Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge – Spring & Easter!

March 12, 2014

Hi, it’s Karen Burniston with the March Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. Each month I challenge my Designer Challenge team to use Pop it Ups dies for a specific theme. This month the theme is Spring or Easter cards. You’ll find eighteen inspiring projects below from the DC team plus one guest designer.

The Karen Burniston Designer Challenge Team is a group of eleven designers who were already participating in my challenges for a previous company. When I made the leap to Elizabeth Craft Designs I was thrilled that the team came with me and we were able to pick right back up again with monthly challenges.

Recently, an Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team was formed and five of those designers are participating in both teams. The KBDC team focuses primarily on Karen Burniston dies for the monthly challenges, mixing in whatever other products they like, including (and encouraging) other ECD products. The Elizabeth Craft Designs Design Team promotes ALL ECD products and will post many types of inspiring projects, not just Pop it Ups cards. Hopefully this will clear up any confusion about the teams.

OK back to the Spring/Easter challenge. For my project I decided to combine the Garden Bench with the Lots of Pops die to give me additional platforms for creating my Easter scene. Then I started mixing in decorator pieces from many other Pop it Ups dies, like the All Seasons Tree, Butterfly Accessory, Katie Label Pivot Card, Oval Accordion and Fancy Frame Edges.

The video tutorial will show you how to extend the length of the Fancy Frame Edges to make a frame to fit a 6×6 card:

The video will also show how to use the Garden Bench and the Lots of Pops dies together, plus how to get the black/white texture on the Poles.

The butterfly is suspended on a wire attached to one of the “pops” of the Lots of Pops die:

DC Team

Time to see how the Designer Challenge team interpreted the Spring/Easter challenge. I will share one photo of each project, but know that the designers have full blog posts on their blogs (linked with their names) for these projects, including supply lists, instructions and additional photos. I encourage lots of clicking to fully experience the beauty.

Let’s start with six more Garden Bench projects.

Fran Sabad found the perfect girlfriends Art Impressions stamp to sit on the bench. She did some clever work with support boxes to hold the ladies in place just perfectly. I really want to know what’s so engrossing to these best friends – could it be talk of their favorite Pop it Ups cards?

G_Fran_MarchDC_Bench

Summer Hills-Painter, who just had baby boy #3 a couple of weeks ago, created this absolutely lovely walk in the park. I love the meandering path and the fish pond!

G_Summer_MarchDC_Bench

Sandy Diller joins us again this month as a guest designer. For this card she used the Garden Bench Floating Floor template to add a floating floor to animate her dog stamp and grass. I like the use of the All Seasons Tree with the foliage clouds glued over the branches instead of behind. Great idea!
G_Sandy_MarchDC_BenchKaren Aicken used photo-realistic stickers to add animals into her Garden Bench card that really make it look like a scene from nature. I love the doubled and staggered All Seasons Tree grouping in the background and the wooden bench.

G_Karen_A_MarchDC_Bench

Frances Byrne made this adorable Garden Bench card featuring some very cute rubber stamps. I love the Easter eggs in the All Seasons Tree! Frances also used the Garden Bench Floating Floor template to be able to animate her sign and grass.
G_Frances_MarchDC_Bench2

Frances Byrne made another Garden Bench card for the challenge, swapping out the stamps and the styling of the tree for a completely different, but equally adorable, card.

G_Frances_MarchDC_Bench

Next let’s look at some Spring and Easter creations using Pivot Card dies.

Gretchen Schmidt created this simple elegant Butterfly Pivot Card with soft vellum layers and Agatha Edges. I especially like how she outlined the butterfly shape with a fine black pen. Neat touch!

P_Gretchen_MarchDC_Butterfly1

Helen Cryer used the Katie Label Pivot Card along with a variety of other ECD dies to make this stunning white-on-white Easter card. She used her impressive calligraphy skills for the greeting and offers tips on how to glitter it.

Let’s look at some traditional pop-up cards next, using the Lots of Pops and Lucy Label dies:

Donna Wright has an impressive card using the Lots of Pops die where she left most of the “pops” in the collapsed position and used just one platform to animate her stamped girl. Her styling of the umbrella and impressive shadow photography are fantastic!

G_Donna_MarchDC_Lotsa2

Donna Wright also made this impressive Lots of Pops card, this time using all the “pops” on the die, to animate her wild daffodils. She created the flowers quite cleverly from star and flower dies!

G_Donna_MarchDC_Lotsa

Shelly Hickox used the Lucy Label Pop it Ups die for this soft vintage Easter card. The front of the card is equally impressive so you’ll definitely want to check it out. Love how she used the extra stair step platform at the top of the Lucy Label to animate her stamped chick.

G_Shelly_MarchDC_Lucy

Karen Aicken illustrated perfectly with this next card that you can slide the Pop it Ups dies anywhere along the fold of the card. Here she’s shifted the Lots of Pops dies to the left side to leave room for the bamboo trellis die on the right. Such fabulous details in this card.

G_Karen_A_MarchDC_Lotsa

Caz Counsell has an absolutely beautiful and clever Lots of Pops card where she styled the ECD Birdie die to look like a chick and used oval dies from the Oval Accordion set to resemble eggs and a basket. She also incorporated the Butterfly Accessory dies an the Agatha Edges.

G_Caz_MarchDC_Lotsa

The All Seasons Tree die can also be used for card fronts, as Helen Cryer shows here with this beautiful vision of a pink Spring tree. I gasped when I saw it.

SONY DSC

Finally, let’s look at some Spring and Easter ideas using the Accordion Album dies.

Guest designer Sandy Diller made this birds of Spring 4-panel Fancy Accordion Album, which also uses the Fancy Frame Edges. Love all her different colors and birds and the clever use of the Agatha Edge on the front of the album.

A_Sandy_MarchDC_Fancy

Raquel Mason also used the Fancy Accordion Album and Fancy Frame Edges for a 3-panel Easter card using both the positive and negative portions of the Peel-off stickers. This is a great technique and you’ll find more information and a link to Els’ video on the transfer sheet technique by visiting Raquel’s blog.

A_Raquel_MarchDC_Fancy

Summer Hills-Painter made this next card – a delightful 3-panel Oval Accordion card with a pieced bunny and peek-a-boo windows. She used accessory pieces from four other Pop it Ups dies on this card, illustrating how well the dies can work with each other.

A_Summer_MarchDC_Oval

And finally, check out this amazing 4-panel Oval Accordion Easter card by Kelly Booth. She’s used the Oval Flourish Frame Edges and glittered colored egg Peel-offs, suspended by threads in the openings. This is a beautiful project.
A_Kelly_MarchDC_Oval

Well I hope you are as inspired as I am to make some pop-up and interactive Spring and Easter cards using Pop it Ups dies.

Thank you to the amazing team and to our guest designer for posting incredible creations. Join us on April 16, 2014, for the next Karen Burniston Pop it Ups Designer Challenge. The theme will be Mamas & Babies – the designers can choose to make a baby card or a Mother’s Day card. (I’m sure a bunch of them will choose both!)

Karen: I very much enjoy your video tutorials but not the written ones. I get on the wrong lines when reading off the computer and it gives me a headache. So my request is to make them all video tutorials and have the written copy available to print out. I have seen some beautiful panels for your new dies and would like to watch the video’s a couple of times before I buy one of the accordion dies. They look interesting, but reading the directions doesn’t do it for me, sorry. once I see it a couple times then the written directions would be helpful.

Gorgeous cards, loads of inspiration….oh, the possibilities are endless! My sister Kyna is over the moon when I make cards like this for her or her family; I especially like to surprise my older relatives with a special card, even for just a great day. Thank you for all you do to equip us with the Tools of Awesomeness; I rocked the 15th birthday card for a young lady last week, using the park bench. As friends and family see cards, they want to be on my list, too. Keep up the great work!

It is impossible to choose only one person who would enjoy receiving one of the pop up cards. Many members of my family and my friends love to get these cards. I, too, love them and love to make them. All of the cards that you show are so pretty and clever and just make me want to make more and more of them. I love the garden bench and so will have to add that one to the extremely long list of the dies that I want or I should say NEED. Your imagination is endless.

I have a dear friend that will be 96 this year and has a lovely backyard with garden benches. I would love to make her one of these lovely pop-up garden bench cards. She is a former teacher and would love to receive one.

I sure wish I could make cards like these. My friend Sammye sure would love one. I try but they just aren’t like the ones your design team make.

Wow! I just signed up for your newsletter Karen. Just when I thought I had signed up for everything Karen Burniston there is a newsletter full of all kinds of inspiration! I cannot wait to get my hands on the pop it ups Garden Bench and All seasons Tree. My mother decorates for all the seasons or holidays and would just get a kick out of a card made with these dies. She loves all the cards I make and says “You are so crafty. I just love your cards”. Every time! LOL! Gotta have them and going to make her one soon!

Ohhhh Emmmmmm Geeeeee! This has got to be my “most favourite” release of all of ’em! I love doing pop up/pop it up cards. Just love it and everyone I make one for is just thrilled. My parents especially. My Dad is just so over-the-top with his compliments on my cards and so a favourite to make special pop up cards for. He keeps everyone. My husband too loves my cards and especially the pop up ones. He’s got quite a collection in his office and he’s not shy about telling everyone about them. Thanks Karen and ELS for creating these special dies for us to enjoy!

Thanks for sharing all the possibilities with the garden bench and the other pop-it-ups! You are so clever and always teaching us how to get the most out of our purchases! Thanks, too, for showing me how to fold these complicated pop-it-ups! I needed that!
