Elizabeth Craft Designs July Designer Challenge – Stand Up Helpers

July 31, 2014

Hello everyone,

Today is Challenge day! Every month we challenge our talented Design Team to create a project for a specific theme or using a specific ECD product. Some designers create more than one. This month we asked our designers to create a card using a Stand Up Helper die.
This could be a Stand Up Helpe word die or one of the Stand Up Helpers shaped motifs from Stand Up Helpers Sets 1 and 2.

Let’s see what our Design Team created!

The first project is from Raquel Mason who used the oak leaf Stand Up Helper from Stand Up Helpers Set 2. She used the Thinking of You Stand Up Helper die to cut the words for the bottom of the card. And she chose a beautiful oak leaf peel-off in gold. Love the way she captured autumn splendor!

Candy Spiegel used the Happy Birthday Stand Up Helper to create this masculine card.
She also used a Peel-Off Sticker and Silk Microfine Glitter to decorate it. Beautiful colors and coloring! Make sure to visit Candy’s blog for more ideas.

Jackie Smith knows how to combine beautiful papers. The first card she created is a Christmas card using the Season’s Greetings Stand Up Helper, the Five Part Pine and the Gifts Peel-Off. The two Silk Microfine Glitter colors she used for the pine tree look stunning. For the second card Jackie used the oak leaf Stand Up Helper, a Pumpkin Peel-Off and more Silk Microfine Glitter.

Love the way Frances Byrne used the Holiday House and Outdoor Edges by Karen Burniston for her card. It’s a great combination and using the row of trees in the background is such a clever idea. The colors are perfect. Frances used two Stand Up Helpers – the tree from Stand Up Helpers Set 2 and the Merry Christmas Stand Up Helper adhered as a flat element at the bottom.

Rita Edwards created this stunning fireplace Stand Up Helper card. She used the circle Stand Up Helper from Set 2 and the new Stockings and Holly Border dies. Rita also used the Season’s Greetings Stand Up Helper and some red Glitter Dot Peel-Offs to decorate the card and the Holly Borders.

Karen Aicken created a different style Stand Up Helper card using the flower Stand Up Helper included in Set 2. The Snowman die was used to decorate the card. Isn’t he cute?! If you would like to know how to create this card yourself, make sure to visit Karen’s blog.

Mary Prasad made this clean and simple Stand Up Helper card using the Merry Christmas Stand Up Helper. She also used the Five Part Pine and Holly Flourish to decorate the card. It is a very beautiful and elegant card. You can find more creations on Mary’s blog.

What a stunning card by Kelly Booth! Love the white and silver theme. Kelly used the Congratulations Stand Up Helper and the Clock from the Clock and Gears die set by Karen Burniston. You can fine more beautiful projects on Kelly’s blog.

Debra Hensley made this super cute card using the Thinking of You Stand Up Helper die. She also used the umbrella and rain boots from the Rainy Day die set. They both are the perfect match with the stamped bunny. Visit Debra’s blog for more info.

Helen Cryer used the Holiday House to decorate her Best Wishes Stand Up Helper card.
She cut a second Best Wishes in pink and adhered this over the Best Wishes cut into the light color card base to match the Agatha Edges at the bottom front. (Agatha Edges by Karen Burniston). Love the pastel colors.

The new word Stand Up Helpers can be used on flat cards to create a nice border. Here are some samples where the word Stand Up Helpers are used on flat cards.

Candy Spiegel made this beautiful card using the Best Wishes Stand Up Helper and the new Wheelbarrow die. To create the flowers Candy used Bunch of Flowers.

Love the colors on the next card made by Frances Byrne. Frances created a unique diagonal border using the Happy Birthday Stand Up Helper. She also used the new Crystal Flowers dies plus the Flourish with Flowers from our previous release.

Another clean and simple card by Mary Prasad using the Thinking of You Stand Up Helper. Love the layout of the card. Mary used Karen Burniston’s Agatha Edges at the bottom.

The next card is from Debra Hensley and it is so cute! Love the Congratulations Stand Up Helper used as a border – it looks really nice with the rest of the card. Debra also used the new Rubber Ducky.

I love the colors and the beautiful background on Kelly Booth Thinking of You Stand Up Helper card. It also features the new Wheelbarrow, filled with flowers and leaves made with dies already in the Elizabeth Craft Designs collection.

Kelly Booth send me this picture yesterday and I love it! Love the colors and the beautiful background. Kelly used the Thinking of You Stand Up Helper and the new Wheelbarrow.

Karen Aicken used the Merry Christmas Stand Up Helper and the new Stockings die. I really like the embossed background and the Marry Christmas as a border. For more info, visit Karen’s blog.

Kelly Booth also used the Stockings die for her card and created a beautiful embossed background. The Season’s Greetings Stand Up Helper was used to create the words.

Here is another card by Karen Aicken using the same dies as the Christmas card we showed earlier. Love the paper she chose. A quick and easy card to make but so elegant.

Rita Edwards created two cards. For the first card she used the Season’s Greetings Stand Up Helper, Ornament Set 3 and Holly Flourish dies. The Glitter Dot Peel-Off accents look beautiful. For the second card she used the Merry Christmas Stand Up Helper, the Stockings and Snowflakes dies. More info on Rita’s blog.

We hope you enjoyed all of the projects our talented team made for the Stand Up Helpers Challenge!

The next Elizabeth Craft Designs challenge is on August 31 and the next Karen Burniston Design Team Challenge is on August 20.

Raised Die Cut Crystal Flower Card

July 30, 2014

Last time I used an inlay die cut technique; this time I’m doing the opposite to create a beautiful raised background that almost looks embossed.

Raised Die Cut Card Front

Created by Mary Dimercurio Prasad for Elizabeth Craft Designs.

Making the Card

1. Cut pink card stock to 4 1/4 inches by 11 inches; fold in half to form card base. Cut several copies of the small crystal flower overlays (sets 1 and 2) out of the same pink card stock. Lay them out on the card front. Let the ones at the edges hang off as you arrange. Once you are satisfied, adhere them to the card. From the back side, cut off the parts that are hanging off by lining up your scissors with the edges of the card.

2. Die cut the large crystal flower overlay set 2 from the light pink card stock. Die cut the small crystal flower from Red Iris Shimmer Sheets. Die cut the small crystal flower overlay set 1 from pink card stock. Adhere this overlay (set 1) to the Red Iris crystal flower.

3. Adhere white card stock to double sided adhesive. Die cut small crystal flower overlay set 2. Peel off backing paper and sprinkle with Warm Diamonds Silk Microfine Glitter; polish with your finger. Die cut the round center from Pink Velvet Adhesive Sheet (optional), or use pink card stock. Adhere the layers together as shown – be sure to offset the layers from each other.

Raised Die Cut Card Close Up

4. Die cut “Hello” from pink card stock. Cut along the fold line to free it.

5. Cut a strip about 3/4 inch by 4 1/4 inches (width of card) from the white card stock with double sided adhesive. Peel off and cover with Warm Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter; polish with your finger.

6. Adhere white glittered strip to card as shown. Adhere “Hello” die cut as shown. Cut a thin strip about 1/8 inch by 4 1/4 inches from Red Iris Shimmer Sheetz. Adhere strip then flower as shown.

Pastel Challenge by Judi Kauffman

July 27, 2014

Judi Kauffman is back with another guest designer project. She gave herself an interesting challenge – using soft colors that are not what she usually chooses.

That’s right, Joset. I decided to limit myself to pastels, rarely the palette I pick. And instead of my favorite black outline peel-offs I used gold, another way to dial things down a notch.

Sticking to the parameters I set for myself wasn’t easy! I couldn’t resist sneaking in a sliver of Dark Pink Iris Shimmer Sheetz and some Pink/Silver Glitter Dots for one of the Flower Circle Happy Birthday cards. And even though I picked the lightest pens I own for the shades of purple and yellow, blue and green, I found myself adding an almost-bright bubblegum pink. The result is definitely offbeat, not at all what I tried to do! I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that if I like quirky combinations when I’m using exclusively bright colors the same would be true with pastels.

Instead of step-by-step instructions, I’m going to simply offer guidelines, my design strategies.
This way, ANY outline peel-offs can be used for the same kind of cards.

*Give yourself a challenge! Pick a palette of pens that is not your usual go-to assortment.
(If you usually use pastels, go for the bright end of the spectrum.)

*Put outline peel-offs onto smooth white cardstock or watercolor paper.

*Use the extras from your peel-off sheet(s) in unexpected ways. Example: The Flower Cuties “scenes” on my cards have little butterflies and flower clusters made from leftover pieces
(leaves that were intended for layering, thin lines from daffodil stems, water droplets).

*Experiment with the pens on a scrap of white cardstock or watercolor paper before working on your project. Give yourself some time to decide which pens look good together, trust your eye.

*Color inside the lines. Use flat colors the way I did, or do some blending. Another option: Go for Silk Microfine Glitter in Warm or Cool Diamond and color or blend on top of the sparkling surface. (See Els van de Burgt’s YouTube video for a tutorial on the glitter technique)

*Cut around the peel-offs as shown or as you prefer (close to the outline for the circles, leaving a rectangle for the “scenes”).

*Layer onto plain cardstock or a mix of plain cardstock and embossed and sanded Shimmer Sheetz. Use foam squares for dimension (as shown), or keep the cards flat. Allow the card sizes to vary or stick to standard sizes. Four of the six cards shown are standard A2 (4.25” x 5.5”). The Flower Cutie with watering can is 4.5” x 6.25”, the Flower Circle is 5” x 6”.

*Add gold peel-off greetings or die cut greetings in a coordinating color. (Tip: Velvet Adhesive Sheets work well for die cut greetings)

Hello Rubber Ducky

July 26, 2014

Hello Friends,

This is Rita here. For today’s post I have two words – baby & shower. As soon as I received the new dies, the Rubber Ducky and the Hello Stand Up Helper were my instant favorite. I had the idea to create baby shower invitations. Knowing that I would be creating several cards, I wanted to keep the design simple yet fun and unique.

This is how I created my cards:

1. To create the card base, cut white cardstock at 4 11/16″ wide x 9 3/8″ long, score at 2 5/16″ and at 4 11/16″ lengthwise. Whenever I create multiple cards, I mark my score marks on the board, which makes it easier to repeat the steps.

2. Die cut the Accordion Circle Card base from polka dot cardstock. Trim the extra fold piece that would otherwise connect one accordion panel to the next. Turn the die cut at 90 degree as shown.

DSCF3740_2

3. Adhere the polka dot cardstock onto the white card base, lining up the fold of the polka dot cardstock with the first score line of the white card base. Please make sure to leave the top half of the circle of the polka dot die cut unattached, as this area will serve as the “stand up” portion.

4. Using Velvet Adhesive Sheets, die cut each element of the Rubber Ducky die set.

DSCF3748_2

5. Assemble each rubber ducky and adhere onto the front of the polka dot cardstock.

DSCF3750_2

6. Using complimenting polka dot and patterned cardstock, cut cardstock at 4 11/16″ wide x 3″ high and adhere onto the inside of the white card base.

7. Center the Hello Stand Up Helper over the polka dot cardstock and secure with a small piece of craft tape, as shown. Also cut the stand up helper from Yellow Velvet Adhesive Sheet that will overlay the white die cut.

DSCF3756_2

8. Using the same white cardstock as the card base, cut cardstock at 4 3/16″ wide x 2 1/2″ high and adhere onto the inside of the card base, centered over the patterned cardstock.

9. Once the stand up helper is cut out, fold the front of the card and display the rubber ducky as a stand up card.

Christmas Candle Circle Spiral Pull Card

July 25, 2014

ECDCandleSpiralPull13-wm

Hi everyone,

It’s Frances here again! Did you know there are only 5 months or 153 days until Christmas! I hate doing the last minute rush of getting Christmas cards made so I like to start in July and get a few made each month. Then come December I have a stash of them ready to send out. So today I am sharing a Christmas card I created using the new Spiral Circle Pull Card, designed by Karen Burniston, and the Candle die which have both just been released this month.

Here’s how I created my card:

ECDCandleSpiralPull2a-wm

1. Cut a piece of red card so that it is 8 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches. Score the card along the 8 1/2 inch side at 4 1/4 inches. Place the Spiral Circle Pull Card die so that the centre lugs on the die line up on the centre score line of the card and slightly up towards the top of the card. Run this though your die cutting machine.

ECDCandleSpiralPull1-wm

2. Die cut the following pieces from the Candle die set: 1 candle base and 1 candle drip from white card that has Double Sided Adhesive applied to it. Add Cool Diamond Silk Microfine Glitter to these pieces after die cutting. 2 holly leaves and 2 pine branches from green card. Sponge green ink to holly leaves after die cutting. 1 poinsettia flower from red card, 1 large flame from Yellow Metallic Shimmer Sheetz, 1 medium flame and 1 flower center from Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz and 1 small flame from Orange Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz.

ECDCandleSpiralPull3-wm

3. Assemble candle as per photo above.

ECDCandleSpiralPull6-wm

4. Adhere candle to the left side of the card base using foam tape.

ECDCandleSpiralPull11-wm

5. Cut white circle using the largest circle accessory die from the Circle Spiral Pull Card set. Cut Merry Christmas from Red Velvet Adhesive and adhere to white circle. Adhere white circle to card base using foam tape.

ECDCandleSpiralPull4a-wm

6. Place spiral die inside the circle die (both from the Circle Spiral Pull Card set) and die cut spiral from red card.

ECDCandleSpiralPull4b-wm

7. Apply some glue around the outer edge of the spiral piece and adhere to the inside of the card as per photo above. Next apply glue to the center of the spiral, then close the card and apply pressure for a few seconds. Let glue dry.

ECDCandleSpiralPull12-wm

8. Die cut 10 poinsettia flowers from red card, 10 holly leaves from green card, 6 pine branches from green card (sponge edges with green ink after die cutting) and 10 flower centers from Yellow Metallic Shimmer Sheetz.

9. Adhere flower centers to each poinsettia. Adhere holly leaves and pine branches behind each poinsettia. Adhere an extra leaf and branch behind one (the one for the candle on the left). Adhere flowers to the card and along the spiral as shown. Adhere 4 single flowers to the back of the ones that are adhered to the spiral. (Note: you may need to have the holly leaves on the 4 flowers which are backing the flowers on the spiral in reverse so that they match the holly leaves that can been seen on the front of the spiral).

ECDCandleSpiralPull2-wm

10. Die cut tag from from white card and stamp sentiment onto this using black ink. Adhere tag to the center of the spiral so the hole on the tag is under the flower as per photo above.

11. Add striped patterned paper (1 3/8 inch wide) to the right hand edge of the card.

12. Add green candy dots to each of the closures.

Thanks for stopping by today.

Thank You Flowers

July 24, 2014

ECD flower by Candy Spiegel

Hi! It’s Candy here and i’m back to show you a floral Thank You card. For this card I used the circle Stand-Up Helper from Stand-Up Helpers Set 2. I also used a flower Peel-Off that I thought would match perfect with the floral paper that I just purchased.

Instructions:

1. Cut paper 4 1/4″x11″. Score at 2 3/4″, 5 1/2″ and 8 1/4″.

2. Use washi tape to hold round Stand-Up Helper die in place at the 2 3/4″ mark and cut.

photo 1 (2)

3. Cut white cardstock and Double-Sided Adhesive slightly larger than the flower Peel-Off. Remove backing off Double-Sided Adhesive and adhere to cardstock.

4. Remove other side of the adhesive and place it upside down on the table. Remove sticker and place it upside down on backing. Place adhesive/cardstock, sticky side down, on top of sticker. Flip over and remove cover.

5. Coat with Soft Teal Silk Microfine Glitter. Shake off excess and polish. (a coffee filter catches leftover glitter so it can be dumped back into the jar.)

6. Cut out sticker.

7. Repeat with small flower.

photo 2 (2)

8. Use tweezers to apply Glitter Dots and Glitter Flowers as shown.

9. Cut patterned paper 4″ x 5 1/4″ and adhere to top quarter of card base.

10. Attach large flower with dimensional adhesive.

11. Cut leaves from patterned paper. Adhere.

12. Cut patterned paper 4″ x 2 1/2″ and adhere below Stand Up Helper.

13. Cut patterned paper 1 1/2″ x 1 1/4″. Mat with another piece of patterned paper. Adhere to card.

14. Cut sentiment from patterned paper and adhere to card.

15. Adhere small flower to inside of card.

16. Apply Glitter Flowers as shown.

Spooky Candle Card

July 23, 2014

Howdy!

Debra here today with something a little different.  We’ve had a lot of  Christmas in July ideas so how about Halloween in July!! I absolutely love the Candle die and while working on a Christmas card my son suggested the candle would make a great Halloween candle too. I loved the idea! Today’s card uses the same sketch I used in a Christmas version of the card. If you have a great sketch to start with you can alter it to almost any occasion by simply changing the color scheme and papers.

ECD July 23 blogpost finished 2a P1060780

Instructions:

1. Fold a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 piece of white cardstock in half to form a standard A2 size card. Cut a piece of pattern paper to 4 x 5 1/4 and die cut the largest oval from the Accordion Oval Card die in the center of the paper. Cut a piece of green cardstock to 3 3/4 x 5 and adhere to the center of the card base.

2. Die cut a candle from Black Shimmer Sheetz, the candle drips and flames from white cardstock covered with double sided adhesive, the pine branches from black cardstock, and green poinsettias from the Candle die set. Die cut orange and purple holly leaves from the Holly die.

3. Peel the liner off the candle drip and flame die cuts. Glitter the drip and middle flame with Orange Silk Microfine Glitter. Polish with your finger to set the glitter in the adhesive and bring up the shine. Repeat the same process with Warm Silk Microfine Glitter on the small and large flame.

ECD July 23 blog Hcandle diecuts 1a P1060750

4. Using black ink, ink the edges of the pattern piece, holly leaves, poinsettias. Ink a little heavier on the top of the oval to suggest the soot from the burning candle. Assemble the candle by adhering the glittered drips to the top of the candle. Color the large flame with Copic V17 and the small flame with Y17. Adhere them together. Add black Glitter Dots to the centers of the flowers.

ECD July 23 blogpost Hcandle inked 1a P1060755

5. Adhere the pattern oval frame to the center of the card over the green cardstock using pop dots or foam adhesive. Add candle and flames on pop dots to the center of the oval. Arrange and adhere the holly leaves, alternating colors, along the bottom of the oval.

ECD July 23 blogpost Hcandle placement 1a P1060758

6. Die cut only the word Greetings from the Season’s Greeting die in white cardstock. Adhere curved as shown. Add a little “soot” black ink to the bottom of Greetings. Add the flowers on pop dots and the black pine branches. Add Glitter Dots to the top branches to complete.

Happy Halloween!

Here are both cards side by side so you can compare. Which do you like best?

Crystal Flowers

July 21, 2014

Hello my crafty friends, it’s Raquel here today. When I first saw Elizabeth Craft Designs’ new die set called Crystal Flowers set 1, I couldn’t wait to create a card showcasing how beautiful they are.
I used several 2014 Summer Release dies for this card, including the Circle Spiral Pull Card for the base. Let me show you how I made this card, simply change the colors and sentiment to suit your needs.

ECD CSP Crystal Flower holiday angle 2

1.  Cut pattern paper at 5 x 8 and score at 4 to form a finished base card of 5 x 5.

2.  Line the Circle Spiral Pull Card alignment nubs on the score line and die cut. Cut a spiral (included in Circle Spiral Pull Card) from the same pattern paper.

ECD CSP Crystal Flower holiday pieces 1

3.  Die cut 1 of each size solid shaped Crystal Flowers from Yellow Metallic Shimmer Sheetz.
Die cut 1 one of each size overlay from paper that has Double Sided Adhesive on it. From green paper die cut 2 Holly Borders as shown in the picture below.

4.  Remove release sheet from the 2 Crystal Flower overlays and 2 flower centers, cover with True Red Silk Microfine Glitter, shake off excess and polish with your finger. Adhere overlay to Crystal Flower solid shapes and adhere flower centers.

ECD CSP Crystal Flower Holiday pieces 2

5.  Using Candle die, cut 3 pine springs, 2 triple berries, 1 single berry and 1 poinsettia (including circle) on paper that has Double Sided Adhesive on it. Cut 2 holly leaves from green paper.
See picture below.

6.  Remove release sheet from all pieces cut in step 5 and cover with True Red Silk Microfine Glitter, shake off excess and polish with your finger.

ECD CSP Crystal Flower holiday pieces 3

7.  Using Holiday House, die cut 1 green small decorator door (I used this as a tag). Place Merry Christmas Peel-Off Sticker and star on tag.

ECD CSP Crystal Flower holiday open

8.  Adhere Spiral end only to the circle area using liquid glue or a glue dot. To glue the other end, place a glue dot or liquid glue at the end of the spiral and close card to adhere, this will ensure perfect placement.

9.  Use Glitter Dots for the berries on both of the Holly Borders. Cut one of the Holly Border die cuts into small pieces and adhere to several places on the spiral as shown. Adhere poinsettia and tag to spiral as shown.

10.  Adhere Holly Border to the left side of card.

11. Adhere largest Crystal Flower and 2 pine sprigs to front circle. Adhere smaller Crystal Flower and 1 pine sprig to top right corner of card.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and feel inspired to try it out for yourself.

Snowman Katie Label Accordion Card

July 20, 2014

Hi everyone! Helen here with a Christmas Accordion card today. I know we have been seeing a lot of  ‘Christmas in July’ lately, but it’s hard to resist with all of Elizabeth Craft Designs’ wonderful new die releases! Starting your Christmas cards now is actually a pretty good idea. I always end up getting to the middle of December, with a grand total of about three cards made and a mad panic to make more!

DSC_0366 (1280x1175)

Directions:

1. Cut out two plain white Katie Label Accordion panels and eight border pieces from blue glitter card using the Katie Stars Frame Edges. Keep four of the tiny blue stars which are left over from cutting the borders.

2. Use the Katie Label Accordion die to cut blue patterned paper center pieces. Cut off the excess tabs by hand.

3. Cut out the various parts of the snowman as shown below including two snow drifts, a ‘Merry Christmas’, a large star and two snowflakes from the Spiral Circle Pull Card set. (Please note that the small black gems shown in the picture below didn’t end up being used!)
