birthday PopUp dies. Click HERE to see a video tutorial.

2. Use 6″ x 9″ white cardstock for this die cut and score at 3″.

3. Place the die cut on the score line to create the popup.

4. The words “Happy Birthday” are die cut using black cardstock.

5. Die cut the stars using Transparent Double-Sided Tape attached to white cardstock. Then pour Silver Silk Microfine Glitter over the tape and polish with your finger. The silver stars are glued to the popup.

6. Glue a strip of the glittered cardstock behind the 6 stars on the bottom of the popup. Die cut the small stars on white cardstock and adhere the negative image white star strip on top of the glittered strip.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-6

*Finishing touches:

1.  Use letter stickers to adhere “a gift for you” sentiment by the gift.

2. Black border stickers are added around the Happy Birthday PopUp and along the bottom of the center panel.

3. Add black peel-off corners to inside panels as shown to match those on the lid.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut2

*Shaping the hydrangeas: Click HERE for a video tutorial.

1. Shape the base piece in the Garden Notes – Hydrangea die set using the largest ball stylus as shown above. By shaping this base piece, it will give the hydrangea the rounded (domed) shape.

2. Die cut the petals using four shades of light purple card stock and mix the colors on each flower as shown below.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut1

3. Using the smallest ball stylus, press down in the center of each petal to give it shape then press down in the very center to cup the petals as shown above. Note: Die cut many petals at a time and use extra for future projects.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-008

4. Glue the petals around the bottom of the domed base and then cover the entire base. Mix the shades of purple petals to give variation to the color of the flower. After the entire base is covered, add additional petals on top of the ones already attached which creates a nice full blossom.

ECD-STCDT-May-2015-Tut3

Here is a closeup of one of the finished Hydrangea. The finished flower is less than 2″ wide and about 1/2″ high. Aren’t they beautiful! Shape the lilacs and hyacinthe similiarly (without the dome) and adhere as shown.

Explosion boxes are always a lot of fun to receive. I hope you will give this a try and surprise someone you know!
